Ecclesiastes 4

So I returned, and considered all the oppressions that are done under the sun: and behold the tears of such as were oppressed, and they had no comforter; and on the side of their oppressors there was power; but they had no comforter.

آنگاه دوباره در مورد ظلم و ستمی که در این جهان جریان دارد، فکر کردم. مردم مظلوم را دیدم که اشک می‌ریزند، امّا هیچ‌کس آنها را تسلّی نمی‌دهد. کسی به دادشان نمی‌رسد، چون کسانی‌که بر آنها جفا می‌کنند دارای زور و قدرت هستند.

Wherefore I praised the dead which are already dead more than the living which are yet alive.

من حسرت کسانی را می‌خوردم که مُردند و از این دنیا رفتند. وضع آنها بهتر از کسانی است که هنوز زنده هستند.

Yea, better is he than both they, which hath not yet been, who hath not seen the evil work that is done under the sun.

امّا کسانی‌که تا به حال به دنیا نیامده‌اند خوشبخت‌ترند، زیرا ظلمی را که در جهان می‌شود، ندیده‌اند.

Again, I considered all travail, and every right work, that for this a man is envied of his neighbour. This is also vanity and vexation of spirit.

بعد مشاهده کردم که موفقیّت و پیشرفت یک شخص نتیجهٔ حسادت و رقابت او با دیگران است. این کار هم مانند دویدن به دنبال باد بیهوده است.

The fool foldeth his hands together, and eateth his own flesh.

مرد احمق دست روی دست گذاشته کار نمی‌کند و به این ترتیب از گرسنگی، گوشت بدن خود را می‌خورد.

Better is an handful with quietness, than both the hands full with travail and vexation of spirit.

یک دست پر ولی راحت، بهتر است از دو دست پر، امّا با مشقت. این بیهوده و دنبال باد دویدن است.

Then I returned, and I saw vanity under the sun.

همچنین نمونهٔ بیهودهٔ دیگری را در این دنیا دیدم

There is one alone, and there is not a second; yea, he hath neither child nor brother: yet is there no end of all his labour; neither is his eye satisfied with riches; neither saith he, For whom do I labour, and bereave my soul of good? This is also vanity, yea, it is a sore travail.

و این در مورد مردی است که تنها زندگی می‌کند، نه پسری دارد و نه برادری، امّا زحمت زیاد می‌کشد تا پول و دارایی جمع کند و چشمش از ثروت سیر نمی‌شود. او برای چه کسی زحمت می‌کشد و خود را از لذّتهای زندگی محروم می‌کند؟ او زندگی بیهوده و مشقّت‌باری دارد.

Two are better than one; because they have a good reward for their labour.

دو نفر از یک نفر بهترند، زیرا نتیجهٔ بهتری از کارشان به دست می‌آورند.

For if they fall, the one will lift up his fellow: but woe to him that is alone when he falleth; for he hath not another to help him up.

هرگاه یکی از آنها بیفتد، دیگری او را بلند می‌کند. امّا وای به حال کسی‌که تنها باشد و بیفتد، زیرا کسی را ندارد که او را بلند کند.

Again, if two lie together, then they have heat: but how can one be warm alone?

اگر دو نفر در کنار هم بخوابند گرم می‌شوند، امّا کسی‌که تنهاست چگونه خود را گرم کند؟

And if one prevail against him, two shall withstand him; and a threefold cord is not quickly broken.

اگر کسی تنها باشد و به او حمله شود، زود از پای در می‌آید، امّا اگر دو نفر باشند، می‌توانند از خود دفاع کنند. ریسمان سه‌لا به راحتی پاره نمی‌شود.

Better is a poor and a wise child than an old and foolish king, who will no more be admonished.

جوان فقیر امّا دانا، بهتر از پادشاه پیر و احمق است که به مشورت دیگران توجّه نمی‌کند.

For out of prison he cometh to reign; whereas also he that is born in his kingdom becometh poor.

این چنین جوانی ممکن است که از زندان آزاد شده به مقام پادشاهی برسد.

I considered all the living which walk under the sun, with the second child that shall stand up in his stead.

دیدم که مردم این جهان مایلند از این جوانی که جانشین آن پادشاه شده است، پیروی کنند.

There is no end of all the people, even of all that have been before them: they also that come after shall not rejoice in him. Surely this also is vanity and vexation of spirit.

او بر عدّهٔ بی‌شماری حکومت می‌کند. امّا نسل بعدی به او رغبتی نشان نخواهد داد. به راستی این نیز بیهوده و در پی باد دویدن است.
