Acts 17

Mutta kuin he Amphipolin ja Apollonian lävitse vaeltaneet olivat, tulivat he Tessalonikaan, jossa Juudalaisten synagoga oli.

Now when they had passed through Amphipolis and Apollonia, they came to Thessalonica, where was a synagogue of the Jews:

Ja Paavali, tapansa jälkeen, meni sisälle heidän tykönsä ja jutteli heille kolme lepopäivää Raamatuista,

And Paul, as his manner was, went in unto them, and three sabbath days reasoned with them out of the scriptures,

Selitti ne ja todisti, että Kristuksen tuli kärsiä ja nousta ylös kuolleista, ja että tämä Jesus, josta minä (sanoi hän,) teille ilmoitan, on Kristus.

Opening and alleging, that Christ must needs have suffered, and risen again from the dead; and that this Jesus, whom I preach unto you, is Christ.

Ja muutamat suostuivat heihin, antain itsensä Paavalin ja Silaan seuraan, niin myös suuri joukko jumalisia Grekiläisiä ja ei vähä ylimmäisiä vaimoja.

And some of them believed, and consorted with Paul and Silas; and of the devout Greeks a great multitude, and of the chief women not a few.

Mutta epäuskoiset Juudalaiset kadehtivat sitä ja saattivat tykönsä muutamia pahanilkisiä miehiä joutoväestä, ja kokoontuivat yhteen joukkoon, nostivat kapinan kaupungissa ja tunkeutuivat Jasonin huoneeseen, ja etsivät heitä viedäksensä kansan eteen.

But the Jews which believed not, moved with envy, took unto them certain lewd fellows of the baser sort, and gathered a company, and set all the city on an uproar, and assaulted the house of Jason, and sought to bring them out to the people.

Ja ettei he heitä löytäneet, riepoittivat he Jasonin ja muutamia veljiä kaupungin päämiesten eteen ja huusivat: nämät koko maan piirin vietteliät ovat myös täällä,

And when they found them not, they drew Jason and certain brethren unto the rulers of the city, crying, These that have turned the world upside down are come hither also;

Jotka Jason otti vastaan; ja nämät kaikki tekevät keisarin käskyä vastaan, sanoen toisen kuninkaan olevan, nimittäin Jesuksen.

Whom Jason hath received: and these all do contrary to the decrees of Cæsar, saying that there is another king, one Jesus.

Ja he kehoittivat kansan ja kaupungin päämiehet, jotka näitä kuultelivat.

And they troubled the people and the rulers of the city, when they heard these things.

Ja kuin he Jasonilta ja niiltä muilta olivat puhdistuksen ottaneet, päästivät he heidät.

And when they had taken security of Jason, and of the other, they let them go.

Mutta veljet lähettivät kohta yöllä Paavalin ja Silaan Bereaan. Kuin he sinne tulivat, menivät he Juudalaisten synagogaan.

And the brethren immediately sent away Paul and Silas by night unto Berea: who coming thither went into the synagogue of the Jews.

Sillä he olivat jalompaa sukua kuin ne, jotka Tessalonikassa olivat, ja ottivat juuri mielellänsä sanan vastaan ja tutkivat joka päivä Raamatuita, jos ne niin olisivat.

These were more noble than those in Thessalonica, in that they received the word with all readiness of mind, and searched the scriptures daily, whether those things were so.

Niin monta heistä uskoivat, niin myös kunniallisista Grekiläisvaimoista ja miehistä ei harvat.

Therefore many of them believed; also of honourable women which were Greeks, and of men, not a few.

Kuin Juudalaiset Tessalonikassa ymmärsivät, että Jumalan sana oli myös Bereassa Paavalilta ilmoitettu, tulivat he sinnekin ja kehoittivat kansan.

But when the Jews of Thessalonica had knowledge that the word of God was preached of Paul at Berea, they came thither also, and stirred up the people.

Mutta veljet lähettivät kohta Paavalin ulos menemään hamaan mereen asti; vaan Silas ja Timoteus jäivät sinne.

And then immediately the brethren sent away Paul to go as it were to the sea: but Silas and Timotheus abode there still.

Ja ne, jotka Paavalia saattivat, johdattivat hänen hamaan Ateniin. Ja kuin he saivat käskyn Silaan ja Timoteuksen tykö, että he rientäisivät hänen tykönsä, läksivät he matkaan.

And they that conducted Paul brought him unto Athens: and receiving a commandment unto Silas and Timotheus for to come to him with all speed, they departed.

Ja kuin Paavali odotti heitä Atenissa, syttyi hänen henkensä, että hän näki kaupungin aivan epäjumaliseksi.

Now while Paul waited for them at Athens, his spirit was stirred in him, when he saw the city wholly given to idolatry.

Niin hän puheli Juudalaisten ja muiden jumalisten kanssa synagogassa, niin myös turulla joka päivä niiden kanssa, jotka tulivat hänen tykönsä.

Therefore disputed he in the synagogue with the Jews, and with the devout persons, and in the market daily with them that met with him.

