I Samuel 4

And the word of Samuel came to all Israel. Now Israel went out against the Philistines to battle, and pitched beside Eben–ezer: and the Philistines pitched in Aphek.

یوں سموایل کا کلام سَیلا سے نکل کر پورے اسرائیل میں پھیل گیا۔ ایک دن اسرائیل کی فلستیوں کے ساتھ جنگ چھڑ گئی۔ اسرائیلیوں نے لڑنے کے لئے نکل کر ابن عزر کے پاس اپنی لشکرگاہ لگائی جبکہ فلستیوں نے افیق کے پاس اپنے ڈیرے ڈالے۔

And the Philistines put themselves in array against Israel: and when they joined battle, Israel was smitten before the Philistines: and they slew of the army in the field about four thousand men.

پہلے فلستیوں نے اسرائیلیوں پر حملہ کیا۔ لڑتے لڑتے اُنہوں نے اسرائیل کو شکست دی۔ تقریباً 4,000 اسرائیلی میدانِ جنگ میں ہلاک ہوئے۔

And when the people were come into the camp, the elders of Israel said, Wherefore hath the LORD smitten us to day before the Philistines? Let us fetch the ark of the covenant of the LORD out of Shiloh unto us, that, when it cometh among us, it may save us out of the hand of our enemies.

فوج لشکرگاہ میں واپس آئی تو اسرائیل کے بزرگ سوچنے لگے، ”رب نے فلستیوں کو ہم پر کیوں فتح پانے دی؟ آؤ، ہم رب کے عہد کا صندوق سَیلا سے لے آئیں تاکہ وہ ہمارے ساتھ چل کر ہمیں دشمن سے بچائے۔“

So the people sent to Shiloh, that they might bring from thence the ark of the covenant of the LORD of hosts, which dwelleth between the cherubims: and the two sons of Eli, Hophni and Phinehas, were there with the ark of the covenant of God.

چنانچہ عہد کا صندوق جس کے اوپر رب الافواج کروبی فرشتوں کے درمیان تخت نشین ہے سَیلا سے لایا گیا۔ عیلی کے دو بیٹے حُفنی اور فینحاس بھی ساتھ آئے۔

And when the ark of the covenant of the LORD came into the camp, all Israel shouted with a great shout, so that the earth rang again.

جب عہد کا صندوق لشکرگاہ میں پہنچا تو اسرائیلی نہایت خوش ہو کر بلند آواز سے نعرے لگانے لگے۔ اِتنا شور مچ گیا کہ زمین ہل گئی۔

And when the Philistines heard the noise of the shout, they said, What meaneth the noise of this great shout in the camp of the Hebrews? And they understood that the ark of the LORD was come into the camp.

یہ سن کر فلستی چونک اُٹھے اور ایک دوسرے سے پوچھنے لگے، ”یہ کیسا شور ہے جو اسرائیلی لشکرگاہ میں ہو رہا ہے؟“ جب پتا چلا کہ رب کے عہد کا صندوق اسرائیلی لشکرگاہ میں آ گیا ہے

And the Philistines were afraid, for they said, God is come into the camp. And they said, Woe unto us! for there hath not been such a thing heretofore.

تو وہ گھبرا کر چلّائے، ”اُن کا دیوتا اُن کی لشکرگاہ میں آ گیا ہے۔ ہائے، ہمارا ستیاناس ہو گیا ہے! پہلے تو ایسا کبھی نہیں ہوا ہے۔

Woe unto us! who shall deliver us out of the hand of these mighty Gods? these are the Gods that smote the Egyptians with all the plagues in the wilderness.

ہم پر افسوس! کون ہمیں اِن طاقت ور دیوتاؤں سے بچائے گا؟ کیونکہ اِن ہی نے ریگستان میں مصریوں کو ہر قسم کی بلا سے مار کر ہلاک کر دیا تھا۔

Be strong, and quit yourselves like men, O ye Philistines, that ye be not servants unto the Hebrews, as they have been to you: quit yourselves like men, and fight.

