I Samuel 17

Now the Philistines gathered together their armies to battle, and were gathered together at Shochoh, which belongeth to Judah, and pitched between Shochoh and Azekah, in Ephes–dammim.

Dân Phi-li-tin nhóm hiệp các đạo binh mình đặng làm giặc, chúng nó hiệp tại Sô-cô, thuộc về xứ Giu-đa, và đóng trại tại Ê-phê-Ða-mim, giữa Sô-cô và A-xê-ca.

And Saul and the men of Israel were gathered together, and pitched by the valley of Elah, and set the battle in array against the Philistines.

Sau-lơ và người Y-sơ-ra-ên cũng nhóm hiệp, đóng trại tại trũng Ê-la, và dàn trận cùng dân Phi-li-tin.

And the Philistines stood on a mountain on the one side, and Israel stood on a mountain on the other side: and there was a valley between them.

Dân Phi-li-tin đứng trên núi phía nầy, còn Y-sơ-ra-ên đứng trên núi phía kia; trũng phân cách họ.

And there went out a champion out of the camp of the Philistines, named Goliath, of Gath, whose height was six cubits and a span.

Bấy giờ, có một người lực sĩ từ trại quân Phi-li-tin mà ra, tên là Gô-li-át, quê ở Gát; bề cao người sáu thước một gang.

And he had an helmet of brass upon his head, and he was armed with a coat of mail; and the weight of the coat was five thousand shekels of brass.

Người đội mão đồng trên đầu, mặc áo giáp đồng vảy cá, nặng năm ngàn siếc-lơ,

And he had greaves of brass upon his legs, and a target of brass between his shoulders.

và những ủng đồng; sau lưng treo một cây lao đồng.

And the staff of his spear was like a weaver's beam; and his spear's head weighed six hundred shekels of iron: and one bearing a shield went before him.

Cán của cây lao hắn như cây trục của thợ dệt cửi, và mũi của cây lao nầy nặng sáu trăm siếc-lơ. Kẻ vác binh khí hắn đi trước hắn.

And he stood and cried unto the armies of Israel, and said unto them, Why are ye come out to set your battle in array? am not I a Philistine, and ye servants to Saul? choose you a man for you, and let him come down to me.

Vậy, hắn ra đứng kêu la cùng đội ngũ Y-sơ-ra-ên rằng: Cớ sao các ngươi ra bày trận? Ta há chẳng phải là người Phi-li-tin, còn các ngươi, là tôi tớ của Sau-lơ sao? Hãy chọn một người trong các ngươi xuống đấu địch cùng ta.

If he be able to fight with me, and to kill me, then will we be your servants: but if I prevail against him, and kill him, then shall ye be our servants, and serve us.

Nếu khi đấu địch cùng ta, hắn trổi hơn ta và giết ta, thì chúng ta sẽ làm tôi tớ các ngươi; nhưng nếu ta trổi hơn hắn và ta giết hắn, thì các ngươi sẽ làm tôi chúng ta, và hầu việc chúng ta.

And the Philistine said, I defy the armies of Israel this day; give me a man, that we may fight together.

Người Phi-li-tin lại còn nói rằng: Phải, ngày nay ta thách lời nầy cho đội ngũ Y-sơ-ra-ên: Hãy khiến một người ra, đặng chúng ta đấu địch cùng nhau.

When Saul and all Israel heard those words of the Philistine, they were dismayed, and greatly afraid.

Sau-lơ và cả Y-sơ-ra-ên nghe những lời của người Phi-li-tin, thì lấy làm hoảng hồn, sợ hãi lắm.

Now David was the son of that Ephrathite of Beth–lehem–judah, whose name was Jesse; and he had eight sons: and the man went among men for an old man in the days of Saul.

Vả, Ða-vít, là con trai của Y-sai, người Ê-phơ-rát kia, quê ở Bết-lê-hem trong xứ Giu-đa, người có tám con trai; trong đời Sau-lơ, Y-sai đã cao tuổi rồi.

