James 3

My brethren, be not many masters, knowing that we shall receive the greater condemnation.

Не багато-хто ставайте, брати мої, учителями, знавши, що більший осуд приймемо.

For in many things we offend all. If any man offend not in word, the same is a perfect man, and able also to bridle the whole body.

Бо багато ми всі помиляємось. Коли хто не помиляється в слові, то це муж досконалий, спроможний приборкувати й усе тіло.

Behold, we put bits in the horses' mouths, that they may obey us; and we turn about their whole body.

От і коням вкладаєм уздечки до рота, щоб корилися нам, і ми всім їхнім тілом керуємо.

Behold also the ships, which though they be so great, and are driven of fierce winds, yet are they turned about with a very small helm, whithersoever the governor listeth.

От і кораблі, хоч які величезні та гнані вітрами жорстокими, проте найменшим стерном скеровуються, куди хоче стерничий.

Even so the tongue is a little member, and boasteth great things. Behold, how great a matter a little fire kindleth!

Так само й язик, малий член, але хвалиться вельми! Ось маленький огонь, а запалює величезного ліса!

And the tongue is a fire, a world of iniquity: so is the tongue among our members, that it defileth the whole body, and setteth on fire the course of nature; and it is set on fire of hell.

І язик то огонь. Як світ неправости, поставлений так поміж нашими членами, язик сквернить усе тіло, запалює круг життя, і сам запалюється від геєнни.

For every kind of beasts, and of birds, and of serpents, and of things in the sea, is tamed, and hath been tamed of mankind:

Бо всяка природа звірів і пташок, гадів і морських потвор приборкується, і приборкана буде природою людською,

But the tongue can no man tame; it is an unruly evil, full of deadly poison.

та не може ніхто із людей язика вгамувати, він зло безупинне, він повний отрути смертельної!

Therewith bless we God, even the Father; and therewith curse we men, which are made after the similitude of God.

Ним ми благословляємо Бога й Отця, і ним проклинаєм людей, що створені на Божу подобу.

Out of the same mouth proceedeth blessing and cursing. My brethren, these things ought not so to be.

Із тих самих уст виходить благословення й прокляття. Не повинно, брати мої, щоб так це було!

Doth a fountain send forth at the same place sweet water and bitter?

Хіба з одного отвору виходить вода солодка й гірка?

Can the fig tree, my brethren, bear olive berries? either a vine, figs? so can no fountain both yield salt water and fresh.

Хіба може, брати мої, фіґове дерево родити оливки, або виноград фіґи? Солодка вода не тече з солонця.

Who is a wise man and endued with knowledge among you? let him shew out of a good conversation his works with meekness of wisdom.

Хто мудрий і розумний між вами? Нехай він покаже діла свої в лагідній мудрості добрим поводженням!

But if ye have bitter envying and strife in your hearts, glory not, and lie not against the truth.

Коли ж гірку заздрість та сварку ви маєте в серці своєму, то не величайтесь та не говоріть неправди на правду,

This wisdom descendeth not from above, but is earthly, sensual, devilish.

це не мудрість, що ніби зверху походить вона, але земна, тілесна та демонська.

For where envying and strife is, there is confusion and every evil work.

Бо де заздрість та сварка, там безлад та всяка зла річ!

But the wisdom that is from above is first pure, then peaceable, gentle, and easy to be intreated, full of mercy and good fruits, without partiality, and without hypocrisy.

А мудрість, що зверху вона, насамперед чиста, а потім спокійна, лагідна, покірлива, повна милосердя та добрих плодів, безстороння та нелукава.

And the fruit of righteousness is sown in peace of them that make peace.

А плід правди сіється творцями миру.
