Nehemiah 2

And it came to pass in the month Nisan, in the twentieth year of Artaxerxes the king, that wine was before him: and I took up the wine, and gave it unto the king. Now I had not been beforetime sad in his presence.

چار مہینے گزر گئے۔ نیسان کے مہینے کے ایک دن جب مَیں شہنشاہ ارتخشستا کو مَے پلا رہا تھا تو میری مایوسی اُسے نظر آئی۔ پہلے اُس نے مجھے کبھی اُداس نہیں دیکھا تھا،

Wherefore the king said unto me, Why is thy countenance sad, seeing thou art not sick? this is nothing else but sorrow of heart. Then I was very sore afraid,

اِس لئے اُس نے پوچھا، ”آپ اِتنے غمگین کیوں دکھائی دے رہے ہیں؟ آپ بیمار تو نہیں لگتے بلکہ کوئی بات آپ کے دل کو تنگ کر رہی ہے۔“ مَیں سخت گھبرا گیا

And said unto the king, Let the king live for ever: why should not my countenance be sad, when the city, the place of my fathers' sepulchres, lieth waste, and the gates thereof are consumed with fire?

اور کہا، ”شہنشاہ ابد تک جیتا رہے! مَیں کس طرح خوش ہو سکتا ہوں؟ جس شہر میں میرے باپ دادا کو دفنایا گیا ہے وہ ملبے کا ڈھیر ہے، اور اُس کے دروازے راکھ ہو گئے ہیں۔“

Then the king said unto me, For what dost thou make request? So I prayed to the God of heaven.

شہنشاہ نے پوچھا، ”تو پھر مَیں کس طرح آپ کی مدد کروں؟“ خاموشی سے آسمان کے خدا سے دعا کر کے

And I said unto the king, If it please the king, and if thy servant have found favour in thy sight, that thou wouldest send me unto Judah, unto the city of my fathers' sepulchres, that I may build it.

مَیں نے شہنشاہ سے کہا، ”اگر بات آپ کو منظور ہو اور آپ اپنے خادم سے خوش ہوں تو پھر براہِ کرم مجھے یہوداہ کے اُس شہر بھیج دیجئے جس میں میرے باپ دادا دفن ہوئے ہیں تاکہ مَیں اُسے دوبارہ تعمیر کروں۔“

And the king said unto me, (the queen also sitting by him,) For how long shall thy journey be? and when wilt thou return? So it pleased the king to send me; and I set him a time.

اُس وقت ملکہ بھی ساتھ بیٹھی تھی۔ شہنشاہ نے سوال کیا، ”سفر کے لئے کتنا وقت درکار ہے؟ آپ کب تک واپس آ سکتے ہیں؟“ مَیں نے اُسے بتایا کہ مَیں کب تک واپس آؤں گا تو وہ متفق ہوا۔

Moreover I said unto the king, If it please the king, let letters be given me to the governors beyond the river, that they may convey me over till I come into Judah;

پھر مَیں نے گزارش کی، ”اگر بات آپ کو منظور ہو تو مجھے دریائے فرات کے مغربی علاقے کے گورنروں کے لئے خط دیجئے تاکہ وہ مجھے اپنے علاقوں میں سے گزرنے دیں اور مَیں سلامتی سے یہوداہ تک پہنچ سکوں۔

And a letter unto Asaph the keeper of the king's forest, that he may give me timber to make beams for the gates of the palace which appertained to the house, and for the wall of the city, and for the house that I shall enter into. And the king granted me, according to the good hand of my God upon me.

اِس کے علاوہ شاہی جنگلات کے نگران آسف کے لئے خط لکھوائیں تاکہ وہ مجھے لکڑی دے۔ جب مَیں رب کے گھر کے ساتھ والے قلعے کے دروازے، فصیل اور اپنا گھر بناؤں گا تو مجھے شہتیروں کی ضرورت ہو گی۔“ اللہ کا شفیق ہاتھ مجھ پر تھا، اِس لئے شہنشاہ نے مجھے یہ خط دے دیئے۔

Then I came to the governors beyond the river, and gave them the king's letters. Now the king had sent captains of the army and horsemen with me.

شہنشاہ نے فوجی افسر اور گھڑسوار بھی میرے ساتھ بھیجے۔ یوں روانہ ہو کر مَیں دریائے فرات کے مغربی علاقے کے گورنروں کے پاس پہنچا اور اُنہیں شہنشاہ کے خط دیئے۔

When Sanballat the Horonite, and Tobiah the servant, the Ammonite, heard of it, it grieved them exceedingly that there was come a man to seek the welfare of the children of Israel.

جب گورنر سنبلّط حورونی اور عمونی افسر طوبیاہ کو معلوم ہوا کہ کوئی اسرائیلیوں کی بہبودی کے لئے آ گیا ہے تو وہ نہایت ناخوش ہوئے۔

So I came to Jerusalem, and was there three days.

