I Samuel 11

Then Nahash the Ammonite came up, and encamped against Jabesh–gilead: and all the men of Jabesh said unto Nahash, Make a covenant with us, and we will serve thee.

Na-hách, người Am-môn, đi ra đến vây Gia-be trong Ga-la-át. Cả dân Gia-be nói cùng Na-hách rằng: Hãy lập ước cùng chúng tôi, thì chúng tôi sẽ phục sự ông.

And Nahash the Ammonite answered them, On this condition will I make a covenant with you, that I may thrust out all your right eyes, and lay it for a reproach upon all Israel.

Na-hách, người Am-môn, đáp rằng: Ta sẽ lập ước cùng các ngươi theo cách nầy: phải khoét hết thảy con mắt hữu của các ngươi, để gieo sự sỉ nhục cho cả Y-sơ-ra-ên.

And the elders of Jabesh said unto him, Give us seven days' respite, that we may send messengers unto all the coasts of Israel: and then, if there be no man to save us, we will come out to thee.

Các trưởng lão Gia-be nói cùng người rằng: Xin hãy cho chúng tôi bảy ngày đình chiến, chúng tôi sẽ sai sứ giả đến khắp địa phận Y-sơ-ra-ên; nếu không ai giải cứu chúng tôi, thì chúng tôi sẽ đi ra hàng đầu.

Then came the messengers to Gibeah of Saul, and told the tidings in the ears of the people: and all the people lifted up their voices, and wept.

Vậy, những sứ giả đi đến Ghi-bê-a, thành của Sau-lơ, thuật lại các lời ấy cho dân sự nghe. Cả dân sự bèn cất tiếng lên khóc.

And, behold, Saul came after the herd out of the field; and Saul said, What aileth the people that they weep? And they told him the tidings of the men of Jabesh.

Lúc ấy, Sau-lơ ở ruộng trở về, đi sau bò mình; người hỏi rằng: Cớ chi dân sự khóc như vậy? Người ta thuật lại lời các người Gia-be đã nói.

And the Spirit of God came upon Saul when he heard those tidings, and his anger was kindled greatly.

Vừa nghe tin nầy, Sau-lơ được Thần của Ðức Chúa Trời cảm động, và cơn giận người nổi phừng phừng.

And he took a yoke of oxen, and hewed them in pieces, and sent them throughout all the coasts of Israel by the hands of messengers, saying, Whosoever cometh not forth after Saul and after Samuel, so shall it be done unto his oxen. And the fear of the LORD fell on the people, and they came out with one consent.

Người bắt một cặp bò, sả ra từng miếng, gởi cho sứ giả đem đến khắp địa phận Y-sơ-ra-ên với lời rao nầy: Phàm ai không ra theo Sau-lơ và Sa-mu-ên, thì các con bò nó tất sẽ bị làm như vậy. Sự kinh khủng của Ðức Giê-hô-va giáng trên dân sự, nên hết thảy chúng đều đi ra như chỉ một người.

And when he numbered them in Bezek, the children of Israel were three hundred thousand, and the men of Judah thirty thousand.

Sau-lơ kiểm điểm chúng tại Bê-xéc; có ba trăm ngàn người Y-sơ-ra-ên và ba mươi ngàn người Giu-đa.

And they said unto the messengers that came, Thus shall ye say unto the men of Jabesh–gilead, To morrow, by that time the sun be hot, ye shall have help. And the messengers came and shewed it to the men of Jabesh; and they were glad.

Chúng nói cùng sứ giả đã đến rằng: Hãy nói cùng người Gia-be trong Ga-la-át: Ðến mai, khi mặt trời đã nắng nóng, thì anh em sẽ được giải cứu. Những sứ giả đi về thuật lại các lời nầy cho dân Gia-be. Dân nầy lấy làm vui mừng,

Therefore the men of Jabesh said, To morrow we will come out unto you, and ye shall do with us all that seemeth good unto you.

và nói cùng người Am-môn rằng: Ngày mai, chúng ta sẽ đi ra cùng các ngươi, các ngươi sẽ đãi chúng ta theo ý mình lấy làm phải.

And it was so on the morrow, that Saul put the people in three companies; and they came into the midst of the host in the morning watch, and slew the Ammonites until the heat of the day: and it came to pass, that they which remained were scattered, so that two of them were not left together.

Nhưng sáng ngày mai, Sau-lơ chia dân sự ra làm ba đạo, hãm dinh dân Am-môn vừa lúc canh năm, và đánh dân Am-môn cho đến gần đứng bóng. Những người thoát khỏi thì bị tản lạc đến đỗi không có hai người chung nhau.

And the people said unto Samuel, Who is he that said, Shall Saul reign over us? bring the men, that we may put them to death.

Dân sự nói cùng Sa-mu-ên rằng: Ai đã nói: Sau-lơ há sẽ trị vì trên chúng ta sao? Hãy phó những người đó cho chúng tôi giết đi.

And Saul said, There shall not a man be put to death this day: for to day the LORD hath wrought salvation in Israel.

Nhưng Sau-lơ đáp: Chẳng ai sẽ bị xử tử trong ngày nay; vì ngày nay Ðức Giê-hô-va đã làm sự giải cứu trong Y-sơ-ra-ên.

Then said Samuel to the people, Come, and let us go to Gilgal, and renew the kingdom there.

Sa-mu-ên nói cùng dân sự rằng: Chúng ta hãy đi đến Ghinh-ganh đặng lập nước lại.

And all the people went to Gilgal; and there they made Saul king before the LORD in Gilgal; and there they sacrificed sacrifices of peace offerings before the LORD; and there Saul and all the men of Israel rejoiced greatly.

Cả dân sự đều đi đến Ghinh-ganh; tại đó, trước mặt Ðức Giê-hô-va, chúng lập Sau-lơ làm vua. Tại đó chúng dâng của lễ thù ân cho Ðức Giê-hô-va. Ðoạn, Sau-lơ và hết thảy người Y-sơ-ra-ên vui mừng khôn xiết.
