Nehemiah 9

Now in the twenty and fourth day of this month the children of Israel were assembled with fasting, and with sackclothes, and earth upon them.

اُسی مہینے کے 24ویں دن اسرائیلی روزہ رکھنے کے لئے جمع ہوئے۔ ٹاٹ کے لباس پہنے ہوئے اور سر پر خاک ڈال کر وہ یروشلم آئے۔

And the seed of Israel separated themselves from all strangers, and stood and confessed their sins, and the iniquities of their fathers.

اب وہ تمام غیریہودیوں سے الگ ہو کر اُن گناہوں کا اقرار کرنے کے لئے حاضر ہوئے جو اُن سے اور اُن کے باپ دادا سے سرزد ہوئے تھے۔

And they stood up in their place, and read in the book of the law of the LORD their God one fourth part of the day; and another fourth part they confessed, and worshipped the LORD their God.

تین گھنٹے وہ کھڑے رہے، اور اُس دوران رب اُن کے خدا کی شریعت کی تلاوت کی گئی۔ پھر وہ رب اپنے خدا کے سامنے منہ کے بل جھک کر مزید تین گھنٹے اپنے گناہوں کا اقرار کرتے رہے۔

Then stood up upon the stairs, of the Levites, Jeshua, and Bani, Kadmiel, Shebaniah, Bunni, Sherebiah, Bani, and Chenani, and cried with a loud voice unto the LORD their God.

یشوع، بانی، قدمی ایل، سبنیاہ، بُنی، سربیاہ، بانی اور کنانی جو لاوی تھے ایک چبوترے پر کھڑے ہوئے اور بلند آواز سے رب اپنے خدا سے دعا کی۔

Then the Levites, Jeshua, and Kadmiel, Bani, Hashabniah, Sherebiah, Hodijah, Shebaniah, and Pethahiah, said, Stand up and bless the LORD your God for ever and ever: and blessed be thy glorious name, which is exalted above all blessing and praise.

پھر یشوع، قدمی ایل، بانی، حسبنیاہ، سربیاہ، ہودیاہ، سبنیاہ اور فتحیاہ جو لاوی تھے بول اُٹھے، ”کھڑے ہو کر رب اپنے خدا کی جو ازل سے ابد تک ہے ستائش کریں!“ اُنہوں دعا کی، ”تیرے جلالی نام کی تمجید ہو، جو ہر مبارک بادی اور تعریف سے کہیں بڑھ کر ہے۔

Thou, even thou, art LORD alone; thou hast made heaven, the heaven of heavens, with all their host, the earth, and all things that are therein, the seas, and all that is therein, and thou preservest them all; and the host of heaven worshippeth thee.

اے رب، تُو ہی واحد خدا ہے! تُو نے آسمان کو ایک سرے سے دوسرے سرے تک اُس کے لشکر سمیت خلق کیا۔ زمین اور جو کچھ اُس پر ہے، سمندر اور جو کچھ اُس میں ہے سب کچھ تُو ہی نے بنایا ہے۔ تُو نے سب کو زندگی بخشی ہے، اور آسمانی لشکر تجھے سجدہ کرتا ہے۔

Thou art the LORD the God, who didst choose Abram, and broughtest him forth out of Ur of the Chaldees, and gavest him the name of Abraham;

تُو ہی رب اور وہ خدا ہے جس نے ابرام کو چن لیا اور کسدیوں کے شہر اُور سے باہر لا کر ابراہیم کا نام رکھا۔

And foundest his heart faithful before thee, and madest a covenant with him to give the land of the Canaanites, the Hittites, the Amorites, and the Perizzites, and the Jebusites, and the Girgashites, to give it, I say, to his seed, and hast performed thy words; for thou art righteous:

تُو نے اُس کا دل وفادار پایا اور اُس سے عہد باندھ کر وعدہ کیا، ’مَیں تیری اولاد کو کنعانیوں، حِتّیوں، اموریوں، فرِزّیوں، یبوسیوں اور جرجاسیوں کا ملک عطا کروں گا۔‘ اور تُو اپنے وعدے پر پورا اُترا، کیونکہ تُو قابلِ اعتماد اور عادل ہے۔

