Nehemiah 5

And there was a great cry of the people and of their wives against their brethren the Jews.

کچھ دیر بعد کچھ مرد و خواتین میرے پاس آ کر اپنے یہودی بھائیوں کی شکایت کرنے لگے۔

For there were that said, We, our sons, and our daughters, are many: therefore we take up corn for them, that we may eat, and live.

بعض نے کہا، ”ہمارے بہت زیادہ بیٹے بیٹیاں ہیں، اِس لئے ہمیں مزید اناج ملنا چاہئے، ورنہ ہم زندہ نہیں رہیں گے۔“

Some also there were that said, We have mortgaged our lands, vineyards, and houses, that we might buy corn, because of the dearth.

دوسروں نے شکایت کی، ”کال کے دوران ہمیں اپنے کھیتوں، انگور کے باغوں اور گھروں کو گروی رکھنا پڑا تاکہ اناج مل جائے۔“

There were also that said, We have borrowed money for the king's tribute, and that upon our lands and vineyards.

کچھ اَور بولے، ”ہمیں اپنے کھیتوں اور انگور کے باغوں پر بادشاہ کا ٹیکس ادا کرنے کے لئے اُدھار لینا پڑا۔

Yet now our flesh is as the flesh of our brethren, our children as their children: and, lo, we bring into bondage our sons and our daughters to be servants, and some of our daughters are brought unto bondage already: neither is it in our power to redeem them; for other men have our lands and vineyards.

ہم بھی دوسروں کی طرح یہودی قوم کے ہیں، اور ہمارے بچے اُن سے کم حیثیت نہیں رکھتے۔ توبھی ہمیں اپنے بچوں کو غلامی میں بیچنا پڑتا ہے تاکہ گزارہ ہو سکے۔ ہماری کچھ بیٹیاں لونڈیاں بن چکی ہیں۔ لیکن ہم خود بےبس ہیں، کیونکہ ہمارے کھیت اور انگور کے باغ دوسروں کے قبضے میں ہیں۔“

And I was very angry when I heard their cry and these words.

اُن کا واویلا اور شکایتیں سن کر مجھے بڑا غصہ آیا۔

Then I consulted with myself, and I rebuked the nobles, and the rulers, and said unto them, Ye exact usury, every one of his brother. And I set a great assembly against them.

بہت سوچ بچار کے بعد مَیں نے شرفا اور افسروں پر الزام لگایا، ”آپ اپنے ہم وطن بھائیوں سے غیرمناسب سود لے رہے ہیں!“ مَیں نے اُن سے نپٹنے کے لئے ایک بڑی جماعت اکٹھی کر کے

And I said unto them, We after our ability have redeemed our brethren the Jews, which were sold unto the heathen; and will ye even sell your brethren? or shall they be sold unto us? Then held they their peace, and found nothing to answer.

کہا، ”ہمارے کئی ہم وطن بھائیوں کو غیریہودیوں کو بیچا گیا تھا۔ جہاں تک ممکن تھا ہم نے اُنہیں واپس خرید کر آزاد کرنے کی کوشش کی۔ اور اب آپ خود اپنے ہم وطن بھائیوں کو بیچ رہے ہیں۔ کیا ہم اب اُنہیں دوبارہ واپس خریدیں؟“ وہ خاموش رہے اور کوئی جواب نہ دے سکے۔

Also I said, It is not good that ye do: ought ye not to walk in the fear of our God because of the reproach of the heathen our enemies?

مَیں نے بات جاری رکھی، ”آپ کا یہ سلوک ٹھیک نہیں۔ آپ کو ہمارے خدا کا خوف مان کر زندگی گزارنا چاہئے تاکہ ہم اپنے غیریہودی دشمنوں کی لعن طعن کا نشانہ نہ بنیں۔

I likewise, and my brethren, and my servants, might exact of them money and corn: I pray you, let us leave off this usury.

مَیں، میرے بھائیوں اور ملازموں نے بھی دوسروں کو اُدھار کے طور پر پیسے اور اناج دیا ہے۔ لیکن آئیں، ہم اُن سے سود نہ لیں!

Restore, I pray you, to them, even this day, their lands, their vineyards, their oliveyards, and their houses, also the hundredth part of the money, and of the corn, the wine, and the oil, that ye exact of them.

