پھر اسرائیلی دوبارہ وہ کچھ کرنے لگے جو رب کو بُرا لگا، اور اُس نے اُنہیں سات سال تک مِدیانیوں کے حوالے کر دیا۔

And the children of Israel did evil in the sight of the LORD: and the LORD delivered them into the hand of Midian seven years.

مِدیانیوں کا دباؤ اِتنا زیادہ بڑھ گیا کہ اسرائیلیوں نے اُن سے پناہ لینے کے لئے پہاڑی علاقے میں شگاف، غار اور گڑھیاں بنا لیں۔

And the hand of Midian prevailed against Israel: and because of the Midianites the children of Israel made them the dens which are in the mountains, and caves, and strong holds.

کیونکہ جب بھی وہ اپنی فصلیں لگاتے تو مِدیانی، عمالیقی اور مشرق کے دیگر فوجی اُن پر حملہ کر کے

And so it was, when Israel had sown, that the Midianites came up, and the Amalekites, and the children of the east, even they came up against them;

ملک کو گھیر لیتے اور فصلوں کو غزہ شہر تک تباہ کرتے۔ وہ کھانے والی کوئی بھی چیز نہیں چھوڑتے تھے، نہ کوئی بھیڑ، نہ کوئی بَیل، اور نہ کوئی گدھا۔

And they encamped against them, and destroyed the increase of the earth, till thou come unto Gaza, and left no sustenance for Israel, neither sheep, nor ox, nor ass.

اور جب وہ اپنے مویشیوں اور خیموں کے ساتھ پہنچتے تو ٹڈیوں کے دَلوں کی مانند تھے۔ اِتنے مرد اور اونٹ تھے کہ اُن کو گنا نہیں جا سکتا تھا۔ یوں وہ ملک پر چڑھ آتے تھے تاکہ اُسے تباہ کریں۔

For they came up with their cattle and their tents, and they came as grasshoppers for multitude; for both they and their camels were without number: and they entered into the land to destroy it.

اسرائیلی مِدیان کے سبب سے اِتنے پست حال ہوئے کہ آخرکار مدد کے لئے رب کو پکارنے لگے۔

And Israel was greatly impoverished because of the Midianites; and the children of Israel cried unto the LORD.

تب اُس نے اُن میں ایک نبی بھیج دیا جس نے کہا، ”رب اسرائیل کا خدا فرماتا ہے کہ مَیں ہی تمہیں مصر کی غلامی سے نکال لایا۔

And it came to pass, when the children of Israel cried unto the LORD because of the Midianites,

تب اُس نے اُن میں ایک نبی بھیج دیا جس نے کہا، ”رب اسرائیل کا خدا فرماتا ہے کہ مَیں ہی تمہیں مصر کی غلامی سے نکال لایا۔

That the LORD sent a prophet unto the children of Israel, which said unto them, Thus saith the LORD God of Israel, I brought you up from Egypt, and brought you forth out of the house of bondage;

مَیں نے تمہیں مصر کے ہاتھ سے اور اُن تمام ظالموں کے ہاتھ سے بچا لیا جو تمہیں دبا رہے تھے۔ مَیں اُنہیں تمہارے آگے آگے نکالتا گیا اور اُن کی زمین تمہیں دے دی۔

And I delivered you out of the hand of the Egyptians, and out of the hand of all that oppressed you, and drave them out from before you, and gave you their land;

اُس وقت مَیں نے تمہیں بتایا، ’مَیں رب تمہارا خدا ہوں۔ جن اموریوں کے ملک میں تم رہ رہے ہو اُن کے دیوتاؤں کا خوف مت ماننا۔‘ لیکن تم نے میری نہ سنی۔“

And I said unto you, I am the LORD your God; fear not the gods of the Amorites, in whose land ye dwell: but ye have not obeyed my voice.

ایک دن رب کا فرشتہ آیا اور عُفرہ میں بلوط کے ایک درخت کے سائے میں بیٹھ گیا۔ یہ درخت ابی عزر کے خاندان کے ایک آدمی کا تھا جس کا نام یوآس تھا۔ وہاں انگور کا رس نکالنے کا حوض تھا، اور اُس میں یوآس کا بیٹا جدعون چھپ کر گندم جھاڑ رہا تھا، حوض میں اِس لئے کہ گندم مِدیانیوں سے محفوظ رہے۔

And there came an angel of the LORD, and sat under an oak which was in Ophrah, that pertained unto Joash the Abi–ezrite: and his son Gideon threshed wheat by the winepress, to hide it from the Midianites.

