I Corinthians 8

Now as touching things offered unto idols, we know that we all have knowledge. Knowledge puffeth up, but charity edifieth.

و امّا دربارهٔ خوراکهای تقدیم شده به بُتها: البتّه همان‌طور كه شما می‌گویید «همهٔ ما اشخاص دانایی هستیم.» ولی چنین دانشی آدم را مغرور می‌سازد، امّا محبّت بنا می‌کند.

And if any man think that he knoweth any thing, he knoweth nothing yet as he ought to know.

اگر كسی گمان می‌کند كه بر همه‌چیز واقف است، واقعاً آن‌طوری‌که باید و شاید هنوز چیزی نمی‌داند.

But if any man love God, the same is known of him.

امّا کسی‌که خدا را دوست دارد به وسیلهٔ خدا شناخته شده است.

As concerning therefore the eating of those things that are offered in sacrifice unto idols, we know that an idol is nothing in the world, and that there is none other God but one.

پس دربارهٔ خوراکهایی كه به بُتها تقدیم شده است: ما می‌دانیم كه بت واقعیّت ندارد و خدای دیگری جز خدای یكتا نیست.

For though there be that are called gods, whether in heaven or in earth, (as there be gods many, and lords many,)

حتّی اگر به قول آنها خدایانی در آسمان و زمین وجود داشته باشد، (همان‌طور كه می‌بینیم آنها به این‌گونه خدایان و خداوندان معتقدند)

But to us there is but one God, the Father, of whom are all things, and we in him; and one Lord Jesus Christ, by whom are all things, and we by him.

برای ما فقط یک خدا هست یعنی خدای پدر كه آفرینندهٔ همه‌چیز است و ما برای او زندگی می‌کنیم و فقط یک خداوند وجود دارد، یعنی عیسی مسیح كه همه‌چیز به وسیلهٔ او آفریده شد و ما در او زیست می‌کنیم.

Howbeit there is not in every man that knowledge: for some with conscience of the idol unto this hour eat it as a thing offered unto an idol; and their conscience being weak is defiled.

امّا همهٔ مردم این را نمی‌دانند، بعضی چنان با بُتها خو گرفته‌اند كه تا به امروز خوردن خوراكهایی را كه به بُتها تقدیم شده، خوردن قربانی بُتها می‌دانند و هروقت از آن بخورند وجدان ضعیفشان آلوده می‌گردد.

But meat commendeth us not to God: for neither, if we eat, are we the better; neither, if we eat not, are we the worse.

البتّه خوراک، ما را به خدا نزدیكتر نخواهد ساخت؛ نه از خوردن آن غذاها نفعی عاید ما می‌شود و نه از نخوردن آنها ضرری.

But take heed lest by any means this liberty of yours become a stumblingblock to them that are weak.

امّا مواظب باشید، مبادا این آزادی عمل شما به نحوی باعث لغزش اشخاص ضعیف گردد.

For if any man see thee which hast knowledge sit at meat in the idol's temple, shall not the conscience of him which is weak be emboldened to eat those things which are offered to idols;

اگر كسی تو را كه شخص دانایی هستی بر سر سفرهٔ بتكده نشسته ببیند، آیا این کار تو كسی را كه دارای وجدان ضعیفی است، به خوردن قربانی‌های بت تشویق نخواهد كرد؟

And through thy knowledge shall the weak brother perish, for whom Christ died?

پس روشنفكری تو باعث می‌شود شخص ضعیفی كه مسیح به‌خاطر او مرد، نابود شود.

But when ye sin so against the brethren, and wound their weak conscience, ye sin against Christ.

و به این ترتیب شما نسبت به ایمانداران دیگر گناه می‌کنید و وجدان ضعیف آنها را جریحه‌دار می‌سازید و از این بدتر، نسبت به خود مسیح هم گناه می‌کنید!

Wherefore, if meat make my brother to offend, I will eat no flesh while the world standeth, lest I make my brother to offend.

بنابراین، اگر خوراكی را كه می‌‌‌‌‌‌خورم باعث لغزش ایمانداری شود، تا ابد گوشت نخواهم خورد مبادا باعث لغزش او بشوم.