بھائیو، اب دلیر ہو اور مردانگی دکھاؤ، ورنہ ہم اُسی طرح عبرانیوں کے غلام بن جائیں گے جیسے وہ اب تک ہمارے غلام تھے۔ مردانگی دکھا کر لڑو!“

And the Philistines fought, and Israel was smitten, and they fled every man into his tent: and there was a very great slaughter; for there fell of Israel thirty thousand footmen.

آپس میں ایسی باتیں کرتے کرتے فلستی لڑنے کے لئے نکلے اور اسرائیل کو شکست دی۔ ہر طرف قتل عام نظر آیا، اور 30,000 پیادے اسرائیلی کام آئے۔ باقی سب فرار ہو کر اپنے اپنے گھروں میں چھپ گئے۔

And the ark of God was taken; and the two sons of Eli, Hophni and Phinehas, were slain.

عیلی کے دو بیٹے حُفنی اور فینحاس بھی اُسی دن ہلاک ہوئے، اور اللہ کے عہد کا صندوق فلستیوں کے قبضے میں آ گیا۔

And there ran a man of Benjamin out of the army, and came to Shiloh the same day with his clothes rent, and with earth upon his head.

اُسی دن بن یمین کے قبیلے کا ایک آدمی میدانِ جنگ سے بھاگ کر سَیلا پہنچ گیا۔ اُس کے کپڑے پھٹے ہوئے تھے اور سر پر خاک تھی۔

And when he came, lo, Eli sat upon a seat by the wayside watching: for his heart trembled for the ark of God. And when the man came into the city, and told it, all the city cried out.

عیلی سڑک کے کنارے اپنی کرسی پر بیٹھا تھا۔ وہ اب اندھا ہو چکا تھا، کیونکہ اُس کی عمر 98 سال تھی۔ وہ بڑی بےچینی سے راستے پر دھیان دے رہا تھا تاکہ جنگ کی کوئی تازہ خبر مل جائے، کیونکہ اُسے اِس بات کی بڑی فکر تھی کہ اللہ کا صندوق لشکرگاہ میں ہے۔ جب وہ آدمی شہر میں داخل ہوا اور لوگوں کو سارا ماجرا سنایا تو پورا شہر چلّانے لگا۔ جب عیلی نے شور سنا تو اُس نے پوچھا، ”یہ کیا شور ہے؟“ بن یمینی دوڑ کر عیلی کے پاس آیا اور بولا،

And when Eli heard the noise of the crying, he said, What meaneth the noise of this tumult? And the man came in hastily, and told Eli.

عیلی سڑک کے کنارے اپنی کرسی پر بیٹھا تھا۔ وہ اب اندھا ہو چکا تھا، کیونکہ اُس کی عمر 98 سال تھی۔ وہ بڑی بےچینی سے راستے پر دھیان دے رہا تھا تاکہ جنگ کی کوئی تازہ خبر مل جائے، کیونکہ اُسے اِس بات کی بڑی فکر تھی کہ اللہ کا صندوق لشکرگاہ میں ہے۔ جب وہ آدمی شہر میں داخل ہوا اور لوگوں کو سارا ماجرا سنایا تو پورا شہر چلّانے لگا۔ جب عیلی نے شور سنا تو اُس نے پوچھا، ”یہ کیا شور ہے؟“ بن یمینی دوڑ کر عیلی کے پاس آیا اور بولا،

Now Eli was ninety and eight years old; and his eyes were dim, that he could not see.

عیلی سڑک کے کنارے اپنی کرسی پر بیٹھا تھا۔ وہ اب اندھا ہو چکا تھا، کیونکہ اُس کی عمر 98 سال تھی۔ وہ بڑی بےچینی سے راستے پر دھیان دے رہا تھا تاکہ جنگ کی کوئی تازہ خبر مل جائے، کیونکہ اُسے اِس بات کی بڑی فکر تھی کہ اللہ کا صندوق لشکرگاہ میں ہے۔ جب وہ آدمی شہر میں داخل ہوا اور لوگوں کو سارا ماجرا سنایا تو پورا شہر چلّانے لگا۔ جب عیلی نے شور سنا تو اُس نے پوچھا، ”یہ کیا شور ہے؟“ بن یمینی دوڑ کر عیلی کے پاس آیا اور بولا،

And the man said unto Eli, I am he that came out of the army, and I fled to day out of the army. And he said, What is there done, my son?