رب کا فرشتہ جدعون پر ظاہر ہوا اور کہا، ”اے زبردست سورمے، رب تیرے ساتھ ہے!“

And the angel of the LORD appeared unto him, and said unto him, The LORD is with thee, thou mighty man of valour.

جدعون نے جواب دیا، ”نہیں جناب، اگر رب ہمارے ساتھ ہو تو یہ سب کچھ ہمارے ساتھ کیوں ہو رہا ہے؟ اُس کے وہ تمام معجزے آج کہاں نظر آتے ہیں جن کے بارے میں ہمارے باپ دادا ہمیں بتاتے رہے ہیں؟ کیا وہ نہیں کہتے تھے کہ رب ہمیں مصر سے نکال لایا؟ نہیں، جناب۔ اب ایسا نہیں ہے۔ اب رب نے ہمیں ترک کر کے مِدیان کے حوالے کر دیا ہے۔“

And Gideon said unto him, Oh my Lord, if the LORD be with us, why then is all this befallen us? and where be all his miracles which our fathers told us of, saying, Did not the LORD bring us up from Egypt? but now the LORD hath forsaken us, and delivered us into the hands of the Midianites.

رب نے اُس کی طرف مُڑ کر کہا، ”اپنی اِس طاقت میں جا اور اسرائیل کو مِدیان کے ہاتھ سے بچا۔ مَیں ہی تجھے بھیج رہا ہوں۔“

And the LORD looked upon him, and said, Go in this thy might, and thou shalt save Israel from the hand of the Midianites: have not I sent thee?

لیکن جدعون نے اعتراض کیا، ”اے رب، مَیں اسرائیل کو کس طرح بچاؤں؟ میرا خاندان منسّی کے قبیلے کا سب سے کمزور خاندان ہے، اور مَیں اپنے باپ کے گھر میں سب سے چھوٹا ہوں۔“

And he said unto him, Oh my Lord, wherewith shall I save Israel? behold, my family is poor in Manasseh, and I am the least in my father's house.

رب نے جواب دیا، ”مَیں تیرے ساتھ ہوں گا، اور تُو مِدیانیوں کو یوں مارے گا جیسے ایک ہی آدمی کو۔“

And the LORD said unto him, Surely I will be with thee, and thou shalt smite the Midianites as one man.

تب جدعون نے کہا، ”اگر مجھ پر تیرے کرم کی نظر ہو تو مجھے کوئی الٰہی نشان دکھا تاکہ ثابت ہو جائے کہ واقعی رب ہی میرے ساتھ بات کر رہا ہے۔

And he said unto him, If now I have found grace in thy sight, then shew me a sign that thou talkest with me.

مَیں ابھی جا کر قربانی تیار کرتا ہوں اور پھر واپس آ کر اُسے تجھے پیش کروں گا۔ اُس وقت تک روانہ نہ ہو جانا۔“ رب نے کہا، ”ٹھیک ہے، مَیں تیری واپسی کا انتظار کر کے ہی جاؤں گا۔“

Depart not hence, I pray thee, until I come unto thee, and bring forth my present, and set it before thee. And he said, I will tarry until thou come again.

جدعون چلا گیا۔ اُس نے بکری کا بچہ ذبح کر کے تیار کیا اور پورے 16 کلو گرام میدے سے بےخمیری روٹی بنائی۔ پھر گوشت کو ٹوکری میں رکھ کر اور اُس کا شوربہ الگ برتن میں ڈال کر وہ سب کچھ رب کے فرشتے کے پاس لایا اور اُسے بلوط کے سائے میں پیش کیا۔

And Gideon went in, and made ready a kid, and unleavened cakes of an ephah of flour: the flesh he put in a basket, and he put the broth in a pot, and brought it out unto him under the oak, and presented it.

رب کے فرشتے نے کہا، ”گوشت اور بےخمیری روٹی کو لے کر اِس پتھر پر رکھ دے، پھر شوربہ اُس پر اُنڈیل دے۔“ جدعون نے ایسا ہی کیا۔

And the angel of God said unto him, Take the flesh and the unleavened cakes, and lay them upon this rock, and pour out the broth. And he did so.