And didst see the affliction of our fathers in Egypt, and heardest their cry by the Red sea;

تُو نے ہمارے باپ دادا کے مصر میں بُرے حال پر دھیان دیا، اور بحرِ قُلزم کے کنارے پر مدد کے لئے اُن کی چیخیں سنیں۔

And shewedst signs and wonders upon Pharaoh, and on all his servants, and on all the people of his land: for thou knewest that they dealt proudly against them. So didst thou get thee a name, as it is this day.

تُو نے الٰہی نشانوں اور معجزوں سے فرعون، اُس کے افسروں اور اُس کے ملک کی قوم کو سزا دی، کیونکہ تُو جانتا تھا کہ مصری ہمارے باپ دادا سے کیسا گستاخانہ سلوک کرتے رہے ہیں۔ یوں تیرا نام مشہور ہوا اور آج تک یاد رہا ہے۔

And thou didst divide the sea before them, so that they went through the midst of the sea on the dry land; and their persecutors thou threwest into the deeps, as a stone into the mighty waters.

قوم کے دیکھتے دیکھتے تُو نے سمندر کو دو حصوں میں تقسیم کر دیا، اور وہ خشک زمین پر چل کر اُس میں سے گزر سکے۔ لیکن اُن کا تعاقب کرنے والوں کو تُو نے متلاطم پانی میں پھینک دیا، اور وہ پتھروں کی طرح سمندر کی گہرائیوں میں ڈوب گئے۔

Moreover thou leddest them in the day by a cloudy pillar; and in the night by a pillar of fire, to give them light in the way wherein they should go.

دن کے وقت تُو نے بادل کے ستون سے اور رات کے وقت آگ کے ستون سے اپنی قوم کی راہنمائی کی۔ یوں وہ راستہ اندھیرے میں بھی روشن رہا جس پر اُنہیں چلنا تھا۔

Thou camest down also upon mount Sinai, and spakest with them from heaven, and gavest them right judgments, and true laws, good statutes and commandments:

تُو کوہِ سینا پر اُتر آیا اور آسمان سے اُن سے ہم کلام ہوا۔ تُو نے اُنہیں صاف ہدایات اور قابلِ اعتماد احکام دیئے، ایسے قواعد جو اچھے ہیں۔

And madest known unto them thy holy sabbath, and commandedst them precepts, statutes, and laws, by the hand of Moses thy servant:

تُو نے اُنہیں سبت کے دن کے بارے میں آگاہ کیا، اُس دن کے بارے میں جو تیرے لئے مخصوص و مُقدّس ہے۔ اپنے خادم موسیٰ کی معرفت تُو نے اُنہیں احکام اور ہدایات دیں۔

And gavest them bread from heaven for their hunger, and broughtest forth water for them out of the rock for their thirst, and promisedst them that they should go in to possess the land which thou hadst sworn to give them.

جب وہ بھوکے تھے تو تُو نے اُنہیں آسمان سے روٹی کھلائی، اور جب پیاسے تھے تو تُو نے اُنہیں چٹان سے پانی پلایا۔ تُو نے حکم دیا، ’جاؤ، ملک میں داخل ہو کر اُس پر قبضہ کر لو، کیونکہ مَیں نے ہاتھ اُٹھا کر قَسم کھائی ہے کہ تمہیں یہ ملک دوں گا۔‘

But they and our fathers dealt proudly, and hardened their necks, and hearkened not to thy commandments,

افسوس، ہمارے باپ دادا مغرور اور ضدی ہو گئے۔ وہ تیرے احکام کے تابع نہ رہے۔

And refused to obey, neither were mindful of thy wonders that thou didst among them; but hardened their necks, and in their rebellion appointed a captain to return to their bondage: but thou art a God ready to pardon, gracious and merciful, slow to anger, and of great kindness, and forsookest them not.

