Titus 1

این نامه از طرف پولس، بندهٔ خدا و رسول عیسی مسیح است. من مأموریت یافتم كه ایمان برگزیدگان خدا را تقویت كنم و حقیقتی را كه با خداشناسی سازگار است، بیان نمایم.

Paul, a servant of God, and an apostle of Jesus Christ, according to the faith of God's elect, and the acknowledging of the truth which is after godliness;

این حقیقت بر اساس امید به حیات جاودانی است. خدا كه هرگز دروغ نمی‌گوید، در ازل وعدهٔ آن حیات را به ما داد

In hope of eternal life, which God, that cannot lie, promised before the world began;

و در زمان معیّن، آن وعده در پیامی که اعلام آن به دستور نجات‌دهندهٔ ما خدا، به من سپرده شد، آشكار شد.

But hath in due times manifested his word through preaching, which is committed unto me according to the commandment of God our Saviour;

به تیطُس فرزند حقیقی‏‌ام كه هردوی ما در یک ایمان مشتركیم، خدای پدر و مسیح عیسی نجات‌دهندهٔ ما، به تو فیض و آرامش عطا فرماید.

To Titus, mine own son after the common faith: Grace, mercy, and peace, from God the Father and the Lord Jesus Christ our Saviour.

تو را برای این در جزیره كریت گذاشتم تا كارهای عقب افتاده را سر و سامان دهی و چنانکه شخصاً به تو دستور دادم، رهبرانی برای كلیساها در هر شهر بگماری.

For this cause left I thee in Crete, that thou shouldest set in order the things that are wanting, and ordain elders in every city, as I had appointed thee:

رهبران باید اشخاصی بی‌عیب و بی‌آلایش و صاحب یک زن و دارای فرزندان با ایمانی باشند كه نتوان آنها را به هرزگی و سركشی متّهم ساخت.

If any be blameless, the husband of one wife, having faithful children not accused of riot or unruly.

زیرا سرپرست كلیسا چون مسئول كار خداست باید بی‌عیب باشد، نه خودخواه، نه تندخو، نه مست باده، نه جنگجو و نه پول‌پرست.

For a bishop must be blameless, as the steward of God; not selfwilled, not soon angry, not given to wine, no striker, not given to filthy lucre;

بلكه باید مهمان‌‌نواز، نیكخواه، روشن‌بین، عادل، پاک و خویشتن‌دار باشد.

But a lover of hospitality, a lover of good men, sober, just, holy, temperate;

باید به پیامی كه قابل اعتماد و با تعالیم صحیح سازگار است، محكم بچسبد تا بتواند اطرافیان را با تعلیمی درست تشویق كرده و مخالفان را مُجاب سازد.

Holding fast the faithful word as he hath been taught, that he may be able by sound doctrine both to exhort and to convince the gainsayers.

زیرا افراد سركش، یاوه‌سرا و گمراه‌كننده بسیارند. این افراد مخصوصاً در بین تازه‌‌ ایمانان یهودی نژاد پیدا می‌شوند.

For there are many unruly and vain talkers and deceivers, specially they of the circumcision:

لازم است كه جلوی دهان آنها را گرفت، زیرا به‌خاطر تحصیل سودهای ننگ‌آور، با تعلیم چیزهایی که نباید آنها را تعلیم داد، خانواده‌‌ها را تماماً برمی‌‌اندازند.

Whose mouths must be stopped, who subvert whole houses, teaching things which they ought not, for filthy lucre's sake.

یكی از انبیای كریتی كه یک نفر از خود آنهاست گفت: «اهالی كریت همیشه دروغگو و حیوانهای پلید، پرخور و تنبلی هستند.»

One of themselves, even a prophet of their own, said, The Cretians are alway liars, evil beasts, slow bellies.

این درست است. به این دلیل آنها را سخت سرزنش كن تا در ایمان سالم باشند

This witness is true. Wherefore rebuke them sharply, that they may be sound in the faith;

و به افسانه‌های یهود و احكام مردمانی كه حقیقت را رد کرده‌اند، گوش ندهند.

Not giving heed to Jewish fables, and commandments of men, that turn from the truth.

برای پاكان همه‌چیز پاک است، امّا برای کسانی‌که آلوده و بی‌ایمان هستند، هیچ چیز پاک نیست. زیرا هم افكارشان و هم وجدانشان آلوده است.

Unto the pure all things are pure: but unto them that are defiled and unbelieving is nothing pure; but even their mind and conscience is defiled.

ادّعا دارند كه خدا را می‌شناسند، امّا کارهایشان این ادّعا را تكذیب می‌کند. آنها نفرت‌انگیز و نافرمانند و برای انجام كار نیک کاملاً بی‌فایده هستند.

They profess that they know God; but in works they deny him, being abominable, and disobedient, and unto every good work reprobate.