And the three eldest sons of Jesse went and followed Saul to the battle: and the names of his three sons that went to the battle were Eliab the firstborn, and next unto him Abinadab, and the third Shammah.

Ba con trai của Y-sai đã theo Sau-lơ nơi chiến trận: tên ba con trai ấy là: con cả Ê-li-áp, con thứ nhì A-bi-đáp, và con thứ ba Sa-ma.

And David was the youngest: and the three eldest followed Saul.

Ða-vít là con út. Khi ba anh người đã theo Sau-lơ,

But David went and returned from Saul to feed his father's sheep at Beth–lehem.

thì Ða-vít lìa nơi Sau-lơ, trở về Bết-lê-hem đặng chăn chiên của cha mình.

And the Philistine drew near morning and evening, and presented himself forty days.

Người Phi-li-tin đi ra buổi mai và buổi chiều, tỏ mình ra như vậy trong bốn mươi ngày.

And Jesse said unto David his son, Take now for thy brethren an ephah of this parched corn, and these ten loaves, and run to the camp to thy brethren;

Vả, Y-sai nói cùng Ða-vít, con trai mình, mà rằng: Con hãy lấy một ê-pha hột rang và mười ổ bánh nầy, chạy mau đến trại quân đặng đem đưa cho các anh con.

And carry these ten cheeses unto the captain of their thousand, and look how thy brethren fare, and take their pledge.

Con cũng hãy đem mười bánh sữa nầy cho quan tướng cai ngàn quân, thử xem các anh con có mạnh chăng, và con phải đem về cho cha một dấu chi lam chứng về phần chúng nó.

Now Saul, and they, and all the men of Israel, were in the valley of Elah, fighting with the Philistines.

Các anh con ở cùng Sau-lơ và hết thảy người Y-sơ-ra-ên tại trong trũng Ê-la, để đánh giặc cùng dân Phi-li-tin.

And David rose up early in the morning, and left the sheep with a keeper, and took, and went, as Jesse had commanded him; and he came to the trench, as the host was going forth to the fight, and shouted for the battle.

Ngày mai sáng sớm, Ða-vít để chiên cho một người chăn, lấy đồ vật mà đi, như Y-sai đã dặn người. Khi người đã đến đồn, thì đạo binh đi ra đặng dàn trận và reo tiếng chiến tranh.

For Israel and the Philistines had put the battle in array, army against army.

Y-sơ-ra-ên và dân Phi-li-tin dàn trận, hai đạo quân đối nhau.

And David left his carriage in the hand of the keeper of the carriage, and ran into the army, and came and saluted his brethren.

Ða-vít cất gánh nặng mình giao cho người giữ đồ vật, đoạn chạy đến chỗ dàn trận, tới hỏi thăm ba anh mình mạnh giỏi chăng.

And as he talked with them, behold, there came up the champion, the Philistine of Gath, Goliath by name, out of the armies of the Philistines, and spake according to the same words: and David heard them.

Người đương nói chuyện cùng chúng, kìa người lực sĩ Gô-li-át, tức là người Phi-li-tin ở Gát, từ hàng ngũ Phi-li-tin xơm tới, và Ða-vít nghe hắn nói như những lời ngày trước.

And all the men of Israel, when they saw the man, fled from him, and were sore afraid.

Hết thảy người Y-sơ-ra-ên thấy người nầy, đều chạy trốn và run sợ lắm. Mọi người Y-sơ-ra-ên nói:

And the men of Israel said, Have ye seen this man that is come up? surely to defy Israel is he come up: and it shall be, that the man who killeth him, the king will enrich him with great riches, and will give him his daughter, and make his father's house free in Israel.

Các ngươi có thấy người đó xơm tới chăng? Hắn đến đặng sỉ nhục Y-sơ-ra-ên. Nếu ai giết được hắn, thì vua sẽ ban thưởng nhiều của cải, gả con gái mình cho người đó, và miễn xâu thuế cho nhà cha người ấy trong Y-sơ-ra-ên.