اُنہوں نے تیری سننے سے انکار کیا اور وہ معجزات یاد نہ رکھے جو تُو نے اُن کے درمیان کئے تھے۔ وہ یہاں تک اَڑ گئے کہ اُنہوں نے ایک راہنما کو مقرر کیا جو اُنہیں مصر کی غلامی میں واپس لے جائے۔ لیکن تُو معاف کرنے والا خدا ہے جو مہربان اور رحیم، تحمل اور شفقت سے بھرپور ہے۔ تُو نے اُنہیں ترک نہ کیا،

Yea, when they had made them a molten calf, and said, This is thy God that brought thee up out of Egypt, and had wrought great provocations;

اُس وقت بھی نہیں جب اُنہوں نے اپنے لئے سونے کا بچھڑا ڈھال کر کہا، ’یہ تیرا خدا ہے جو تجھے مصر سے نکال لایا۔‘ اِس قسم کا سنجیدہ کفر وہ بکتے رہے۔

Yet thou in thy manifold mercies forsookest them not in the wilderness: the pillar of the cloud departed not from them by day, to lead them in the way; neither the pillar of fire by night, to shew them light, and the way wherein they should go.

لیکن تُو بہت رحم دل ہے، اِس لئے تُو نے اُنہیں ریگستان میں نہ چھوڑا۔ دن کے وقت بادل کا ستون اُن کی راہنمائی کرتا رہا، اور رات کے وقت آگ کا ستون وہ راستہ روشن کرتا رہا جس پر اُنہیں چلنا تھا۔

Thou gavest also thy good spirit to instruct them, and withheldest not thy manna from their mouth, and gavest them water for their thirst.

نہ صرف یہ بلکہ تُو نے اُنہیں اپنا نیک روح عطا کیا جو اُنہیں تعلیم دے۔ جب اُنہیں بھوک اور پیاس تھی تو تُو اُنہیں مَن کھلانے اور پانی پلانے سے باز نہ آیا۔

Yea, forty years didst thou sustain them in the wilderness, so that they lacked nothing; their clothes waxed not old, and their feet swelled not.

چالیس سال وہ ریگستان میں پھرتے رہے، اور اُس پورے عرصے میں تُو اُن کی ضروریات کو پورا کرتا رہا۔ اُنہیں کوئی بھی کمی نہیں تھی۔ نہ اُن کے کپڑے گھس کر پھٹے اور نہ اُن کے پاؤں سوجے۔

Moreover thou gavest them kingdoms and nations, and didst divide them into corners: so they possessed the land of Sihon, and the land of the king of Heshbon, and the land of Og king of Bashan.

تُو نے ممالک اور قومیں اُن کے حوالے کر دیں، مختلف علا‌قے یکے بعد دیگرے اُن کے قبضے میں آئے۔ یوں وہ سیحون بادشاہ کے ملک حسبون اور عوج بادشاہ کے ملک بسن پر فتح پا سکے۔

Their children also multipliedst thou as the stars of heaven, and broughtest them into the land, concerning which thou hadst promised to their fathers, that they should go in to possess it.

اُن کی اولاد تیری مرضی سے آسمان پر کے ستاروں جیسی بےشمار ہوئی، اور تُو اُنہیں اُس ملک میں لایا جس کا وعدہ تُو نے اُن کے باپ دادا سے کیا تھا۔

So the children went in and possessed the land, and thou subduedst before them the inhabitants of the land, the Canaanites, and gavest them into their hands, with their kings, and the people of the land, that they might do with them as they would.

وہ ملک میں داخل ہو کر اُس کے مالک بن گئے۔ تُو نے کنعان کے باشندوں کو اُن کے آگے آگے زیر کر دیا۔ ملک کے بادشاہ اور قومیں اُن کے قبضے میں آ گئیں، اور وہ اپنی مرضی کے مطابق اُن سے نپٹ سکے۔

And they took strong cities, and a fat land, and possessed houses full of all goods, wells digged, vineyards, and oliveyards, and fruit trees in abundance: so they did eat, and were filled, and became fat, and delighted themselves in thy great goodness.

