Jonah 1

Now the word of the LORD came unto Jonah the son of Amittai, saying,

رب یونس بن امِتّی سے ہم کلام ہوا،

Arise, go to Nineveh, that great city, and cry against it; for their wickedness is come up before me.

”بڑے شہر نینوہ جا کر اُس پر میری عدالت کا اعلان کر، کیونکہ اُن کی بُرائی میرے حضور تک پہنچ گئی ہے۔“

But Jonah rose up to flee unto Tarshish from the presence of the LORD, and went down to Joppa; and he found a ship going to Tarshish: so he paid the fare thereof, and went down into it, to go with them unto Tarshish from the presence of the LORD.

یونس روانہ ہوا، لیکن مشرقی شہر نینوہ کے لئے نہیں بلکہ مغربی شہر ترسیس کے لئے۔ رب کے حضور سے فرار ہونے کے لئے وہ یافا شہر پہنچ گیا جہاں ایک بحری جہاز ترسیس کو جانے والا تھا۔ سفر کا کرایہ ادا کر کے یونس جہاز میں بیٹھ گیا تاکہ رب کے حضور سے بھاگ نکلے۔

But the LORD sent out a great wind into the sea, and there was a mighty tempest in the sea, so that the ship was like to be broken.

لیکن رب نے سمندر پر زبردست آندھی بھیجی۔ طوفان اِتنا شدید تھا کہ جہاز کے ٹکڑے ٹکڑے ہونے کا خطرہ تھا۔

Then the mariners were afraid, and cried every man unto his god, and cast forth the wares that were in the ship into the sea, to lighten it of them. But Jonah was gone down into the sides of the ship; and he lay, and was fast asleep.

ملاح سہم گئے، اور ہر ایک چیختا چلّاتا اپنے دیوتا سے التجا کرنے لگا۔ جہاز کو ہلکا کرنے کے لئے اُنہوں نے سامان کو سمندر میں پھینک دیا۔ لیکن یونس جہاز کے نچلے حصے میں لیٹ گیا تھا۔ اب وہ گہری نیند سو رہا تھا۔

So the shipmaster came to him, and said unto him, What meanest thou, O sleeper? arise, call upon thy God, if so be that God will think upon us, that we perish not.

پھر کپتان اُس کے پاس آیا اور کہنے لگا، ”آپ کس طرح سو سکتے ہیں؟ اُٹھیں، اپنے دیوتا سے التجا کریں! شاید وہ ہم پر دھیان دے اور ہم ہلاک نہ ہوں۔“

And they said every one to his fellow, Come, and let us cast lots, that we may know for whose cause this evil is upon us. So they cast lots, and the lot fell upon Jonah.

ملاح آپس میں کہنے لگے، ”آؤ، ہم قرعہ ڈال کر معلوم کریں کہ کون ہماری مصیبت کا باعث ہے۔“ اُنہوں نے قرعہ ڈالا تو یونس کا نام نکلا۔

Then said they unto him, Tell us, we pray thee, for whose cause this evil is upon us; What is thine occupation? and whence comest thou? what is thy country? and of what people art thou?

تب اُنہوں نے اُس سے پوچھا، ”ہمیں بتائیں کہ یہ آفت کس کے قصور کے باعث ہم پر نازل ہوئی ہے؟ آپ کیا کرتے ہیں، کہاں سے آئے ہیں، کس ملک اور کس قوم سے ہیں؟“

And he said unto them, I am an Hebrew; and I fear the LORD, the God of heaven, which hath made the sea and the dry land.

یونس نے جواب دیا، ”مَیں عبرانی ہوں، اور رب کا پرستار ہوں جو آسمان کا خدا ہے۔ سمندر اور خشکی دونوں اُسی نے بنائے ہیں۔“

Then were the men exceedingly afraid, and said unto him, Why hast thou done this? For the men knew that he fled from the presence of the LORD, because he had told them.

یونس نے اُنہیں یہ بھی بتایا کہ مَیں رب کے حضور سے فرار ہو رہا ہوں۔ یہ سب کچھ سن کر دیگر مسافروں پر شدید دہشت طاری ہوئی۔ اُنہوں نے کہا، ”یہ آپ نے کیا کِیا ہے؟“

Then said they unto him, What shall we do unto thee, that the sea may be calm unto us? for the sea wrought, and was tempestuous.

اِتنے میں سمندر مزید متلاطم ہوتا جا رہا تھا۔ چنانچہ اُنہوں نے پوچھا، ”اب ہم آپ کے ساتھ کیا کریں تاکہ سمندر تھم جائے اور ہمارا پیچھا چھوڑ دے؟“

And he said unto them, Take me up, and cast me forth into the sea; so shall the sea be calm unto you: for I know that for my sake this great tempest is upon you.

یونس نے جواب دیا، ”مجھے اُٹھا کر سمندر میں پھینک دیں تو وہ تھم جائے گا۔ کیونکہ مَیں جانتا ہوں کہ یہ بڑا طوفان میری ہی وجہ سے آپ پر ٹوٹ پڑا ہے۔“

Nevertheless the men rowed hard to bring it to the land; but they could not: for the sea wrought, and was tempestuous against them.

پہلے ملاحوں نے اُس کا مشورہ نہ مانا بلکہ چپو مار مار کر ساحل پر پہنچنے کی سرتوڑ کوشش کرتے رہے۔ لیکن بےفائدہ، سمندر پہلے کی نسبت کہیں زیادہ متلاطم ہو گیا۔

Wherefore they cried unto the LORD, and said, We beseech thee, O LORD, we beseech thee, let us not perish for this man's life, and lay not upon us innocent blood: for thou, O LORD, hast done as it pleased thee.

تب وہ بلند آواز سے رب سے التجا کرنے لگے، ”اے رب، ایسا نہ ہو کہ ہم اِس آدمی کی زندگی کے سبب سے ہلاک ہو جائیں۔ اور جب ہم اُسے سمندر میں پھینکیں گے تو ہمیں بےگناہ آدمی کی جان لینے کے ذمہ دار نہ ٹھہرا۔ کیونکہ جو کچھ ہو رہا ہے وہ تیری ہی مرضی سے ہو رہا ہے۔“

So they took up Jonah, and cast him forth into the sea: and the sea ceased from her raging.

یہ کہہ کر اُنہوں نے یونس کو اُٹھا کر سمندر میں پھینک دیا۔ پانی میں گرتے ہی سمندر ٹھاٹھیں مارنے سے باز آ کر تھم گیا۔

Then the men feared the LORD exceedingly, and offered a sacrifice unto the LORD, and made vows.

یہ دیکھ کر مسافروں پر سخت دہشت چھا گئی، اور اُنہوں نے رب کو ذبح کی قربانی پیش کی اور مَنتیں مانیں۔

Now the LORD had prepared a great fish to swallow up Jonah. And Jonah was in the belly of the fish three days and three nights.

لیکن رب نے ایک بڑی مچھلی کو یونس کے پاس بھیجا جس نے اُسے نگل لیا۔ یونس تین دن اور تین رات مچھلی کے پیٹ میں رہا۔