And David spake to the men that stood by him, saying, What shall be done to the man that killeth this Philistine, and taketh away the reproach from Israel? for who is this uncircumcised Philistine, that he should defy the armies of the living God?

Ða-vít hỏi những người ở gần mình rằng: Người ta sẽ đãi thể nào cho kẻ giết được người Phi-li-tin nầy, và cất sự sỉ nhục khỏi Y-sơ-ra-ên? Vì người Phi-li-tin nầy, kẻ chẳng chịu phép cắt bì nầy, là ai, mà lại dám sỉ nhục đạo binh của Ðức Chúa Trời hằng sống?

And the people answered him after this manner, saying, So shall it be done to the man that killeth him.

Người ta lấy lời thường nói ấy mà đáp cùng người rằng: Ai giết được hắn thì phần thưởng sẽ là như vậy.

And Eliab his eldest brother heard when he spake unto the men; and Eliab's anger was kindled against David, and he said, Why camest thou down hither? and with whom hast thou left those few sheep in the wilderness? I know thy pride, and the naughtiness of thine heart; for thou art come down that thou mightest see the battle.

Nhưng Ê-li-háp, anh cả người, nghe Ða-vít nói như vậy, nổi giận người mà nói rằng: Cớ sao mày đến đây? Mày bỏ ít con chiên của chúng ta trong đồng vắng cho ai? Tao biết tánh kiêu ngạo và sự độc ác của lòng mày. Ấy đặng xem tranh chiến nên mày mới đến.

And David said, What have I now done? Is there not a cause?

Ða-vít đáp rằng: Vậy, tôi có làm chi đâu? Ấy chỉ là một câu hỏi thôi?

And he turned from him toward another, and spake after the same manner: and the people answered him again after the former manner.

Người dan xa anh mình, lặp hỏi những người khác cũng một câu ấy, thì người ta đáp như lần thứ nhứt.

And when the words were heard which David spake, they rehearsed them before Saul: and he sent for him.

Có người nghe các lời Ða-vít nói, bèn thuật lại cho Sau-lơ hay; Sau-lơ đòi người đến.

And David said to Saul, Let no man's heart fail because of him; thy servant will go and fight with this Philistine.

Ða-vít thưa với Sau-lơ rằng: Xin chớ ai ngã lòng vì cớ người Phi-li-tin kia! Kẻ tôi tớ vua sẽ đi đấu địch cùng hắn.

And Saul said to David, Thou art not able to go against this Philistine to fight with him: for thou art but a youth, and he a man of war from his youth.

Sau-lơ đáp cùng Ða-vít rằng: Ngươi chẳng thế đi đấu địch cùng người Phi-li-tin kia, vì ngươi chỉ là một đứa con trẻ, còn hắn là một tay chiến sĩ từ thuở còn thơ.

And David said unto Saul, Thy servant kept his father's sheep, and there came a lion, and a bear, and took a lamb out of the flock:

Ða-vít tâu cùng Sau-lơ rằng: Khi tôi tớ vua chăn chiên của cha mình, hễ có sư tử hay là con gấu đến tha một con chiên của bầy.

And I went out after him, and smote him, and delivered it out of his mouth: and when he arose against me, I caught him by his beard, and smote him, and slew him.

thì tôi đuổi theo, đánh nó, rứt con chiên khỏi miệng nó; hễ nó cất lên cự tôi, tôi nắm râu nó, đánh và giết nó đi.

Thy servant slew both the lion and the bear: and this uncircumcised Philistine shall be as one of them, seeing he hath defied the armies of the living God.

Tôi tớ vua đã đánh chết con sư tử và con gấu, vậy thì người Phi-li-tin không chịu phép cắt bì kia cũng sẽ đồng số phận với chúng nó; vì hắn sỉ nhục các đạo binh của Ðức Chúa Trời hằng sống.

David said moreover, The LORD that delivered me out of the paw of the lion, and out of the paw of the bear, he will deliver me out of the hand of this Philistine. And Saul said unto David, Go, and the LORD be with thee.

