Matthew 16

The Pharisees also with the Sadducees came, and tempting desired him that he would shew them a sign from heaven.

ایک دن فریسی اور صدوقی عیسیٰ کے پاس آئے۔ اُسے پرکھنے کے لئے اُنہوں نے مطالبہ کیا کہ وہ اُنہیں آسمان کی طرف سے کوئی الٰہی نشان دکھائے تاکہ اُس کا اختیار ثابت ہو جائے۔

He answered and said unto them, When it is evening, ye say, It will be fair weather: for the sky is red.

لیکن اُس نے جواب دیا، ”شام کو تم کہتے ہو، ’کل موسم صاف ہو گا کیونکہ آسمان سرخ نظر آتا ہے۔‘

And in the morning, It will be foul weather to day: for the sky is red and lowring. O ye hypocrites, ye can discern the face of the sky; but can ye not discern the signs of the times?

اور صبح کے وقت کہتے ہو، ’آج طوفان ہو گا کیونکہ آسمان سرخ ہے اور بادل چھائے ہوئے ہیں۔‘ غرض تم آسمان کی حالت پر غور کر کے صحیح نتیجہ نکال لیتے ہو، لیکن زمانوں کی علامتوں پر غور کر کے صحیح نتیجے تک پہنچنا تمہارے بس کی بات نہیں ہے۔

A wicked and adulterous generation seeketh after a sign; and there shall no sign be given unto it, but the sign of the prophet Jonas. And he left them, and departed.

صرف شریر اور زناکار نسل الٰہی نشان کا تقاضا کرتی ہے۔ لیکن اُسے کوئی بھی الٰہی نشان پیش نہیں کیا جائے گا سوائے یونس نبی کے نشان کے۔“ یہ کہہ کر عیسیٰ اُنہیں چھوڑ کر چلا گیا۔

And when his disciples were come to the other side, they had forgotten to take bread.

جھیل کو پار کرتے وقت شاگرد اپنے ساتھ کھانا لانا بھول گئے تھے۔

Then Jesus said unto them, Take heed and beware of the leaven of the Pharisees and of the Sadducees.

عیسیٰ نے اُن سے کہا، ”خبردار، فریسیوں اور صدوقیوں کے خمیر سے ہوشیار رہنا۔“

And they reasoned among themselves, saying, It is because we have taken no bread.

شاگرد آپس میں بحث کرنے لگے، ”وہ اِس لئے کہہ رہے ہوں گے کہ ہم کھانا ساتھ نہیں لائے۔“

Which when Jesus perceived, he said unto them, O ye of little faith, why reason ye among yourselves, because ye have brought no bread?

عیسیٰ کو معلوم ہوا کہ وہ کیا سوچ رہے ہیں۔ اُس نے کہا، ”تم آپس میں کیوں بحث کر رہے ہو کہ ہمارے پاس روٹی نہیں ہے؟

Do ye not yet understand, neither remember the five loaves of the five thousand, and how many baskets ye took up?

کیا تم ابھی تک نہیں سمجھتے؟ کیا تمہیں یاد نہیں کہ مَیں نے پانچ روٹیاں لے کر 5,000 آدمیوں کو کھانا کھلا دیا اور کہ تم نے بچے ہوئے ٹکڑوں کے کتنے ٹوکرے اُٹھائے تھے؟

Neither the seven loaves of the four thousand, and how many baskets ye took up?

یا کیا تم بھول گئے ہو کہ مَیں نے سات روٹیاں لے کر 4,000 آدمیوں کو کھانا کھلایا اور کہ تم نے بچے ہوئے ٹکڑوں کے کتنے ٹوکرے اُٹھائے تھے؟

How is it that ye do not understand that I spake it not to you concerning bread, that ye should beware of the leaven of the Pharisees and of the Sadducees?

تم کیوں نہیں سمجھتے کہ مَیں تم سے کھانے کی بات نہیں کر رہا؟ سنو میری بات! فریسیوں اور صدوقیوں کے خمیر سے ہوشیار رہو!“

Then understood they how that he bade them not beware of the leaven of bread, but of the doctrine of the Pharisees and of the Sadducees.

پھر اُنہیں سمجھ آئی کہ عیسیٰ اُنہیں روٹی کے خمیر سے آگاہ نہیں کر رہا تھا بلکہ فریسیوں اور صدوقیوں کی تعلیم سے۔

When Jesus came into the coasts of Caesarea Philippi, he asked his disciples, saying, Whom do men say that I the Son of man am?

جب عیسیٰ قیصریہ فلپی کے علاقے میں پہنچا تو اُس نے شاگردوں سے پوچھا، ”ابنِ آدم لوگوں کے نزدیک کون ہے؟“

And they said, Some say that thou art John the Baptist: some, Elias; and others, Jeremias, or one of the prophets.

