Ecclesiastes 12

Remember now thy Creator in the days of thy youth, while the evil days come not, nor the years draw nigh, when thou shalt say, I have no pleasure in them;

آفرینندهٔ خود را در روزهای جوانیّت به‌یادآور، پیش از آن که روزها و سالهای سخت برسند و بگویی: «من دیگر از زندگی لذّتی نمی‌برم.»

While the sun, or the light, or the moon, or the stars, be not darkened, nor the clouds return after the rain:

آفرینندهٔ خود را به یادآور، قبل از آن که آفتاب و ماه و ستارگان، دیگر بر زندگی تو ندرخشند و ابرهای تیره، آسمان زندگیت را تاریک کنند،

In the day when the keepers of the house shall tremble, and the strong men shall bow themselves, and the grinders cease because they are few, and those that look out of the windows be darkened,

دستهایت که از تو محافظت می‌کنند بلرزند و پاهایت سست گردند، دندانهایت بیفتند و دیگر نتوانی غذا بخوری، چشمانت کم نور و گوشهایت سنگین شوند

And the doors shall be shut in the streets, when the sound of the grinding is low, and he shall rise up at the voice of the bird, and all the daughters of musick shall be brought low;

و نتوانند سر و صدای کوچه و آواز آسیاب و نوای موسیقی را بشنوند، امّا صدای پرندگان از خواب بیدارت کند،

Also when they shall be afraid of that which is high, and fears shall be in the way, and the almond tree shall flourish, and the grasshopper shall be a burden, and desire shall fail: because man goeth to his long home, and the mourners go about the streets:

از بلندی بترسی، و با هراس راه بروی، موهای سرت سفید شوند، نیرویت از بین برود و اشتهایت را از دست بدهی. ما رهسپار ابدیّت خواهیم شد و در کوچه‌ها نوحه‌گری خواهد بود،

Or ever the silver cord be loosed, or the golden bowl be broken, or the pitcher be broken at the fountain, or the wheel broken at the cistern.

پیش از آنکه رشتهٔ نقره‌ای عمر گسسته شود و جام طلا بشکند و کوزه در کنار چشمه خُرد گردد و چرخ بر سر چاه شکسته شود.

Then shall the dust return to the earth as it was: and the spirit shall return unto God who gave it.

بدن ما که از خاک ساخته شده است، به خاک برمی‌گردد و روح نزد خدا می‌رود که آن را به ما بخشیده بود.

Vanity of vanities, saith the preacher; all is vanity.

حکیم می‌گوید: «بیهودگی است! بیهودگی است! همه‌چیز بیهوده است!»

And moreover, because the preacher was wise, he still taught the people knowledge; yea, he gave good heed, and sought out, and set in order many proverbs.

حکیم چون شخص دانایی بود، آنچه را که می‌دانست به مردم تعلیم داد و پس از تحقیق و تفکّر امثال زیادی را نوشت.

The preacher sought to find out acceptable words: and that which was written was upright, even words of truth.

حکیم کوشش زیادی کرد تا حقایق را با زبان ساده و عبارات شیرین بیان کند.

The words of the wise are as goads, and as nails fastened by the masters of assemblies, which are given from one shepherd.

کلام شخص دانا مانند سُک گاورانان است و همچون میخهایی است که محکم به زمین کوبیده شده باشند.

And further, by these, my son, be admonished: of making many books there is no end; and much study is a weariness of the flesh.

امّا فرزندم، علاوه بر اینها، برحذر باش؛ نوشتن کتابها پایانی ندارد و مطالعهٔ زیاد انسان را خسته می‌سازد.

Let us hear the conclusion of the whole matter: Fear God, and keep his commandments: for this is the whole duty of man.

خلاصه کلام اینکه، انسان باید از خدا بترسد و اوامر او را بجا آورد، زیرا که این تمام وظیفهٔ اوست؛

For God shall bring every work into judgment, with every secret thing, whether it be good, or whether it be evil.

چون خدا هر کار خوب یا بد انسان را، حتّی اگر در خفا هم انجام شده باشد، داوری خواهد کرد.