Ða-vít lại nói: Ðức Giê-hô-va đã giải cứu tôi khỏi vấu sư tử và khỏi cẳng gấu, ắt sẽ giải cứu tôi khỏi tay người Phi-li-tin kia. Sau-lơ đáp rằng: Hãy đi, nguyện Ðức Giê-hô-va ở cùng ngươi!

And Saul armed David with his armour, and he put an helmet of brass upon his head; also he armed him with a coat of mail.

Sau-lơ lấy áo chiến mình mặc cho Ða-vít, đội cái mão đồng lên đầu người, và mặc áo giáo cho người.

And David girded his sword upon his armour, and he assayed to go; for he had not proved it. And David said unto Saul, I cannot go with these; for I have not proved them. And David put them off him.

Ða-vít đeo gươm của Sau-lơ ở trên áo chiến và tập đi thử, vì không có thói quen. Nhưng người nói cùng Sau-lơ rằng: Tôi không thế mang khí giới nầy mà đi được; vì tôi không có thói quen. Ða-vít bèn cổi áo ấy ra,

And he took his staff in his hand, and chose him five smooth stones out of the brook, and put them in a shepherd's bag which he had, even in a scrip; and his sling was in his hand: and he drew near to the Philistine.

cầm một cây gậy, lựa dưới khe năm cục đá bóng láng, để trong cái túi chăn chiên mình vẫn có, và cái trành ném đá ở nơi tay, rồi xơm tới người Phi-li-tin.

And the Philistine came on and drew near unto David; and the man that bare the shield went before him.

Người Phi-li-tin cũng xơm tới, đến gần Ða-vít, có kẻ vác binh khí đi trước.

And when the Philistine looked about, and saw David, he disdained him: for he was but a youth, and ruddy, and of a fair countenance.

Người Phi-li-tin xem Ða-vít, thấy người còn trẻ, nước da hồng hồng, mặt đẹp đẽ, thì khinh người.

And the Philistine said unto David, Am I a dog, that thou comest to me with staves? And the Philistine cursed David by his gods.

Người Phi-li-tin nói cùng Ða-vít rằng: Ta há là một con chó nên người cầm gậy đến cùng ta? Người Phi-li-tin bắt danh các thần mình mà rủa sả Ða-vít,

And the Philistine said to David, Come to me, and I will give thy flesh unto the fowls of the air, and to the beasts of the field.

và tiếp rằng: Hãy lại đây, ta sẽ ban thịt ngươi cho chim trời và thú đồng.

Then said David to the Philistine, Thou comest to me with a sword, and with a spear, and with a shield: but I come to thee in the name of the LORD of hosts, the God of the armies of Israel, whom thou hast defied.

Ða-vít đáp cùng người Phi-li-tin rằng: Ngươi cầm gươm, giáo, lao mà đến cùng ta; còn ta, ta nhơn danh Ðức Giê-hô-va vạn binh mà đến, tức là Ðức Chúa Trời của đạo binh Y-sơ-ra-ên, mà ngươi đã sỉ nhục.

This day will the LORD deliver thee into mine hand; and I will smite thee, and take thine head from thee; and I will give the carcases of the host of the Philistines this day unto the fowls of the air, and to the wild beasts of the earth; that all the earth may know that there is a God in Israel.

Ngày nay Ðức Giê-hô-va sẽ phó ngươi vào tay ta, ta sẽ giết ngươi, cắt đầu ngươi, và ngày nay ban thây của đạo binh Phi-li-tin cho chim trời và thú vật của đất.

And all this assembly shall know that the LORD saveth not with sword and spear: for the battle is the LORD'S, and he will give you into our hands.

Khắp thế gian sẽ biết rằng Y-sơ-ra-ên có một Ðức Chúa Trời; và quân lính nầy sẽ thấy rằng Ðức Giê-hô-va không giải cứu bằng gươm, hoặc bằng giáo; vì Ðức Giê-hô-va là Chúa của chiến trận, và Ngài sẽ phó các ngươi vào tay chúng ta.