اُنہوں نے جواب دیا، ”کچھ کہتے ہیں یحییٰ بپتسمہ دینے والا، کچھ یہ کہ آپ الیاس نبی ہیں۔ کچھ یہ بھی کہتے ہیں کہ یرمیاہ یا نبیوں میں سے ایک۔“

He saith unto them, But whom say ye that I am?

اُس نے پوچھا، ”لیکن تمہارے نزدیک مَیں کون ہوں؟“

And Simon Peter answered and said, Thou art the Christ, the Son of the living God.

پطرس نے جواب دیا، ”آپ زندہ خدا کے فرزند مسیح ہیں۔“

And Jesus answered and said unto him, Blessed art thou, Simon Bar–jona: for flesh and blood hath not revealed it unto thee, but my Father which is in heaven.

عیسیٰ نے کہا، ”شمعون بن یونس، تُو مبارک ہے، کیونکہ کسی انسان نے تجھ پر یہ ظاہر نہیں کیا بلکہ میرے آسمانی باپ نے۔

And I say also unto thee, That thou art Peter, and upon this rock I will build my church; and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it.

مَیں تجھے یہ بھی بتاتا ہوں کہ تُو پطرس یعنی پتھرہے، اور اِسی پتھر پر مَیں اپنی جماعت کو تعمیر کروں گا، ایسی جماعت جس پر پاتال کے دروازے بھی غالب نہیں آئیں گے۔

And I will give unto thee the keys of the kingdom of heaven: and whatsoever thou shalt bind on earth shall be bound in heaven: and whatsoever thou shalt loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven.

مَیں تجھے آسمان کی بادشاہی کی کنجیاں دے دوں گا۔ جو کچھ تُو زمین پر باندھے گا وہ آسمان پر بھی بندھے گا۔ اور جو کچھ تُو زمین پر کھولے گا وہ آسمان پر بھی کھلے گا۔“

Then charged he his disciples that they should tell no man that he was Jesus the Christ.

پھر عیسیٰ نے اپنے شاگردوں کو حکم دیا، ”کسی کو بھی نہ بتاؤ کہ مَیں مسیح ہوں۔“

From that time forth began Jesus to shew unto his disciples, how that he must go unto Jerusalem, and suffer many things of the elders and chief priests and scribes, and be killed, and be raised again the third day.

اُس وقت سے عیسیٰ اپنے شاگردوں پر واضح کرنے لگا، ”لازم ہے کہ مَیں یروشلم جا کر قوم کے بزرگوں، راہنما اماموں اور شریعت کے علما کے ہاتھوں بہت دُکھ اُٹھاؤں۔ مجھے قتل کیا جائے گا، لیکن تیسرے دن مَیں جی اُٹھوں گا۔“

Then Peter took him, and began to rebuke him, saying, Be it far from thee, Lord: this shall not be unto thee.

اِس پر پطرس اُسے ایک طرف لے جا کر سمجھانے لگا۔ ”اے خداوند، اللہ نہ کرے کہ یہ کبھی بھی آپ کے ساتھ ہو۔“

But he turned, and said unto Peter, Get thee behind me, Satan: thou art an offence unto me: for thou savourest not the things that be of God, but those that be of men.

عیسیٰ نے مُڑ کر پطرس سے کہا، ”شیطان، میرے سامنے سے ہٹ جا! تُو میرے لئے ٹھوکر کا باعث ہے، کیونکہ تُو اللہ کی سوچ نہیں رکھتا بلکہ انسان کی۔“

Then said Jesus unto his disciples, If any man will come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow me.

پھر عیسیٰ نے اپنے شاگردوں سے کہا، ”جو میرے پیچھے آنا چاہے وہ اپنے آپ کا انکار کرے اور اپنی صلیب اُٹھا کر میرے پیچھے ہو لے۔

For whosoever will save his life shall lose it: and whosoever will lose his life for my sake shall find it.

کیونکہ جو اپنی جان کو بچائے رکھنا چاہے وہ اُسے کھو دے گا۔ لیکن جو میری خاطر اپنی جان کھو دے وہی اُسے پا لے گا۔

For what is a man profited, if he shall gain the whole world, and lose his own soul? or what shall a man give in exchange for his soul?

کیا فائدہ ہے اگر کسی کو پوری دنیا حاصل ہو جائے، لیکن وہ اپنی جان سے محروم ہو جائے؟ انسان اپنی جان کے بدلے کیا دے سکتا ہے؟

For the Son of man shall come in the glory of his Father with his angels; and then he shall reward every man according to his works.

کیونکہ ابنِ آدم اپنے باپ کے جلال میں اپنے فرشتوں کے ساتھ آئے گا، اور اُس وقت وہ ہر ایک کو اُس کے کام کا بدلہ دے گا۔

Verily I say unto you, There be some standing here, which shall not taste of death, till they see the Son of man coming in his kingdom.

مَیں تمہیں سچ بتاتا ہوں، یہاں کچھ ایسے لوگ کھڑے ہیں جو مرنے سے پہلے ہی ابنِ آدم کو اُس کی بادشاہی میں آتے ہوئے دیکھیں گے۔“
