Nahum 3

Woe to the bloody city! it is all full of lies and robbery; the prey departeth not;

واى بر تو اى شهر خونریز که پُر از دروغ و قتل و غارت هستى!

The noise of a whip, and the noise of the rattling of the wheels, and of the pransing horses, and of the jumping chariots.

به صداى شلاّقها، غرّش چرخ ارّابه‌ها، تاخت و تاز اسبها و جهش ارّابه‌ها گوش بدهید!

The horseman lifteth up both the bright sword and the glittering spear: and there is a multitude of slain, and a great number of carcases; and there is none end of their corpses; they stumble upon their corpses:

سواران براى حمله آماده‌اند. شمشیرها و نیزه‌هاى برّاق آنها مى‌درخشند. اجساد بی‌شمار کشته‌شدگان در همه‌جا بچشم مى‌خورد و سربازان دشمن در هنگام رفتن بر آنها مى‌افتند.

Because of the multitude of the whoredoms of the wellfavoured harlot, the mistress of witchcrafts, that selleth nations through her whoredoms, and families through her witchcrafts.

این نینواى زناکار و جادوگر، مانند یک زن قشنگ با افسونِ زیبایى خود مردم را به دام مرگ مى‌فرستاد و با فریب و نیرنگ آنها را بنده و غلام خود مى‌ساخت.

Behold, I am against thee, saith the LORD of hosts; and I will discover thy skirts upon thy face, and I will shew the nations thy nakedness, and the kingdoms thy shame.

خداوند متعال مى‌فرماید: «اى نینوا، من تو را مجازات مى‌کنم و برهنه‌ات مى‌کنم تا در پیش تمام اقوام خوار و رسوا شوى.

And I will cast abominable filth upon thee, and make thee vile, and will set thee as a gazingstock.

تو را با کثافت مى‌پوشانم و مایهٔ عبرت مردم مى‌سازم.

And it shall come to pass, that all they that look upon thee shall flee from thee, and say, Nineveh is laid waste: who will bemoan her? whence shall I seek comforters for thee?

همه از دیدن تو به عقب خواهند رفت و مى‌گویند: 'نینوا ویران شد. کسى به حال او افسوس نمى‌خورد و تسلّى‌اش نمى‌دهد.'»

Art thou better than populous No, that was situate among the rivers, that had the waters round about it, whose rampart was the sea, and her wall was from the sea?

اى نینوا، آیا تو بهتر از تیبس، پایتخت مصر هستى؟ آن شهر را هم رود نیل از هر طرف احاطه کرده و مانند دیوارى از آن محافظت مى‌کرد.

Ethiopia and Egypt were her strength, and it was infinite; Put and Lubim were thy helpers.

حبشه و تمام قلمرو مصر تحت فرمانش بودند. قدرت و عظمتش حد و اندازه نداشت و کشورهاى فوط و لیبى با او متّحد بودند.

Yet was she carried away, she went into captivity: her young children also were dashed in pieces at the top of all the streets: and they cast lots for her honourable men, and all her great men were bound in chains.

با این‌همه، مردم تیبس اسیر و تبعید شدند. کودکانشان را در کوچه و بازار زدند و کشتند. رهبران و بزرگان آنها را به زنجیر کشیدند و آنها را با قرعه بین خود تقسیم کردند.

Thou also shalt be drunken: thou shalt be hid, thou also shalt seek strength because of the enemy.

تو اى نینوا، مانند اشخاص مست، گیج مى‌شوى و براى اینکه از شر دشمنان در امان باشى، خود را پنهان مى‌کنى.

All thy strong holds shall be like fig trees with the firstripe figs: if they be shaken, they shall even fall into the mouth of the eater.

قلعه‌هایت مانند درختان انجیرى هستند که میوه‌هایش رسیده است. وقتى درختان را تکان بدهند، میوه‌هایش به دهان خورنده مى‌ریزد.

Behold, thy people in the midst of thee are women: the gates of thy land shall be set wide open unto thine enemies: the fire shall devour thy bars.

سربازانت مثل زنان هستند. کشورت در برابر قواى دشمن بی‌دفاع مانده است و دروازه‌هایت با پشت‌بندهایشان در آتش مى‌سوزند.

Draw thee waters for the siege, fortify thy strong holds: go into clay, and tread the morter, make strong the brickkiln.

چون بزودى محاصره مى‌شوى آب ذخیره کن، قلعه‌هایت را محکم کن و گِل را آماده ساز و براى ساختن دیوارهایت خشت بزن.

There shall the fire devour thee; the sword shall cut thee off, it shall eat thee up like the cankerworm: make thyself many as the cankerworm, make thyself many as the locusts.

با وجود این، در آتش خواهى سوخت، با شمشیر قطعه‌قطعه خواهى شد و دشمنانت تو را مانند ملخى که محصول را مى‌خورد، از بین مى‌برند. مانند مور و ملخ، زیاد و بی‌شمار شدى.

Thou hast multiplied thy merchants above the stars of heaven: the cankerworm spoileth, and flieth away.

تعداد تاجرانت بیشترتر از ستارگان آسمان بودند، ولى همگى مانند ملخها بال گشودند و پرواز کردند.

Thy crowned are as the locusts, and thy captains as the great grasshoppers, which camp in the hedges in the cold day, but when the sun ariseth they flee away, and their place is not known where they are.

حاکمان و پیشوایانت مانند ملخهایى هستند که در روزهاى سرد بر روى دیوارها جمع مى‌شوند، امّا وقتى آفتاب مى‌درخشد و هوا گرم مى‌شود، همگى پرواز مى‌کنند و ناپدید می‌گردند.

Thy shepherds slumber, O king of Assyria: thy nobles shall dwell in the dust: thy people is scattered upon the mountains, and no man gathereth them.

اى امپراتور آشور، حاکمانت مُرده و اعیان و اشرافت به خواب ابدى رفته‌اند. قومت بر کوهها پراکنده شده‌اند و کسى نیست که آنها را جمع کند و بازگرداند.

There is no healing of thy bruise; thy wound is grievous: all that hear the bruit of thee shall clap the hands over thee: for upon whom hath not thy wickedness passed continually?

زخمت دارویى ندارد و جراحتت درمان ناپذیر است. همهٔ کسانى‌‌که خبر نابودى تو را مى‌شنوند، از شادى دست مى‌زنند، زیرا هیچ‌کسى نیست که از دست تو ظلم و ستم ندیده باشد.