And it came to pass, when the Philistine arose, and came and drew nigh to meet David, that David hasted, and ran toward the army to meet the Philistine.

Xảy khi người Phi-li-tin đứng dậy, xơm tới đón Ða-vít, Ða-vít vội vàng chạy về hướng hàng trận quân nghịch đặng đón người Phi-li-tin.

And David put his hand in his bag, and took thence a stone, and slang it, and smote the Philistine in his forehead, that the stone sunk into his forehead; and he fell upon his face to the earth.

Ða-vít thò tay vào túi mình, lấy một cục đá, ném nó bằng trành, trúng nơi trán người Phi-li-tin. Cục đá lọt thấu trong trán, Gô-li-át té úp mặt xuống đất.

So David prevailed over the Philistine with a sling and with a stone, and smote the Philistine, and slew him; but there was no sword in the hand of David.

Như vậy Ða-vít thắng được người Phi-li-tin bằng cái trành nắm đá và cục đá, đánh chết hắn mà không có gươm nơi tay.

Therefore David ran, and stood upon the Philistine, and took his sword, and drew it out of the sheath thereof, and slew him, and cut off his head therewith. And when the Philistines saw their champion was dead, they fled.

Ðoạn, Ða-vít chạy lại, xông vào mình người Phi-li-tin, lấy gươm của hắn và rút ra khỏi vỏ, giết hắn, và cắt đầu đi. Dân Phi-li-tin thấy kẻ lực sĩ mình đã chết, thì chạy trốn.

And the men of Israel and of Judah arose, and shouted, and pursued the Philistines, until thou come to the valley, and to the gates of Ekron. And the wounded of the Philistines fell down by the way to Shaaraim, even unto Gath, and unto Ekron.

Bấy giờ, người Y-sơ-ra-ên và Giu-đa dấy lên, hò hét, đuổi theo dân Phi-li-tin cho đến cửa thành Gát và Éc-rôn; người Phi-li-tin bị thương ngã chết đầy đường Sa-ra-gim cho đến Gát và Éc-rôn.

And the children of Israel returned from chasing after the Philistines, and they spoiled their tents.

Dân Y-sơ-ra-ên, sau khi đã rượt đuổi dân Phi-li-tin rồi, thì trở về cướp phá trại quân chúng nó.

And David took the head of the Philistine, and brought it to Jerusalem; but he put his armour in his tent.

Ða-vít lấy thủ cấp của người Phi-li-tin đem đến Giê-ru-sa-lem; nhưng để binh khí Gô-li-át lại trong trại mình.

And when Saul saw David go forth against the Philistine, he said unto Abner, the captain of the host, Abner, whose son is this youth? And Abner said, As thy soul liveth, O king, I cannot tell.

Sau-lơ thấy Ða-vít đón đánh người Phi-li-tin, thì có hỏi quan tổng binh Áp-ne, rằng: Hỡi Áp-ne, người trai trẻ đó là con trai của ai? Áp-ne thưa rằng: Ôi vua! tôi xin chỉ linh hồn vua mà thề, tôi chẳng biết.

And the king said, Enquire thou whose son the stripling is.

Vua nói cùng người rằng: Hãy hỏi thăm gã trai trẻ ấy là con của ai.

And as David returned from the slaughter of the Philistine, Abner took him, and brought him before Saul with the head of the Philistine in his hand.

Khi Ða-vít đã giết người Phi-li-tin trở về, thì Áp-ne rước người, dẫn đến trước mặt Sau-lơ. Ða-vít đương xách thủ cấp của người Phi-li-tin nơi tay.

And Saul said to him, Whose son art thou, thou young man? And David answered, I am the son of thy servant Jesse the Beth–lehemite.

Sau-lơ nói cùng người rằng: Hỡi gã trai trẻ, ngươi là con ai? Ða-vít thưa rằng: Tôi là con Y-sai, tôi tớ của vua, ở tại Bết-lê-hem.
