Judges 18

In those days there was no king in Israel: and in those days the tribe of the Danites sought them an inheritance to dwell in; for unto that day all their inheritance had not fallen unto them among the tribes of Israel.

در آن زمان در اسرائیل پادشاهی نبود. طایفهٔ دان در جستجوی جایی برای سکونت بودند؛ زیرا تا آن وقت، طایفهٔ دان تنها طایفه‌ای بود که هنوز در بین طایفه‌های اسرائیل جایی برای سکونت نیافته بود.

And the children of Dan sent of their family five men from their coasts, men of valour, from Zorah, and from Eshtaol, to spy out the land, and to search it; and they said unto them, Go, search the land: who when they came to mount Ephraim, to the house of Micah, they lodged there.

پس آنها پنج نفر از جنگجویان زبدهٔ خود را، از صرعه و اشتاول فرستادند تا وضعیّت سرزمینی را که می‌خواستند در آن سکونت کنند بررسی نمایند. پس آنها به کوهستان افرایم رفتند و در خانهٔ میخا اقامت کردند.

When they were by the house of Micah, they knew the voice of the young man the Levite: and they turned in thither, and said unto him, Who brought thee hither? and what makest thou in this place? and what hast thou here?

آنها در آنجا صدای لاوی جوان را شناختند. سپس او را به گوشه‌ای برده پرسیدند: «تو را چه کسی به اینجا آورد؟ در اینجا چه می‌کنی و وظیفه‌ات چیست؟»

And he said unto them, Thus and thus dealeth Micah with me, and hath hired me, and I am his priest.

او پاسخ داد: «من با میخا قراردادی بسته‌ام. او به من حقوق می‌دهد تا کاهن او باشم.»

And they said unto him, Ask counsel, we pray thee, of God, that we may know whether our way which we go shall be prosperous.

آنها به او گفتند: «لطفاً از خداوند سؤال کن که آیا ما در این سفر کامیاب می‌شویم یا نه.»

And the priest said unto them, Go in peace: before the LORD is your way wherein ye go.

کاهن به آنها گفت: «بسلامت بروید، زیرا در این سفر خداوند همراه شماست.»

Then the five men departed, and came to Laish, and saw the people that were therein, how they dwelt careless, after the manner of the Zidonians, quiet and secure; and there was no magistrate in the land, that might put them to shame in any thing; and they were far from the Zidonians, and had no business with any man.

بعد آن پنج نفر به راه افتادند و به لایش رسیدند. در آنجا مردمی را دیدند که در امنیّت زندگی می‌کردند و مانند ساکنان صیدون ساکت و آرام بودند. ثروت فراوان دارند و در روی زمین چیزی کم ندارند. علاوه بر این از صیدونیان هم دور هستند و با دیگران هم کاری ندارند.

And they came unto their brethren to Zorah and Eshtaol: and their brethren said unto them, What say ye?

وقتی پیش مردم خود به صرعه و اشتاول برگشتند، مردم از آنها پرسیدند: «چه خبری دارید؟»

And they said, Arise, that we may go up against them: for we have seen the land, and, behold, it is very good: and are ye still? be not slothful to go, and to enter to possess the land.

آنها جواب دادند: «برای حمله آماده شوید. ما آن زمین را دیدیم. بسیار عالی است. درنگ نکنید، بلکه فوراً بروید و زمین را تسخیر نمایید.

When ye go, ye shall come unto a people secure, and to a large land: for God hath given it into your hands; a place where there is no want of any thing that is in the earth.

وقتی به آنجا برسید مردمی را می‌بینید که بی‌دفاع هستند و سرزمین‌شان نیز وسیع و حاصلخیز است و چیزی کم ندارد و خداوند آن را به شما داده است.»

And there went from thence of the family of the Danites, out of Zorah and out of Eshtaol, six hundred men appointed with weapons of war.

پس ششصد نفر از طایفهٔ دان، که همه مسلّح بودند، از صرعه و اشتاول حرکت کردند.

And they went up, and pitched in Kirjath–jearim, in Judah: wherefore they called that place Mahaneh–dan unto this day: behold, it is behind Kirjath–jearim.

درسر راه خود در قریت یعاریم، در سرزمین یهودا اردو زدند. و آن اردوگاه را که در غرب قریت یعاریم بود، اردوگاه دان نامیدند که تا به امروز به همین نام خوانده می‌شود.

And they passed thence unto mount Ephraim, and came unto the house of Micah.

آنها از آنجا گذشته، به کوهستان افرایم و به خانه میخا رفتند.

Then answered the five men that went to spy out the country of Laish, and said unto their brethren, Do ye know that there is in these houses an ephod, and teraphim, and a graven image, and a molten image? now therefore consider what ye have to do.

آن پنج نفر که برای جاسوسی به لایش رفته بودند، به مردم گفتند: «می‌دانید که در این خانه‌ها بُتهای تراشیده و ریختگی وجود دارند. پس حال خوب فکر کنید که چه باید کرد.»

And they turned thitherward, and came to the house of the young man the Levite, even unto the house of Micah, and saluted him.

آن پنج نفر پیش جوان لاوی به خانهٔ میخا رفتند و با او به گفت‌وگو پرداختند.