آج ہی اپنے قرض داروں کو اُن کے کھیت، گھر اور انگور اور زیتون کے باغ واپس کر دیں۔ جتنا سود آپ نے لگایا تھا اُسے بھی واپس کر دیں، خواہ اُسے پیسوں، اناج، تازہ مَے یا زیتون کے تیل کی صورت میں ادا کرنا تھا۔“

Then said they, We will restore them, and will require nothing of them; so will we do as thou sayest. Then I called the priests, and took an oath of them, that they should do according to this promise.

اُنہوں نے جواب دیا، ”ہم اُسے واپس کر دیں گے اور آئندہ اُن سے کچھ نہیں مانگیں گے۔ جو کچھ آپ نے کہا وہ ہم کریں گے۔“ تب مَیں نے اماموں کو اپنے پاس بُلایا تاکہ شرفا اور بزرگ اُن کی موجودگی میں قَسم کھائیں کہ ہم ایسا ہی کریں گے۔

Also I shook my lap, and said, So God shake out every man from his house, and from his labour, that performeth not this promise, even thus be he shaken out, and emptied. And all the congregation said, Amen, and praised the LORD. And the people did according to this promise.

پھر مَیں نے اپنے لباس کی تہیں جھاڑ جھاڑ کر کہا، ”جو بھی اپنی قَسم توڑے اُسے اللہ اِسی طرح جھاڑ کر اُس کے گھر اور ملکیت سے محروم کر دے!“ تمام جمع شدہ لوگ بولے، ”آمین، ایسا ہی ہو!“ اور رب کی تعریف کرنے لگے۔ سب نے اپنے وعدے پورے کئے۔

Moreover from the time that I was appointed to be their governor in the land of Judah, from the twentieth year even unto the two and thirtieth year of Artaxerxes the king, that is, twelve years, I and my brethren have not eaten the bread of the governor.

مَیں کُل بارہ سال صوبہ یہوداہ کا گورنر رہا یعنی ارتخشستا بادشاہ کی حکومت کے 20ویں سال سے اُس کے 32ویں سال تک۔ اِس پورے عرصے میں نہ مَیں نے اور نہ میرے بھائیوں نے وہ آمدنی لی جو ہمارے لئے مقرر کی گئی تھی۔

But the former governors that had been before me were chargeable unto the people, and had taken of them bread and wine, beside forty shekels of silver; yea, even their servants bare rule over the people: but so did not I, because of the fear of God.

اصل میں ماضی کے گورنروں نے قوم پر بڑا بوجھ ڈال دیا تھا۔ اُنہوں نے رعایا سے نہ صرف روٹی اور مَے بلکہ فی دن چاندی کے 40 سِکے بھی لئے تھے۔ اُن کے افسروں نے بھی عام لوگوں سے غلط فائدہ اُٹھایا تھا۔ لیکن چونکہ مَیں اللہ کا خوف مانتا تھا، اِس لئے مَیں نے اُن سے ایسا سلوک نہ کیا۔

Yea, also I continued in the work of this wall, neither bought we any land: and all my servants were gathered thither unto the work.

میری پوری طاقت فصیل کی تکمیل میں صَرف ہوئی، اور میرے تمام ملازم بھی اِس کام میں شریک رہے۔ ہم میں سے کسی نے بھی زمین نہ خریدی۔

Moreover there were at my table an hundred and fifty of the Jews and rulers, beside those that came unto us from among the heathen that are about us.

مَیں نے کچھ نہ مانگا حالانکہ مجھے روزانہ یہوداہ کے 150 افسروں کی مہمان نوازی کرنی پڑتی تھی۔ اُن میں وہ تمام مہمان شامل نہیں ہیں جو گاہے بگاہے پڑوسی ممالک سے آتے رہے۔

Now that which was prepared for me daily was one ox and six choice sheep; also fowls were prepared for me, and once in ten days store of all sorts of wine: yet for all this required not I the bread of the governor, because the bondage was heavy upon this people.

روزانہ ایک بَیل، چھ بہترین بھیڑبکریاں اور بہت سے پرندے میرے لئے ذبح کر کے تیار کئے جاتے، اور دس دس دن کے بعد ہمیں کئی قسم کی بہت سی مَے خریدنی پڑتی تھی۔ اِن اخراجات کے باوجود مَیں نے گورنر کے لئے مقررہ وظیفہ نہ مانگا، کیونکہ قوم پر بوجھ ویسے بھی بہت زیادہ تھا۔

Think upon me, my God, for good, according to all that I have done for this people.

اے میرے خدا، جو کچھ مَیں نے اِس قوم کے لئے کیا ہے اُس کے باعث مجھ پر مہربانی کر۔