رب کے فرشتے کے ہاتھ میں لاٹھی تھی۔ اب اُس نے لاٹھی کے سرے سے گوشت اور بےخمیری روٹی کو چھو دیا۔ اچانک پتھر سے آگ بھڑک اُٹھی اور خوراک بھسم ہو گئی۔ ساتھ ساتھ رب کا فرشتہ اوجھل ہو گیا۔

Then the angel of the LORD put forth the end of the staff that was in his hand, and touched the flesh and the unleavened cakes; and there rose up fire out of the rock, and consumed the flesh and the unleavened cakes. Then the angel of the LORD departed out of his sight.

پھر جدعون کو یقین آیا کہ یہ واقعی رب کا فرشتہ تھا، اور وہ بول اُٹھا، ”ہائے رب قادرِ مطلق! مجھ پر افسوس، کیونکہ مَیں نے رب کے فرشتے کو رُوبرُو دیکھا ہے۔“

And when Gideon perceived that he was an angel of the LORD, Gideon said, Alas, O Lord GOD! for because I have seen an angel of the LORD face to face.

لیکن رب اُس سے ہم کلام ہوا اور کہا، ”تیری سلامتی ہو۔ مت ڈر، تُو نہیں مرے گا۔“

And the LORD said unto him, Peace be unto thee; fear not: thou shalt not die.

وہیں جدعون نے رب کے لئے قربان گاہ بنائی اور اُس کا نام ’رب سلامت ہے‘ رکھا۔ یہ آج تک ابی عزر کے خاندان کے شہر عُفرہ میں موجود ہے۔

Then Gideon built an altar there unto the LORD, and called it Jehovah–shalom: unto this day it is yet in Ophrah of the Abi–ezrites.

اُسی رات رب جدعون سے ہم کلام ہوا، ”اپنے باپ کے بَیلوں میں سے دوسرے بَیل کو جو سات سال کا ہے چن لے۔ پھر اپنے باپ کی وہ قربان گاہ گرا دے جس پر بعل دیوتا کو قربانیاں چڑھائی جاتی ہیں، اور یسیرت دیوی کا وہ کھمبا کاٹ ڈال جو ساتھ کھڑا ہے۔

And it came to pass the same night, that the LORD said unto him, Take thy father's young bullock, even the second bullock of seven years old, and throw down the altar of Baal that thy father hath, and cut down the grove that is by it:

اِس کے بعد اُسی پہاڑی قلعے کی چوٹی پر رب اپنے خدا کے لئے صحیح قربان گاہ بنا دے۔ یسیرت کے کھمبے کی کٹی ہوئی لکڑی اور بَیل کو اُس پر رکھ کر مجھے بھسم ہونے والی قربانی پیش کر۔“

And build an altar unto the LORD thy God upon the top of this rock, in the ordered place, and take the second bullock, and offer a burnt sacrifice with the wood of the grove which thou shalt cut down.

چنانچہ جدعون نے اپنے دس نوکروں کو ساتھ لے کر وہ کچھ کیا جس کا حکم رب نے اُسے دیا تھا۔ لیکن وہ اپنے خاندان اور شہر کے لوگوں سے ڈرتا تھا، اِس لئے اُس نے یہ کام دن کے بجائے رات کے وقت کیا۔

Then Gideon took ten men of his servants, and did as the LORD had said unto him: and so it was, because he feared his father's household, and the men of the city, that he could not do it by day, that he did it by night.

صبح کے وقت جب شہر کے لوگ اُٹھے تو دیکھا کہ بعل کی قربان گاہ ڈھا دی گئی ہے اور یسیرت دیوی کا ساتھ والا کھمبا کاٹ دیا گیا ہے۔ اِن کی جگہ ایک نئی قربان گاہ بنائی گئی ہے جس پر بَیل کو چڑھایا گیا ہے۔

And when the men of the city arose early in the morning, behold, the altar of Baal was cast down, and the grove was cut down that was by it, and the second bullock was offered upon the altar that was built.

اُنہوں نے ایک دوسرے سے پوچھا، ”کس نے یہ کیا؟“ جب وہ اِس بات کی تفتیش کرنے لگے تو کسی نے اُنہیں بتایا کہ جدعون بن یوآس نے یہ سب کچھ کیا ہے۔

And they said one to another, Who hath done this thing? And when they enquired and asked, they said, Gideon the son of Joash hath done this thing.

تب وہ یوآس کے گھر گئے اور تقاضا کیا، ”اپنے بیٹے کو گھر سے نکال لائیں۔ لازم ہے کہ وہ مر جائے، کیونکہ اُس نے بعل کی قربان گاہ کو گرا کر ساتھ والا یسیرت دیوی کا کھمبا بھی کاٹ ڈالا ہے۔“

Then the men of the city said unto Joash, Bring out thy son, that he may die: because he hath cast down the altar of Baal, and because he hath cut down the grove that was by it.

