II Samuel 11

And it came to pass, after the year was expired, at the time when kings go forth to battle, that David sent Joab, and his servants with him, and all Israel; and they destroyed the children of Ammon, and besieged Rabbah. But David tarried still at Jerusalem.

Qua năm mới, khi các vua thường ra tranh chiến, Ða-vít sai Giô-áp cùng các tôi tớ mình và cả đạo binh Y-sơ-ra-ên đánh giặc; chúng cướp phá xứ dân Am-môn và vây thành Ráp-ba. Nhưng vua Ða-vít ở lại Giê-ru-sa-lem.

And it came to pass in an eveningtide, that David arose from off his bed, and walked upon the roof of the king's house: and from the roof he saw a woman washing herself; and the woman was very beautiful to look upon.

Một buổi chiều kia, Ða-vít chổi dậy khỏi giường mình, đi dạo chơi trên nóc đền vua, bèn thấy một người nữ đương tắm; người nữ ấy rất là lịch sự.

And David sent and enquired after the woman. And one said, Is not this Bath–sheba, the daughter of Eliam, the wife of Uriah the Hittite?

Ða-vít sai hỏi người nữ ấy là ai, thì người ta thưa rằng: Ấy là Bát-Sê-ba, con gái của Ê-li-am, vợ của U-ri, người Hê-tít.

And David sent messengers, and took her; and she came in unto him, and he lay with her; for she was purified from her uncleanness: and she returned unto her house.

Ða-vít sai người đem nàng đến. Nàng đến nhà vua và vua ngủ với nàng. Sau khi nàng làm cho sạch sự ô uế mình, bèn trở về nhà.

And the woman conceived, and sent and told David, and said, I am with child.

Người nữ nầy thọ thai, sai người tâu cùng Ða-vít rằng: Tôi có thai.

And David sent to Joab, saying, Send me Uriah the Hittite. And Joab sent Uriah to David.

Ða-vít bèn truyền lịnh cho Giô-áp rằng: Hãy sai U-ri, người Hê-tít, đến cùng ta. Vậy, Giô-áp sau U-ri đến cùng Ða-vít.

And when Uriah was come unto him, David demanded of him how Joab did, and how the people did, and how the war prospered.

U-ri đến, Ða-vít hỏi thăm về Giô-áp và đạo binh có bình an chăng, cùng chiến trận ra thể nào.

And David said to Uriah, Go down to thy house, and wash thy feet. And Uriah departed out of the king's house, and there followed him a mess of meat from the king.

Ðoạn, vua nói cùng U-ri rằng: Hãy đi xuống nhà ngươi và rửa chơn đi. Vậy, U-ri đi ra khỏi đền vua, có người đem theo người một của ăn nhà vua.

But Uriah slept at the door of the king's house with all the servants of his lord, and went not down to his house.

Nhưng U-ri không về nhà mình, ngủ tại cửa đền vua cùng các tôi tớ vua.

And when they had told David, saying, Uriah went not down unto his house, David said unto Uriah, Camest thou not from thy journey? why then didst thou not go down unto thine house?

Người ta thuật điều đó cho Ða-vít và nói rằng: U-ri không có đi xuống nhà người. Ða-vít hỏi U-ri rằng: Chớ thì ngươi chẳng đi đường trở về sao? Cớ sao không đi xuống nhà ngươi?

And Uriah said unto David, The ark, and Israel, and Judah, abide in tents; and my lord Joab, and the servants of my lord, are encamped in the open fields; shall I then go into mine house, to eat and to drink, and to lie with my wife? as thou livest, and as thy soul liveth, I will not do this thing.

U-ri thưa cùng Ða-vít rằng: Hòm giao ước, Y-sơ-ra-ên, và Giu-đa, vẫn ở dưới trại, Giô-áp, là chúa tôi, luôn với các tôi tớ chúa tôi đương hạ trại nơi đồng trống, còn tôi lại vào nhà mình đặng ăn, uống, và ngủ cùng vợ mình sao? Tôi chỉ mạng sống và linh hồn của vua mà thề rằng, tôi chẳng biết làm một sự như vậy!

And David said to Uriah, Tarry here to day also, and to morrow I will let thee depart. So Uriah abode in Jerusalem that day, and the morrow.

Ða-vít nói cùng U-ri rằng: Hãy còn ở đây ngày nay, rồi mai ta sẽ sai ngươi đi. Vậy, U-ri ở lại tại Giê-ru-sa-lem ngày ấy và ngày sau.

And when David had called him, he did eat and drink before him; and he made him drunk: and at even he went out to lie on his bed with the servants of his lord, but went not down to his house.

