Exodus 17

And all the congregation of the children of Israel journeyed from the wilderness of Sin, after their journeys, according to the commandment of the LORD, and pitched in Rephidim: and there was no water for the people to drink.

تمام بنی‌اسرائیل از بیابان سین کوچ کردند و طبق دستور خداوند از جایی به جای دیگر می‌رفتند. آنها در رفیدیم اردو زدند ولی در آنجا آب برای نوشیدن نداشتند.

Wherefore the people did chide with Moses, and said, Give us water that we may drink. And Moses said unto them, Why chide ye with me? wherefore do ye tempt the LORD?

پس با اعتراض به موسی گفتند: «به ما آب بده تا بنوشیم.» موسی در جواب آنها گفت: «چرا اعتراض می‌کنید؟ چرا خداوند را امتحان می‌کنید؟»

And the people thirsted there for water; and the people murmured against Moses, and said, Wherefore is this that thou hast brought us up out of Egypt, to kill us and our children and our cattle with thirst?

امّا مردم که خیلی تشنه بودند به شورش خود ادامه داده به موسی گفتند: «چرا ما را از مصر بیرون آوردی تا ما و بچّه‌ها و گلّه‌های ما را در این بیابان از تشنگی هلاک کنی؟»

And Moses cried unto the LORD, saying, What shall I do unto this people? they be almost ready to stone me.

موسی با التماس به خداوند عرض کرد: «با این قوم چه کنم؟ چون نزدیک است مرا سنگسار کنند.»

And the LORD said unto Moses, Go on before the people, and take with thee of the elders of Israel; and thy rod, wherewith thou smotest the river, take in thine hand, and go.

خداوند به موسی فرمود: «چند نفر از رهبران بنی‌اسرائیل را با خود بردار و پیشاپیش مردم برو. آن عصایی را که با آن به رود نیل زدی به دست بگیر.

Behold, I will stand before thee there upon the rock in Horeb; and thou shalt smite the rock, and there shall come water out of it, that the people may drink. And Moses did so in the sight of the elders of Israel.

من بر روی صخره‌ای در کوه سینا می‌ایستم. تو با عصایت به آن صخره بزن تا از آن صخره آب بیرون بیاید و مردم بنوشند.» پس موسی در حضور تمام رهبران اسرائیل این کار را انجام داد.

And he called the name of the place Massah, and Meribah, because of the chiding of the children of Israel, and because they tempted the LORD, saying, Is the LORD among us, or not?

موسی اسم آن محل را مساه و مریبا گذاشت زیرا بنی‌اسرائیل در آنجا اعتراض کرده و خداوند را امتحان نمودند چون گفتند: «آیا خداوند با ما هست یا نه؟»

Then came Amalek, and fought with Israel in Rephidim.

عمالیقی‌ها آمدند و در رفیدیم با بنی‌اسرائیل به جنگ پرداختند.

And Moses said unto Joshua, Choose us out men, and go out, fight with Amalek: to morrow I will stand on the top of the hill with the rod of God in mine hand.

موسی به یوشع گفت: «عدّه‌ای از مردها را انتخاب کن و فردا به جنگ عمالیقی‌ها برو. من روی قلّهٔ کوه می‌ایستم و عصایی را که خداوند فرموده است به دست می‌گیرم.»

So Joshua did as Moses had said to him, and fought with Amalek: and Moses, Aaron, and Hur went up to the top of the hill.

یوشع هرچه موسی دستور داده بود انجام داد و به جنگ عمالیقی‌ها رفت. موسی و هارون و حور هم به قلّهٔ کوه رفتند.

And it came to pass, when Moses held up his hand, that Israel prevailed: and when he let down his hand, Amalek prevailed.

تا زمانی که موسی دستهای خود را بالا نگه می‌داشت، بنی‌اسرائیل پیروز می‌شدند امّا همین که موسی دستهایش را پایین می‌آورد عمالیقی‌ها پیروز می‌شدند.

But Moses' hands were heavy; and they took a stone, and put it under him, and he sat thereon; and Aaron and Hur stayed up his hands, the one on the one side, and the other on the other side; and his hands were steady until the going down of the sun.

وقتی دستهای موسی خسته شد، هارون و حور سنگی آوردند و موسی روی آن نشست و هارون و حور در دو طرف او ایستادند و دستهای او را بالا نگه داشتند. دستهای موسی تا غروب آفتاب بالا بود.

And Joshua discomfited Amalek and his people with the edge of the sword.

به این ترتیب یوشع عمالیقی‌ها را با شمشیر شکست داد.

And the LORD said unto Moses, Write this for a memorial in a book, and rehearse it in the ears of Joshua: for I will utterly put out the remembrance of Amalek from under heaven.

پس از آن خداوند به موسی فرمود: «این پیروزی را به یادگار در کتاب بنویس و به یوشع بگو من حتّی یاد عمالیقی‌ها را هم در زیر آسمان از بین خواهم برد.»

And Moses built an altar, and called the name of it Jehovah–nissi:

موسی قربانگاهی ساخت و آن را «خداوند پرچم من است» نامید.

For he said, Because the LORD hath sworn that the LORD will have war with Amalek from generation to generation.

و گفت: «پرچم خداوند برافراشته خواهد بود و خداوند تا ابد با عمالیق جنگ خواهد کرد.»