لیکن یوآس نے اُن سے جو اُس کے سامنے کھڑے تھے کہا، ”کیا آپ بعل کے دفاع میں لڑنا چاہتے ہیں؟ جو بھی بعل کے لئے لڑے گا اُسے کل صبح تک مار دیا جائے گا۔ اگر بعل واقعی خدا ہے تو وہ خود اپنے دفاع میں لڑے جب کوئی اُس کی قربان گاہ کو ڈھا دے۔“

And Joash said unto all that stood against him, Will ye plead for Baal? will ye save him? he that will plead for him, let him be put to death whilst it is yet morning: if he be a god, let him plead for himself, because one hath cast down his altar.

چونکہ جدعون نے بعل کی قربان گاہ گرا دی تھی اِس لئے اُس کا نام یرُبعل یعنی ’بعل اُس سے لڑے‘ پڑ گیا۔

Therefore on that day he called him Jerubbaal, saying, Let Baal plead against him, because he hath thrown down his altar.

کچھ دیر کے بعد تمام مِدیانی، عمالیقی اور دوسری مشرقی قومیں جمع ہوئیں اور دریائے یردن کو پار کر کے اپنے ڈیرے میدانِ یزرعیل میں لگائے۔

Then all the Midianites and the Amalekites and the children of the east were gathered together, and went over, and pitched in the valley of Jezreel.

پھر رب کا روح جدعون پر نازل ہوا۔ اُس نے نرسنگا پھونک کر ابی عزر کے خاندان کے مردوں کو اپنے پیچھے ہو لینے کے لئے بُلایا۔

But the Spirit of the LORD came upon Gideon, and he blew a trumpet; and Abi–ezer was gathered after him.

ساتھ ساتھ اُس نے اپنے قاصدوں کو منسّی کے قبیلے اور آشر، زبولون اور نفتالی کے قبیلوں کے پاس بھی بھیج دیا۔ تب وہ بھی آئے اور جدعون کے مردوں کے ساتھ مل کر اُس کے پیچھے ہو لئے۔

And he sent messengers throughout all Manasseh; who also was gathered after him: and he sent messengers unto Asher, and unto Zebulun, and unto Naphtali; and they came up to meet them.

جدعون نے اللہ سے دعا کی، ”اگر تُو واقعی اسرائیل کو اپنے وعدے کے مطابق میرے ذریعے بچانا چاہتا ہے

And Gideon said unto God, If thou wilt save Israel by mine hand, as thou hast said,

تو مجھے یقین دلا۔ مَیں رات کو تازہ کتری ہوئی اُون گندم گاہنے کے فرش پر رکھ دوں گا۔ کل صبح اگر صرف اُون پر اوس پڑی ہو اور ارد گرد کا سارا فرش خشک ہو تو مَیں جان لوں گا کہ واقعی تُو اپنے وعدے کے مطابق اسرائیل کو میرے ذریعے بچائے گا۔“

Behold, I will put a fleece of wool in the floor; and if the dew be on the fleece only, and it be dry upon all the earth beside, then shall I know that thou wilt save Israel by mine hand, as thou hast said.

وہی کچھ ہوا جس کی درخواست جدعون نے کی تھی۔ اگلے دن جب وہ صبح سویرے اُٹھا تو اُون اوس سے تر تھی۔ جب اُس نے اُسے نچوڑا تو اِتنا پانی تھا کہ برتن بھر گیا۔

And it was so: for he rose up early on the morrow, and thrust the fleece together, and wringed the dew out of the fleece, a bowl full of water.

پھر جدعون نے اللہ سے کہا، ”مجھ سے غصے نہ ہو جانا اگر مَیں تجھ سے ایک بار پھر درخواست کروں۔ مجھے ایک آخری دفعہ اُون کے ذریعے تیری مرضی جانچنے کی اجازت دے۔ اِس دفعہ اُون خشک رہے اور ارد گرد کے سارے فرش پر اوس پڑی ہو۔“

And Gideon said unto God, Let not thine anger be hot against me, and I will speak but this once: let me prove, I pray thee, but this once with the fleece; let it now be dry only upon the fleece, and upon all the ground let there be dew.

اُس رات اللہ نے ایسا ہی کیا۔ صرف اُون خشک رہی جبکہ ارد گرد کے سارے فرش پر اوس پڑی تھی۔

And God did so that night: for it was dry upon the fleece only, and there was dew on all the ground.