Ja muutamat Epikurilaiset ja Stoalaiset philosophit riitelivät hänen kanssansa, ja muutamat sanoivat: mitä tämä lipilaari tahtoo sanoa? Mutta muut sanoivat: hän näkyy tahtovan outoja jumalia ilmoittaa: että hän saarnasi heille evankeliumia Jesuksesta ja ylösnousemisen kuolleista.

Then certain philosophers of the Epicureans, and of the Stoicks, encountered him. And some said, What will this babbler say? other some, He seemeth to be a setter forth of strange gods: because he preached unto them Jesus, and the resurrection.

Ja he ottivat hänen ja veivät oikeuden paikkaan ja sanoivat: emmekö me mahda tietää, mikä uusi opetus tämä on, josta sinä puhut?

And they took him, and brought him unto Areopagus, saying, May we know what this new doctrine, whereof thou speakest, is?

Sillä sinä tuotat jotakin outoa meidän korvillemme. Sentähden tahdomme me tietää, mitä ne ovat.

For thou bringest certain strange things to our ears: we would know therefore what these things mean.

(Mutta kaikki Atenalaiset ja muukalaiset vieraat ei olleet mihinkään muuhun soveliaat kuin jotakin uutta sanomaan ja kuultelemaan.)

(For all the Athenians and strangers which were there spent their time in nothing else, but either to tell, or to hear some new thing.)

Niin Paavali seisoi keskellä oikeuspaikkaa, ja sanoi: Atenan miehet! minä näen teidät kaikissa kappaleissa epäjumalisiksi;

Then Paul stood in the midst of Mars' hill, and said, Ye men of Athens, I perceive that in all things ye are too superstitious.

Sillä minä kävelin tässä ympäri ja katselin teidän jumalanpalvelustanne, ja löysin alttarin, jossa oli kirjoitettu: tuntemattomalle Jumalalle. Jota te siis tietämättä palvelette, sen minä teille ilmoitan.

For as I passed by, and beheld your devotions, I found an altar with this inscription, TO THE UNKNOWN GOD. Whom therefore ye ignorantly worship, him declare I unto you.

Jumala, joka maailman teki ja kaikki mitä siinä on, joka on taivaan ja maan Herra, ei hän asu käsillä rakennetuissa templeissä,

God that made the world and all things therein, seeing that he is Lord of heaven and earth, dwelleth not in temples made with hands;

Eikä häntä ihmisten käsillä palvella, niinkuin hän jotakin tarvitsis; sillä hän itse antaa jokaiselle elämän ja hengen sekä kaikki.

Neither is worshipped with men's hands, as though he needed any thing, seeing he giveth to all life, and breath, and all things;

Ja hän on tehnyt kaiken ihmisten sukukunnan yhdestä verestä kaiken maan piirin päälle asumaan, ja määräsi aivotut ajat ja heidän asumisensa rajat:

And hath made of one blood all nations of men for to dwell on all the face of the earth, and hath determined the times before appointed, and the bounds of their habitation;

Että heidän piti Jumalaa etsimän, jos he hänen taitaisivat tuta ja löytää; vaikka ei hän tosin ole kaukana yhdestäkään meistä.

That they should seek the Lord, if haply they might feel after him, and find him, though he be not far from every one of us:

Sillä hänessä me elämme, ja liikumme, ja olemme: niinkuin muutamat teidän runosepistänne sanoneet ovat: sillä me olemme myös hänen sukunsa.

For in him we live, and move, and have our being; as certain also of your own poets have said, For we are also his offspring.

Koska me siis Jumalan sukua olemme, niin ei meidän pidä luuleman, että Jumala on kullan eli hopian eli kiven kaltaisen kuvan kaltainen, joka ihmisen taidon ja ajatuksen jälkeen on kaivettu.

Forasmuch then as we are the offspring of God, we ought not to think that the Godhead is like unto gold, or silver, or stone, graven by art and man's device.

Nämät eksytyksen ajat on tosin Jumala sallinut, ja ilmoittaa nyt kaikille ihmisille joka paikassa, että he parannuksen tekisivät.

And the times of this ignorance God winked at; but now commandeth all men every where to repent:

Sillä hän on päivän säätänyt, jona hän on maan piirin tuomitseva vanhurskaudessa, sen miehen kautta, jonka hän on säätänyt, ja jokaiselle ilmoittaa uskon, siinä että hän hänen kuolleista herätti.

Because he hath appointed a day, in the which he will judge the world in righteousness by that man whom he hath ordained; whereof he hath given assurance unto all men, in that he hath raised him from the dead.

Kuin he kuulivat kuolleiden ylösnousemisen, niin muutamat nauroivat sitä, vaan toiset sanoivat: me tahdomme sinua siitä vielä kuunnella.

And when they heard of the resurrection of the dead, some mocked: and others said, We will hear thee again of this matter.

Ja niin Paavali läksi heidän keskeltänsä.

So Paul departed from among them.

Ja muutamat miehet riippuivat hänessä ja uskoivat: joidenka seassa myös Dionysius oli, yksi raadista, ja vaimo, nimeltä Damaris, ja muita heidän kanssansa.

Howbeit certain men clave unto him, and believed: among the which was Dionysius the Areopagite, and a woman named Damaris, and others with them.