قلعہ بند شہر اور زرخیز زمینیں تیری قوم کے قابو میں آ گئیں، نیز ہر قسم کی اچھی چیزوں سے بھرے گھر، تیار شدہ حوض، انگور کے باغ اور کثرت کے زیتون اور دیگر پھل دار درخت۔ وہ جی بھر کر کھانا کھا کر موٹے ہو گئے اور تیری برکتوں سے لطف اندوز ہوتے رہے۔

Nevertheless they were disobedient, and rebelled against thee, and cast thy law behind their backs, and slew thy prophets which testified against them to turn them to thee, and they wrought great provocations.

اِس کے باوجود وہ تابع نہ رہے بلکہ سرکش ہوئے۔ اُنہوں نے اپنا منہ تیری شریعت سے پھیر لیا۔ اور جب تیرے نبی اُنہیں سمجھا سمجھا کر تیرے پاس واپس لانا چاہتے تھے تو اُنہوں نے بڑے کفر بک کر اُنہیں قتل کر دیا۔

Therefore thou deliveredst them into the hand of their enemies, who vexed them: and in the time of their trouble, when they cried unto thee, thou heardest them from heaven; and according to thy manifold mercies thou gavest them saviours, who saved them out of the hand of their enemies.

یہ دیکھ کر تُو نے اُنہیں اُن کے دشمنوں کے حوالے کر دیا جو اُنہیں تنگ کرتے رہے۔ جب وہ مصیبت میں پھنس گئے تو وہ چیخیں مار مار کر تجھ سے فریاد کرنے لگے۔ اور تُو نے آسمان پر سے اُن کی سنی۔ بڑا ترس کھا کر تُو نے اُن کے پاس ایسے لوگوں کو بھیج دیا جنہوں نے اُنہیں دشمنوں کے ہاتھ سے چھڑایا۔

But after they had rest, they did evil again before thee: therefore leftest thou them in the hand of their enemies, so that they had the dominion over them: yet when they returned, and cried unto thee, thou heardest them from heaven; and many times didst thou deliver them according to thy mercies;

لیکن جوں ہی اسرائیلیوں کو سکون ملتا وہ دوبارہ ایسی حرکتیں کرنے لگتے جو تجھے ناپسند تھیں۔ نتیجے میں تُو اُنہیں دوبارہ اُن کے دشمن کے ہاتھ میں چھوڑ دیتا۔ جب وہ اُن کی حکومت کے تحت پِسنے لگتے تو وہ ایک بار پھر چلّا چلّا کر تجھ سے التماس کرنے لگتے۔ اِس بار بھی تُو آسمان پر سے اُن کی سنتا۔ ہاں، تُو اِتنا رحم دل ہے کہ تُو اُنہیں بار بار چھٹکارا دیتا رہا!

And testifiedst against them, that thou mightest bring them again unto thy law: yet they dealt proudly, and hearkened not unto thy commandments, but sinned against thy judgments, (which if a man do, he shall live in them;) and withdrew the shoulder, and hardened their neck, and would not hear.

تُو اُنہیں سمجھاتا رہا تاکہ وہ دوبارہ تیری شریعت کی طرف رجوع کریں، لیکن وہ مغرور تھے اور تیرے احکام کے تابع نہ ہوئے۔ اُنہوں نے تیری ہدایات کی خلاف ورزی کی، حالانکہ اِن ہی پر چلنے سے انسان کو زندگی حاصل ہوتی ہے۔ لیکن اُنہوں نے پروا نہ کی بلکہ اپنا منہ تجھ سے پھیر کر اَڑ گئے اور سننے کے لئے تیار نہ ہوئے۔

Yet many years didst thou forbear them, and testifiedst against them by thy spirit in thy prophets: yet would they not give ear: therefore gavest thou them into the hand of the people of the lands.