And the six hundred men appointed with their weapons of war, which were of the children of Dan, stood by the entering of the gate.

آن ششصد نفر مردان دان، که مسلّح به سلاح جنگی بودند، در ورودی دروازه ایستاده بودند.

And the five men that went to spy out the land went up, and came in thither, and took the graven image, and the ephod, and the teraphim, and the molten image: and the priest stood in the entering of the gate with the six hundred men that were appointed with weapons of war.

آن پنج نفر جاسوس به داخل بتخانه رفتند و بُتها را برداشتند. در عین حال، کاهن با مردان مسلّح در ورودی دروازه ایستاده بود.

And these went into Micah's house, and fetched the carved image, the ephod, and the teraphim, and the molten image. Then said the priest unto them, What do ye?

وقتی کاهن دید که آنها مجسمه‌ها را می‌برند، از آنها پرسید: «چه می‌کنید؟»

And they said unto him, Hold thy peace, lay thine hand upon thy mouth, and go with us, and be to us a father and a priest: is it better for thee to be a priest unto the house of one man, or that thou be a priest unto a tribe and a family in Israel?

آنها جواب دادند: «ساکت باش، صدایت را در نیاور! همراه ما بیا و پدر و کاهن ما باش. کدام بهتر است، کاهن خانهٔ یک نفر باشی، یا کاهن یک خانوادهٔ طایفهٔ اسرائیل؟»

And the priest's heart was glad, and he took the ephod, and the teraphim, and the graven image, and went in the midst of the people.

دل کاهن بسیار شاد شد و بُتها را گرفت و همراه آنها رفت.

So they turned and departed, and put the little ones and the cattle and the carriage before them.

آنها دوباره به راه افتادند. اطفال، اموال و اثاث خود را در صف جلو قرار دادند.

And when they were a good way from the house of Micah, the men that were in the houses near to Micah's house were gathered together, and overtook the children of Dan.

وقتی مسافتی از خانه میخا دور شدند، میخا و مردانی که در اطراف منزل او بودند، جمع شده به تعقیب مردان دان رفتند

And they cried unto the children of Dan. And they turned their faces, and said unto Micah, What aileth thee, that thou comest with such a company?

و صدا کردند که بایستند. آنها برگشتند و از میخا پرسیدند: «چرا ما را با این مردان تعقیب می‌کنید؟»

And he said, Ye have taken away my gods which I made, and the priest, and ye are gone away: and what have I more? and what is this that ye say unto me, What aileth thee?

او جواب داد: «شما بُتهای مرا که ساخته بودم و همچنین کاهن مرا گرفته بردید. اینک هیچ چیز برای من باقی نگذاشتید، بازهم می‌پرسید: چرا شما را با این مردان تعقیب می‌کنیم؟»

And the children of Dan said unto him, Let not thy voice be heard among us, lest angry fellows run upon thee, and thou lose thy life, with the lives of thy household.

آنها گفتند: «صدایت را بلند نکن، مبادا مردان ما بشنوند و خشمگین شده، به شما حمله کنند و شما و خانوادهٔ شما را بکشند.»

And the children of Dan went their way: and when Micah saw that they were too strong for him, he turned and went back unto his house.

مردم دان این را گفته و به راه خود ادامه دادند. چون میخا فهمید که یارای مقاومت با آنها را ندارد، برگشت و به خانهٔ خود رفت.

And they took the things which Micah had made, and the priest which he had, and came unto Laish, unto a people that were at quiet and secure: and they smote them with the edge of the sword, and burnt the city with fire.

مردان دان، با آنچه که میخا ساخته بود، به همراه کاهن او به شهر آرام و بی‌دفاع لایش رفتند. مردم آنجا را کشتند و شهر را آتش زدند.

And there was no deliverer, because it was far from Zidon, and they had no business with any man; and it was in the valley that lieth by Beth–rehob. And they built a city, and dwelt therein.

کسی نبود که به آنها کمک کند، زیرا از صیدون بسیار دور بودند و با مردمان دیگر هم رابطه‌ای نداشتند. آن شهر در یک دشت، در نزدیکی رحوب، واقع بود. مردم طایفهٔ دان آن شهر را دوباره آباد کردند و در آنجا ساکن شدند.

And they called the name of the city Dan, after the name of Dan their father, who was born unto Israel: howbeit the name of the city was Laish at the first.

آن شهر را که قبلاً لایش نام داشت، به افتخار جَدّ خود، دان، که یکی از پسران یعقوب بود، دان نامیدند.

And the children of Dan set up the graven image: and Jonathan, the son of Gershom, the son of Manasseh, he and his sons were priests to the tribe of Dan until the day of the captivity of the land.

مردم دان بُتها را برای خود در جای مخصوصی قرار دادند. یوناتان، پسر جَرشوم نوه موسی و پسرانش تا زمانی که مردم به اسارت برده شدند، کاهنان طایفهٔ دان بودند.

And they set them up Micah's graven image, which he made, all the time that the house of God was in Shiloh.

طایفهٔ دان تا روزی که خیمهٔ خدا در شیلوه بود، بُتهای میخا را پرستش می‌کردند.
