I Samuel 24

وقتی شائول از جنگ با فلسطینیان بازگشت، به او خبر دادند که داوود به بیابان عین جدّی رفته است.

And it came to pass, when Saul was returned from following the Philistines, that it was told him, saying, Behold, David is in the wilderness of En–gedi.

پس شائول با یک سپاه مخصوص سه هزار نفری از بهترین سربازان اسرائیل، برای یافتن داوود و همراهانش در بین صخره‌های بُزهای کوهی به جستجو پرداخت.

Then Saul took three thousand chosen men out of all Israel, and went to seek David and his men upon the rocks of the wild goats.

در سر راه خود طویله‌ای را دیدند که نزدیک به غاری بود. و شائول برای قضای حاجت به آن غار رفت. اتّفاقاً داوود و مردان او هم در درون همان غار پنهان شده بودند.

And he came to the sheepcotes by the way, where was a cave; and Saul went in to cover his feet: and David and his men remained in the sides of the cave.

همراهان داوود به او گفتند: «امروز همان روزی است که خداوند فرمود: من دشمنت را به دستت می‌سپارم و هرچه دلت بخواهد با او بکن!» آنگاه داوود برخاست و آهسته رفت و گوشهٔ ردای شائول را برید.

And the men of David said unto him, Behold the day of which the LORD said unto thee, Behold, I will deliver thine enemy into thine hand, that thou mayest do to him as it shall seem good unto thee. Then David arose, and cut off the skirt of Saul's robe privily.

امّا بعداً وجدانش او را ناراحت کرد که چرا گوشهٔ ردای شائول را بریده.

And it came to pass afterward, that David's heart smote him, because he had cut off Saul's skirt.

او به همراه خود گفت: «من نباید این کار را می‌کردم، زیرا گناه بزرگی را مرتکب شدم که به پادشاه برگزیدهٔ خداوند چنین بی‌احترامی کردم.»

And he said unto his men, The LORD forbid that I should do this thing unto my master, the LORD'S anointed, to stretch forth mine hand against him, seeing he is the anointed of the LORD.

سخنان داوود به همراهانش اخطاریه‌ای بود که اجازه ندارند به شائول ضرری برسانند. بعد شائول از غار خارج شد و به راه خود رفت.

So David stayed his servants with these words, and suffered them not to rise against Saul. But Saul rose up out of the cave, and went on his way.

داوود هم برخاست و از غار بیرون رفت واز پشت سر شائول را صدا کرد: «ای پادشاه!» وقتی شائول به عقب نگاه کرد، داوود خَم شد و تعظیم کرد

David also arose afterward, and went out of the cave, and cried after Saul, saying, My lord the king. And when Saul looked behind him, David stooped with his face to the earth, and bowed himself.

و به شائول گفت: «چرا به حرف مردم که می‌گویند من می‌خواهم به تو ضرر برسانم گوش می‌دهی؟

And David said to Saul, Wherefore hearest thou men's words, saying, Behold, David seeketh thy hurt?

امروز به چشم خود دیدی که حقیقت ندارد، زیرا خداوند در آن غار تو را به دست من داد و حتّی بعضی از همراهانم مرا تشویق کردند که تو را بکشم، امّا من بر تو رحم کردم و گفتم که هرگز دست خود را بر آقای خود بلند نمی‌کنم، زیرا که او پادشاه برگزیدهٔ خداوند است.

Behold, this day thine eyes have seen how that the LORD had delivered thee to day into mine hand in the cave: and some bade me kill thee: but mine eye spared thee; and I said, I will not put forth mine hand against my lord; for he is the LORD'S anointed.

ببین، این یک تکه از ردای توست که من آن را بریدم، ولی تو را نکشتم. پس باید بدانی و یقین کنی که من قصد ندارم به تو هیچ آسیبی برسانم. من هیچ گناهی نکرده‌ام، امّا تو برای کشتن من در همه‌جا به دنبال من هستی.

Moreover, my father, see, yea, see the skirt of thy robe in my hand: for in that I cut off the skirt of thy robe, and killed thee not, know thou and see that there is neither evil nor transgression in mine hand, and I have not sinned against thee; yet thou huntest my soul to take it.

خداوند بین من و تو داور باشد. خداوند انتقام مرا از تو بگیرد. من با تو کاری ندارم.

The LORD judge between me and thee, and the LORD avenge me of thee: but mine hand shall not be upon thee.

این مَثَل قدیمی که می‌گویند: 'کار بد از مردم بد سرمی‌زند.' با وجود بدیهایی که تو در حقّ من کرده‌ای، من قصد ندارم که به تو بدی کنم.

As saith the proverb of the ancients, Wickedness proceedeth from the wicked: but mine hand shall not be upon thee.

پادشاه اسرائیل می‌خواهد چه کسی را بکشد و در تعقیب چه کسی است؟ یک سگ مرده و یا یک پشهٔ ناچیز؟

After whom is the king of Israel come out? after whom dost thou pursue? after a dead dog, after a flea.

خداوند خودش در بین ما داوری کند و معلوم کند که اشتباه از چه کسی است و مرا حفظ کند و از دست تو نجات دهد.»

The LORD therefore be judge, and judge between me and thee, and see, and plead my cause, and deliver me out of thine hand.

وقتی داوود سخنان خود را تمام کرد، شائول گفت: «داوود فرزندم این تو هستی؟» آنگاه شائول با صدای بلند گریه کرد

And it came to pass, when David had made an end of speaking these words unto Saul, that Saul said, Is this thy voice, my son David? And Saul lifted up his voice, and wept.

و به داوود گفت: «تو حقّ داری و من اشتباه کردم. با اینکه من در مورد تو این‌همه بدی کردم، تو به من خوبی کردی.

And he said to David, Thou art more righteous than I: for thou hast rewarded me good, whereas I have rewarded thee evil.

بلی، امروز به من ثابت شد که تو چه احسان بزرگی در حقّ من کردی. زیرا خداوند مرا به دست تو سپرد، ولی تو مرا نکشتی.

And thou hast shewed this day how that thou hast dealt well with me: forasmuch as when the LORD had delivered me into thine hand, thou killedst me not.

چه کسی است که به دست دشمنش بیفتد و هیچ آسیبی به او نرساند و او را رها کند؟ خداوند به‌خاطر این احسانی که امروز در حقّ من کردی به تو پاداش بدهد.

For if a man find his enemy, will he let him go well away? wherefore the LORD reward thee good for that thou hast done unto me this day.

اکنون اطمینان دارم که تو به پادشاهی می‌رسی و سلطنت اسرائیل را استوار خواهی نمود.

And now, behold, I know well that thou shalt surely be king, and that the kingdom of Israel shall be established in thine hand.

پس به نام خداوند قسم بُخور که بعد از من، خانواده‌ام را از بین نبری و نام مرا در خانوادهٔ پدرم محو نکنی.»

Swear now therefore unto me by the LORD, that thou wilt not cut off my seed after me, and that thou wilt not destroy my name out of my father's house.

داوود قسم خورد. بعد شائول به خانهٔ خود رفت و داوود و همراهانش به غار برگشتند.

And David sware unto Saul. And Saul went home; but David and his men gat them up unto the hold.
