Job 2

بار دیگر فرشتگان به حضور خداوند آمدند و شیطان هم همراه آنها بود.

Again there was a day when the sons of God came to present themselves before the LORD, and Satan came also among them to present himself before the LORD.

خداوند از شیطان پرسید: «تو از کجا آمده‌ای؟» شیطان جواب داد: «به دور زمین می‌گشتم و سیاحت می‌کردم.»

And the LORD said unto Satan, From whence comest thou? And Satan answered the LORD, and said, From going to and fro in the earth, and from walking up and down in it.

خداوند پرسید: «آیا بندهٔ من ایّوب را دیدی؟ در تمام روی زمین کسی مانند او پیدا نمی‌شود. او شخصی درستکار و بی‌عیب است. از من می‌ترسد و هیچ خطایی از او سر نمی‌زند. با وجود اینکه مرا وادار ساختی تا به تو اجازه دهم، بدون سبب به او آسیب برسانی، او هنوز هم در ایمان خود نسبت به من وفادار مانده است.»

And the LORD said unto Satan, Hast thou considered my servant Job, that there is none like him in the earth, a perfect and an upright man, one that feareth God, and escheweth evil? and still he holdeth fast his integrity, although thou movedst me against him, to destroy him without cause.

شیطان در جواب خداوند گفت: «انسان برای اینکه زنده بماند حاضر است از همه‌چیز خود دست بکشد.

And Satan answered the LORD, and said, Skin for skin, yea, all that a man hath will he give for his life.

به بدن او آسیب برسان و خواهی دید که آشکارا به تو کفر خواهد گفت.»

But put forth thine hand now, and touch his bone and his flesh, and he will curse thee to thy face.

خداوند به شیطان فرمود: «بسیار خوب، او در اختیار توست، امّا او را نکش.»

And the LORD said unto Satan, Behold, he is in thine hand; but save his life.

پس شیطان از حضور خداوند بیرون رفت و ایّوب را از سر تا پا به دُمَلهای دردناک مبتلا کرد.

So went Satan forth from the presence of the LORD, and smote Job with sore boils from the sole of his foot unto his crown.

ایّوب در میان خاکستر نشست و با یک تکه سفال، بدن خود را می‌خارید.

And he took him a potsherd to scrape himself withal; and he sat down among the ashes.

زنش به او گفت: «تو هنوز هم نسبت به خدا وفادار هستی؟ خدا را لعنت کن و بمیر.»

Then said his wife unto him, Dost thou still retain thine integrity? curse God, and die.

امّا او در جواب گفت: «تو همچون یک زن ابله حرف می‌زنی. آیا تو می‌خواهی که ما چیزهای خوبِ خدا را قبول کنیم و چیزهای بد را نپذیریم؟» با همهٔ این مصیبتها که بر سر ایّوب آمد، او برضد خدا چیزی نگفت.

But he said unto her, Thou speakest as one of the foolish women speaketh. What? shall we receive good at the hand of God, and shall we not receive evil? In all this did not Job sin with his lips.

وقتی سه نفر از دوستان ایّوب به نامهای الیفاز تیمانی، بلدد شوحی و سوفر نعماتی، آگاه شدند که چه بلاهایی بر سر ایّوب آمده است، تصمیم گرفتند که باهم برای تسلّی و عیادت نزد او بروند.

Now when Job's three friends heard of all this evil that was come upon him, they came every one from his own place; Eliphaz the Temanite, and Bildad the Shuhite, and Zophar the Naamathite: for they had made an appointment together to come to mourn with him and to comfort him.

وقتی آنها ایّوب را از دور دیدند، او را نشناختند. بعد با صدای بلند گریستند، لباس خود را دریدند و خاک بر سر خود پاشیدند.

And when they lifted up their eyes afar off, and knew him not, they lifted up their voice, and wept; and they rent every one his mantle, and sprinkled dust upon their heads toward heaven.

آنها هفت شبانه‌روز در کنار او بر زمین نشستند و هیچ‌کدام با او حرفی نزدند، زیرا دیدند که درد او بسیار شدید است.

So they sat down with him upon the ground seven days and seven nights, and none spake a word unto him: for they saw that his grief was very great.