اُن کی حرکتوں کے باوجود تُو بہت سالوں تک صبر کرتا رہا۔ تیرا روح اُنہیں نبیوں کے ذریعے سمجھاتا رہا، لیکن اُنہوں نے دھیان نہ دیا۔ تب تُو نے اُنہیں غیرقوموں کے حوالے کر دیا۔

Nevertheless for thy great mercies' sake thou didst not utterly consume them, nor forsake them; for thou art a gracious and merciful God.

تاہم تیرا رحم سے بھرا دل اُنہیں ترک کر کے تباہ نہیں کرنا چاہتا تھا۔ تُو کتنا مہربان اور رحیم خدا ہے!

Now therefore, our God, the great, the mighty, and the terrible God, who keepest covenant and mercy, let not all the trouble seem little before thee, that hath come upon us, on our kings, on our princes, and on our priests, and on our prophets, and on our fathers, and on all thy people, since the time of the kings of Assyria unto this day.

اے ہمارے خدا، اے عظیم، قوی اور مہیب خدا جو اپنا عہد اور اپنی شفقت قائم رکھتا ہے، اِس وقت ہماری مصیبت پر دھیان دے اور اُسے کم نہ سمجھ! کیونکہ ہمارے بادشاہ، بزرگ، امام اور نبی بلکہ ہمارے باپ دادا اور پوری قوم اسوری بادشاہوں کے پہلے حملوں سے لے کر آج تک سخت مصیبت برداشت کرتے رہے ہیں۔

Howbeit thou art just in all that is brought upon us; for thou hast done right, but we have done wickedly:

حقیقت تو یہ ہے کہ جو بھی مصیبت ہم پر آئی ہے اُس میں تُو راست ثابت ہوا ہے۔ تُو وفادار رہا ہے، گو ہم قصوروار ٹھہرے ہیں۔

Neither have our kings, our princes, our priests, nor our fathers, kept thy law, nor hearkened unto thy commandments and thy testimonies, wherewith thou didst testify against them.

ہمارے بادشاہ اور بزرگ، ہمارے امام اور باپ دادا، اُن سب نے تیری شریعت کی پیروی نہ کی۔ جو احکام اور تنبیہ تُو نے اُنہیں دی اُس پر اُنہوں نے دھیان ہی نہ دیا۔

For they have not served thee in their kingdom, and in thy great goodness that thou gavest them, and in the large and fat land which thou gavest before them, neither turned they from their wicked works.

تُو نے اُنہیں اُن کی اپنی بادشاہی، کثرت کی اچھی چیزوں اور ایک وسیع اور زرخیز ملک سے نوازا تھا۔ توبھی وہ تیری خدمت کرنے کے لئے تیار نہ تھے اور اپنی غلط راہوں سے باز نہ آئے۔

Behold, we are servants this day, and for the land that thou gavest unto our fathers to eat the fruit thereof and the good thereof, behold, we are servants in it:

اِس کا انجام یہ ہوا ہے کہ آج ہم اُس ملک میں غلام ہیں جو تُو نے ہمارے باپ دادا کو عطا کیا تھا تاکہ وہ اُس کی پیداوار اور دولت سے لطف اندوز ہو جائیں۔

And it yieldeth much increase unto the kings whom thou hast set over us because of our sins: also they have dominion over our bodies, and over our cattle, at their pleasure, and we are in great distress.

ملک کی وافر پیداوار اُن بادشاہوں تک پہنچتی ہے جنہیں تُو نے ہمارے گناہوں کی وجہ سے ہم پر مقرر کیا ہے۔ اب وہی ہم پر اور ہمارے مویشیوں پر حکومت کرتے ہیں۔ اُن ہی کی مرضی چلتی ہے۔ چنانچہ ہم بڑی مصیبت میں پھنسے ہیں۔

And because of all this we make a sure covenant, and write it; and our princes, Levites, and priests, seal unto it.

یہ تمام باتیں مدِ نظر رکھ کر ہم عہد باندھ کر اُسے قلم بند کر رہے ہیں۔ ہمارے بزرگ، لاوی اور امام دست خط کر کے عہدنامے پر مُہر لگا رہے ہیں۔“