”مَیں میدانِ جنگ سے آیا ہوں۔ آج ہی مَیں وہاں سے فرار ہوا۔“ عیلی نے پوچھا، ”بیٹا، کیا ہوا؟“

And the messenger answered and said, Israel is fled before the Philistines, and there hath been also a great slaughter among the people, and thy two sons also, Hophni and Phinehas, are dead, and the ark of God is taken.

قاصد نے جواب دیا، ”اسرائیلی فلستیوں کے سامنے فرار ہوئے۔ فوج کو ہر طرف شکست ماننی پڑی، اور آپ کے دونوں بیٹے حُفنی اور فینحاس بھی مارے گئے ہیں۔ افسوس، اللہ کا صندوق بھی دشمن کے قبضے میں آ گیا ہے۔“

And it came to pass, when he made mention of the ark of God, that he fell from off the seat backward by the side of the gate, and his neck brake, and he died: for he was an old man, and heavy. And he had judged Israel forty years.

عہد کے صندوق کا ذکر سنتے ہی عیلی اپنی کرسی پر سے پیچھے کی طرف گر گیا۔ چونکہ وہ بوڑھا اور بھاری بھرکم تھا اِس لئے اُس کی گردن ٹوٹ گئی اور وہ وہیں مقدِس کے دروازے کے پاس ہی مر گیا۔ وہ 40 سال اسرائیل کا قاضی رہا تھا۔

And his daughter in law, Phinehas' wife, was with child, near to be delivered: and when she heard the tidings that the ark of God was taken, and that her father in law and her husband were dead, she bowed herself and travailed; for her pains came upon her.

اُس وقت عیلی کی بہو یعنی فینحاس کی بیوی کا پاؤں بھاری تھا اور بچہ پیدا ہونے والا تھا۔ جب اُس نے سنا کہ اللہ کا صندوق دشمن کے ہاتھ میں آ گیا ہے اور کہ سُسر اور شوہر دونوں مر گئے ہیں تو اُسے اِتنا سخت صدمہ پہنچا کہ وہ شدید دردِ زہ میں مبتلا ہو گئی۔ وہ جھک گئی، اور بچہ پیدا ہوا۔

And about the time of her death the women that stood by her said unto her, Fear not; for thou hast born a son. But she answered not, neither did she regard it.

اُس کی جان نکلنے لگی تو دائیوں نے اُس کی حوصلہ افزائی کر کے کہا، ”ڈرو مت! تمہارے بیٹا پیدا ہوا ہے۔“ لیکن ماں نے نہ جواب دیا، نہ بات پر دھیان دیا۔

And she named the child I–chabod, saying, The glory is departed from Israel: because the ark of God was taken, and because of her father in law and her husband.

کیونکہ وہ اللہ کے صندوق کے چھن جانے اور سُسر اور شوہر کی موت کے باعث نہایت بےدل ہو گئی تھی۔ اُس نے کہا، ”بیٹے کا نام یکبود یعنی ’جلال کہاں رہا‘ ہے، کیونکہ اللہ کے صندوق کے چھن جانے سے اللہ کا جلال اسرائیل سے جاتا رہا ہے۔“

And she said, The glory is departed from Israel: for the ark of God is taken.

کیونکہ وہ اللہ کے صندوق کے چھن جانے اور سُسر اور شوہر کی موت کے باعث نہایت بےدل ہو گئی تھی۔ اُس نے کہا، ”بیٹے کا نام یکبود یعنی ’جلال کہاں رہا‘ ہے، کیونکہ اللہ کے صندوق کے چھن جانے سے اللہ کا جلال اسرائیل سے جاتا رہا ہے۔“