Ðoạn, Ða-vít vời người ăn uống tại trước mặt mình, và làm cho người say; nhưng chiều tối, U-ri đi ra ngủ trên giường mình với các tôi tớ của người, chớ không có đi xuống nhà mình.

And it came to pass in the morning, that David wrote a letter to Joab, and sent it by the hand of Uriah.

Sáng ngày mai, Ða-vít viết một cái thơ cho Giô-áp, và gởi nơi tay U-ri.

And he wrote in the letter, saying, Set ye Uriah in the forefront of the hottest battle, and retire ye from him, that he may be smitten, and die.

Người viết như vầy: Hãy đặt U-ri tại hàng đầu, nơi hiểm nguy hơn hết của chiến trận, rồi hãy rút ra xa người, để người bị đánh và chết đi.

And it came to pass, when Joab observed the city, that he assigned Uriah unto a place where he knew that valiant men were.

Vậy, khi Giô-áp vây thành, bèn đặt U-ri tại chỗ đã biết có lính mạnh bạo của thù nghịch gìn giữ.

And the men of the city went out, and fought with Joab: and there fell some of the people of the servants of David; and Uriah the Hittite died also.

Người trong thành kéo ra đánh Giô-áp, có mấy người trong bọn tôi tớ Ða-vít ngã chết. U-ri, người Hê-tít, cũng chết.

Then Joab sent and told David all the things concerning the war;

Giô-áp bèn sai sứ giả đến cùng Ða-vít đặng thuật cho người biết đầu đuôi của sự chinh chiến.

And charged the messenger, saying, When thou hast made an end of telling the matters of the war unto the king,

Và người truyền lịnh cho sứ giả rằng: Khi ngươi đã thuật xong cho vua mọi điều đã xảy ra nơi chiến trận,

And if so be that the king's wrath arise, and he say unto thee, Wherefore approached ye so nigh unto the city when ye did fight? knew ye not that they would shoot from the wall?

nếu vua nổi giận nói cùng ngươi rằng: Cớ sao các ngươi đi tới gần quá đặng hãm thành vậy? Các ngươi há chẳng biết rằng người ta ở trên chót vách thành bắn tên xuống sao?

Who smote Abimelech the son of Jerubbesheth? did not a woman cast a piece of a millstone upon him from the wall, that he died in Thebez? why went ye nigh the wall? then say thou, Thy servant Uriah the Hittite is dead also.

Xưa ai giết A-bi-mê-léc, con trai của Giê-rút-bê-sết? Há chẳng phải một người nữ ở trên chót vách thành ném một thớt cối xuống trên người làm cho người chết tại Tê-bết sao? Vì sao các ngươi đến gần vách thành như vậy? thì bấy giờ ngươi sẽ tiếp rằng: U-ri, kẻ tôi tớ vua, người Hê-tít, cũng chết nữa.

So the messenger went, and came and shewed David all that Joab had sent him for.

Như vậy, sứ giả đi; khi người đến nơi, thuật cho Ða-vít biết mọi điều Giô-áp đã dặn người.

And the messenger said unto David, Surely the men prevailed against us, and came out unto us into the field, and we were upon them even unto the entering of the gate.

Sứ giả tâu cùng Ða-vít rằng: Ban đầu những quân đó mạnh hơn chúng tôi, kéo ra đến ngoài đồng; nhưng chúng tôi đánh đuổi chúng nó đến cửa thành.

And the shooters shot from off the wall upon thy servants; and some of the king's servants be dead, and thy servant Uriah the Hittite is dead also.

Các lính cầm cung ở trên vách thành có bắn những tôi tớ vua, có vài người bị chết; U-ri, người Hê-tít, là tôi tớ vua, cũng chết nữa.

Then David said unto the messenger, Thus shalt thou say unto Joab, Let not this thing displease thee, for the sword devoureth one as well as another: make thy battle more strong against the city, and overthrow it: and encourage thou him.

Ða-vít đáp cùng sứ giả rằng: Ngươi hãy nói cùng Giô-áp: Chớ lấy làm cực lòng quá về điều đó; gươm, khi giết kẻ nầy, khi giết kẻ khác. Hãy rán sức hãm thành và hủy diệt nó đi. Còn ngươi hãy giục người vững lòng bền chí.

And when the wife of Uriah heard that Uriah her husband was dead, she mourned for her husband.

Khi vợ U-ri hay rằng chồng mình đã thác, thì than khóc U-ri.

And when the mourning was past, David sent and fetched her to his house, and she became his wife, and bare him a son. But the thing that David had done displeased the LORD.

Khi đã mãn tang, Ða-vít sai vời nàng vào cung; nàng trở nên vợ người, sanh cho người một con trai. Nhưng điều Ða-vít đã làm đó không đẹp lòng Ðức Giê-hô-va.