سفر کرتے کرتے مَیں یروشلم پہنچ گیا۔ تین دن کے بعد

And I arose in the night, I and some few men with me; neither told I any man what my God had put in my heart to do at Jerusalem: neither was there any beast with me, save the beast that I rode upon.

مَیں رات کے وقت شہر سے نکلا۔ میرے ساتھ چند ایک آدمی تھے، اور ہمارے پاس صرف وہی جانور تھا جس پر مَیں سوار تھا۔ اب تک مَیں نے کسی کو بھی اُس بوجھ کے بارے میں نہیں بتایا تھا جو میرے خدا نے میرے دل پر یروشلم کے لئے ڈال دیا تھا۔

And I went out by night by the gate of the valley, even before the dragon well, and to the dung port, and viewed the walls of Jerusalem, which were broken down, and the gates thereof were consumed with fire.

چنانچہ مَیں اندھیرے میں وادی کے دروازے سے شہر سے نکلا اور جنوب کی طرف اژدہے کے چشمے سے ہو کر کچرے کے دروازے تک پہنچا۔ ہر جگہ مَیں نے گری ہوئی فصیل اور بھسم ہوئے دروازوں کا معائنہ کیا۔

Then I went on to the gate of the fountain, and to the king's pool: but there was no place for the beast that was under me to pass.

پھر مَیں شمال یعنی چشمے کے دروازے اور شاہی تالاب کی طرف بڑھا، لیکن ملبے کی کثرت کی وجہ سے میرے جانور کو گزرنے کا راستہ نہ ملا،

Then went I up in the night by the brook, and viewed the wall, and turned back, and entered by the gate of the valley, and so returned.

اِس لئے مَیں وادیِ قدرون میں سے گزرا۔ اب تک اندھیرا ہی اندھیرا تھا۔ وہاں بھی مَیں فصیل کا معائنہ کرتا گیا۔ پھر مَیں مُڑا اور وادی کے دروازے میں سے دوبارہ شہر میں داخل ہوا۔

And the rulers knew not whither I went, or what I did; neither had I as yet told it to the Jews, nor to the priests, nor to the nobles, nor to the rulers, nor to the rest that did the work.

یروشلم کے افسروں کو معلوم نہیں تھا کہ مَیں کہاں گیا اور کیا کر رہا تھا۔ اب تک مَیں نے نہ اُنہیں اور نہ اماموں یا دیگر اُن لوگوں کو اپنے منصوبے سے آگاہ کیا تھا جنہیں تعمیر کا یہ کام کرنا تھا۔

Then said I unto them, Ye see the distress that we are in, how Jerusalem lieth waste, and the gates thereof are burned with fire: come, and let us build up the wall of Jerusalem, that we be no more a reproach.

لیکن اب مَیں اُن سے مخاطب ہوا، ”آپ کو خود ہماری مصیبت نظر آتی ہے۔ یروشلم ملبے کا ڈھیر بن گیا ہے، اور اُس کے دروازے راکھ ہو گئے ہیں۔ آئیں، ہم فصیل کو نئے سرے سے تعمیر کریں تاکہ ہم دوسروں کے مذاق کا نشانہ نہ بنے رہیں۔“

Then I told them of the hand of my God which was good upon me; as also the king's words that he had spoken unto me. And they said, Let us rise up and build. So they strengthened their hands for this good work.

مَیں نے اُنہیں بتایا کہ اللہ کا شفیق ہاتھ کس طرح مجھ پر رہا تھا اور کہ شہنشاہ نے مجھ سے کس قسم کا وعدہ کیا تھا۔ یہ سن کر اُنہوں نے جواب دیا، ”ٹھیک ہے، آئیں ہم تعمیر کا کام شروع کریں!“ چنانچہ وہ اِس اچھے کام میں لگ گئے۔

But when Sanballat the Horonite, and Tobiah the servant, the Ammonite, and Geshem the Arabian, heard it, they laughed us to scorn, and despised us, and said, What is this thing that ye do? will ye rebel against the king?

جب سنبلّط حورونی، عمونی افسر طوبیاہ اور جشم عربی کو اِس کی خبر ملی تو اُنہوں نے ہمارا مذاق اُڑا کر حقارت آمیز لہجے میں کہا، ”یہ تم لوگ کیا کر رہے ہو؟ کیا تم شہنشاہ سے غداری کرنا چاہتے ہو؟“

Then answered I them, and said unto them, The God of heaven, he will prosper us; therefore we his servants will arise and build: but ye have no portion, nor right, nor memorial, in Jerusalem.

مَیں نے جواب دیا، ”آسمان کا خدا ہمیں کامیابی عطا کرے گا۔ ہم جو اُس کے خادم ہیں تعمیر کا کام شروع کریں گے۔ جہاں تک یروشلم کا تعلق ہے، نہ آج اور نہ ماضی میں آپ کا کبھی کوئی حصہ یا حق تھا۔“
