I Samuel 4

Og Samuels ord kom til hele Israel, og Israel drog ut for å stride mot filistrene; de leiret sig ved Eben-Eser, og filistrene leiret sig i Afek.

And the word of Samuel came to all Israel. Now Israel went out against the Philistines to battle, and pitched beside Eben–ezer: and the Philistines pitched in Aphek.

Og filistrene stilte sig i fylking mot Israel, og striden bredte sig ut, og Israel blev slått av filistrene; og filistrene felte på slagmarken omkring fire tusen mann.

And the Philistines put themselves in array against Israel: and when they joined battle, Israel was smitten before the Philistines: and they slew of the army in the field about four thousand men.

Og da folket kom til leiren, sa Israels eldste: Hvorfor har Herren idag latt oss bli slått av filistrene? La oss hente Herrens pakts-ark til oss fra Silo, så den kan komme hit iblandt oss og frelse oss av våre fienders hånd.

And when the people were come into the camp, the elders of Israel said, Wherefore hath the LORD smitten us to day before the Philistines? Let us fetch the ark of the covenant of the LORD out of Shiloh unto us, that, when it cometh among us, it may save us out of the hand of our enemies.

Så sendte folket bud til Silo, og de hentet derfra Herrens, hærskarenes Guds pakts-ark, hans som troner på kjerubene; og begge Elis sønner, Hofni og Pinehas, var med og fulgte Guds pakts-ark.

So the people sent to Shiloh, that they might bring from thence the ark of the covenant of the LORD of hosts, which dwelleth between the cherubims: and the two sons of Eli, Hophni and Phinehas, were there with the ark of the covenant of God.

Med det samme Herrens pakts-ark kom til leiren, satte hele Israel i et stort fryderop, så jorden rystet.

And when the ark of the covenant of the LORD came into the camp, all Israel shouted with a great shout, so that the earth rang again.

Og da filistrene hørte lyden av fryderopet, sa de: Hvad er dette for et stort fryderop i hebreernes leir? Og de fikk vite at Herrens ark var kommet til leiren.

And when the Philistines heard the noise of the shout, they said, What meaneth the noise of this great shout in the camp of the Hebrews? And they understood that the ark of the LORD was come into the camp.

Da blev filistrene redde; for de tenkte: Gud er kommet til leiren. Og de sa: Ve oss! Sådant har ikke hendt før.

And the Philistines were afraid, for they said, God is come into the camp. And they said, Woe unto us! for there hath not been such a thing heretofore.

Ve oss! Hvem skal fri oss av disse veldige guders hånd? Dette er de guder som slo Egypten med alle slags plager i ørkenen.

Woe unto us! who shall deliver us out of the hand of these mighty Gods? these are the Gods that smote the Egyptians with all the plagues in the wilderness.

Ta mot til eder og vær menn, I filistrer, forat I ikke skal komme til å træle for hebreerne, likesom de har trælet for eder! Vær menn og strid!

Be strong, and quit yourselves like men, O ye Philistines, that ye be not servants unto the Hebrews, as they have been to you: quit yourselves like men, and fight.

Da gikk filistrene til strid, og Israel blev slått, og de flyktet hver til sitt telt, og der blev et meget stort mannefall - det falt tretti tusen mann av Israels fotfolk.

And the Philistines fought, and Israel was smitten, and they fled every man into his tent: and there was a very great slaughter; for there fell of Israel thirty thousand footmen.

Og Guds ark blev tatt, og begge Elis sønner, Hofni og Pinehas, mistet livet.

And the ark of God was taken; and the two sons of Eli, Hophni and Phinehas, were slain.

Da løp en mann av Benjamin fra slagmarken og kom samme dag til Silo med sønderrevne klær og med jord på sitt hode.

And there ran a man of Benjamin out of the army, and came to Shiloh the same day with his clothes rent, and with earth upon his head.

Da han kom frem, da satt Eli på sin stol ved siden av veien og så bortefter, for hans hjerte var fullt av angst for Guds ark. Da nu mannen kom til byen med buskapet, da satte hele byen i et jammerskrik.

And when he came, lo, Eli sat upon a seat by the wayside watching: for his heart trembled for the ark of God. And when the man came into the city, and told it, all the city cried out.

Eli hørte skriket og sa: Hvad er dette for en larm? Da skyndte mannen sig og kom og fortalte det til Eli.

And when Eli heard the noise of the crying, he said, What meaneth the noise of this tumult? And the man came in hastily, and told Eli.

Eli var da åtte og nitti år gammel, og hans øine var stive - han kunde ikke se.

Now Eli was ninety and eight years old; and his eyes were dim, that he could not see.

Da nu mannen sa til Eli: Det er jeg som er kommet fra slagmarken, jeg flyktet fra slagmarken idag, så spurte han: Hvorledes er det gått, min sønn?

And the man said unto Eli, I am he that came out of the army, and I fled to day out of the army. And he said, What is there done, my son?

Den som kom med buskapet, svarte: Israel er flyktet for filistrene, og det har vært et stort mannefall blandt folket; dine to sønner, Hofni og Pinehas, har og mistet livet, og Guds ark er tatt.

And the messenger answered and said, Israel is fled before the Philistines, and there hath been also a great slaughter among the people, and thy two sons also, Hophni and Phinehas, are dead, and the ark of God is taken.

Med det samme han nevnte Guds ark, falt Eli baklengs ned av stolen ved siden av porten, brakk nakkebenet og døde; for mannen var gammel og tung. Han hadde dømt Israel i firti år.

And it came to pass, when he made mention of the ark of God, that he fell from off the seat backward by the side of the gate, and his neck brake, and he died: for he was an old man, and heavy. And he had judged Israel forty years.

Hans sønnekone, Pinehas' hustru, var fruktsommelig og nær ved å føde, og da hun hørte buskapet om at Guds ark var tatt, og at hennes svigerfar og hennes mann var død, seg hun i kne og fødte; for veene kom brått over henne.

And his daughter in law, Phinehas' wife, was with child, near to be delivered: and when she heard the tidings that the ark of God was taken, and that her father in law and her husband were dead, she bowed herself and travailed; for her pains came upon her.

I hennes dødsstund sa de kvinner som stod hos henne: Vær ved godt mot; du har født en sønn! Men hun svarte ikke og aktet ikke derpå.

And about the time of her death the women that stood by her said unto her, Fear not; for thou hast born a son. But she answered not, neither did she regard it.

Hun kalte gutten Ikabod og sa: Bortveket er herligheten fra Israel - fordi Guds ark var tatt, og for hennes svigerfars og hennes manns skyld.

And she named the child I–chabod, saying, The glory is departed from Israel: because the ark of God was taken, and because of her father in law and her husband.

Hun sa: Bortveket er herligheten fra Israel; for Guds ark er tatt.

And she said, The glory is departed from Israel: for the ark of God is taken.
