John 11

Now a certain man was sick, named Lazarus, of Bethany, the town of Mary and her sister Martha.

اُن دنوں میں ایک آدمی بیمار پڑ گیا جس کا نام لعزر تھا۔ وہ اپنی بہنوں مریم اور مرتھا کے ساتھ بیت عنیاہ میں رہتا تھا۔

(It was that Mary which anointed the Lord with ointment, and wiped his feet with her hair, whose brother Lazarus was sick.)

یہ وہی مریم تھی جس نے بعد میں خداوند پر خوشبو اُنڈیل کر اُس کے پاؤں اپنے بالوں سے خشک کئے تھے۔ اُسی کا بھائی لعزر بیمار تھا۔

Therefore his sisters sent unto him, saying, Lord, behold, he whom thou lovest is sick.

چنانچہ بہنوں نے عیسیٰ کو اطلاع دی، ”خداوند، جسے آپ پیار کرتے ہیں وہ بیمار ہے۔“

When Jesus heard that, he said, This sickness is not unto death, but for the glory of God, that the Son of God might be glorified thereby.

جب عیسیٰ کو یہ خبر ملی تو اُس نے کہا، ”اِس بیماری کا انجام موت نہیں ہے، بلکہ یہ اللہ کے جلال کے واسطے ہوا ہے، تاکہ اِس سے اللہ کے فرزند کو جلال ملے۔“

Now Jesus loved Martha, and her sister, and Lazarus.

عیسیٰ مرتھا، مریم اور لعزر سے محبت رکھتا تھا۔

When he had heard therefore that he was sick, he abode two days still in the same place where he was.

توبھی وہ لعزر کے بارے میں اطلاع ملنے کے بعد دو دن اَور وہیں ٹھہرا۔

Then after that saith he to his disciples, Let us go into Judæa again.

پھر اُس نے اپنے شاگردوں سے بات کی، ”آؤ، ہم دوبارہ یہودیہ چلے جائیں۔“

His disciples say unto him, Master, the Jews of late sought to stone thee; and goest thou thither again?

شاگردوں نے اعتراض کیا، ”اُستاد، ابھی ابھی وہاں کے یہودی آپ کو سنگسار کرنے کی کوشش کر رہے تھے، پھر بھی آپ واپس جانا چاہتے ہیں؟“

Jesus answered, Are there not twelve hours in the day? If any man walk in the day, he stumbleth not, because he seeth the light of this world.

عیسیٰ نے جواب دیا، ”کیا دن میں روشنی کے بارہ گھنٹے نہیں ہوتے؟ جو شخص دن کے وقت چلتا پھرتا ہے وہ کسی بھی چیز سے نہیں ٹکرائے گا، کیونکہ وہ اِس دنیا کی روشنی کے ذریعے دیکھ سکتا ہے۔

But if a man walk in the night, he stumbleth, because there is no light in him.

لیکن جو رات کے وقت چلتا ہے وہ چیزوں سے ٹکرا جاتا ہے، کیونکہ اُس کے پاس روشنی نہیں ہے۔“

These things said he: and after that he saith unto them, Our friend Lazarus sleepeth; but I go, that I may awake him out of sleep.

پھر اُس نے کہا، ”ہمارا دوست لعزر سو گیا ہے۔ لیکن مَیں جا کر اُسے جگا دوں گا۔“

Then said his disciples, Lord, if he sleep, he shall do well.

شاگردوں نے کہا، ”خداوند، اگر وہ سو رہا ہے تو وہ بچ جائے گا۔“

Howbeit Jesus spake of his death: but they thought that he had spoken of taking of rest in sleep.

اُن کا خیال تھا کہ عیسیٰ لعزر کی فطری نیند کا ذکر کر رہا ہے جبکہ حقیقت میں وہ اُس کی موت کی طرف اشارہ کر رہا تھا۔

Then said Jesus unto them plainly, Lazarus is dead.

اِس لئے اُس نے اُنہیں صاف بتا دیا، ”لعزر وفات پا گیا ہے۔

And I am glad for your sakes that I was not there, to the intent ye may believe; nevertheless let us go unto him.

اور تمہاری خاطر مَیں خوش ہوں کہ مَیں اُس کے مرتے وقت وہاں نہیں تھا، کیونکہ اب تم ایمان لاؤ گے۔ آؤ، ہم اُس کے پاس جائیں۔“

Then said Thomas, which is called Didymus, unto his fellowdisciples, Let us also go, that we may die with him.

توما نے جس کا لقب جُڑواں تھا اپنے ساتھی شاگردوں سے کہا، ”چلو، ہم بھی وہاں جا کر اُس کے ساتھ مر جائیں۔“

Then when Jesus came, he found that he had lain in the grave four days already.

وہاں پہنچ کر عیسیٰ کو معلوم ہوا کہ لعزر کو قبر میں رکھے چار دن ہو گئے ہیں۔

Now Bethany was nigh unto Jerusalem, about fifteen furlongs off:

بیت عنیاہ کا یروشلم سے فاصلہ تین کلو میٹر سے کم تھا،

And many of the Jews came to Martha and Mary, to comfort them concerning their brother.

اور بہت سے یہودی مرتھا اور مریم کو اُن کے بھائی کے بارے میں تسلی دینے کے لئے آئے ہوئے تھے۔

Then Martha, as soon as she heard that Jesus was coming, went and met him: but Mary sat still in the house.

یہ سن کر کہ عیسیٰ آ رہا ہے مرتھا اُسے ملنے گئی۔ لیکن مریم گھر میں بیٹھی رہی۔

Then said Martha unto Jesus, Lord, if thou hadst been here, my brother had not died.

مرتھا نے کہا، ”خداوند، اگر آپ یہاں ہوتے تو میرا بھائی نہ مرتا۔

But I know, that even now, whatsoever thou wilt ask of God, God will give it thee.

لیکن مَیں جانتی ہوں کہ اب بھی اللہ آپ کو جو بھی مانگیں گے دے گا۔“

Jesus saith unto her, Thy brother shall rise again.

عیسیٰ نے اُسے بتایا، ”تیرا بھائی جی اُٹھے گا۔“

Martha saith unto him, I know that he shall rise again in the resurrection at the last day.

مرتھا نے جواب دیا، ”جی، مجھے معلوم ہے کہ وہ قیامت کے دن جی اُٹھے گا، جب سب جی اُٹھیں گے۔“

Jesus said unto her, I am the resurrection, and the life: he that believeth in me, though he were dead, yet shall he live:

عیسیٰ نے اُسے بتایا، ”قیامت اور زندگی تو مَیں ہوں۔ جو مجھ پر ایمان رکھے وہ زندہ رہے گا، چاہے وہ مر بھی جائے۔

And whosoever liveth and believeth in me shall never die. Believest thou this?

اور جو زندہ ہے اور مجھ پر ایمان رکھتا ہے وہ کبھی نہیں مرے گا۔ مرتھا، کیا تجھے اِس بات کا یقین ہے؟“

She saith unto him, Yea, Lord: I believe that thou art the Christ, the Son of God, which should come into the world.

مرتھا نے جواب دیا، ”جی خداوند، مَیں ایمان رکھتی ہوں کہ آپ خدا کے فرزند مسیح ہیں، جسے دنیا میں آنا تھا۔“

And when she had so said, she went her way, and called Mary her sister secretly, saying, The Master is come, and calleth for thee.

یہ کہہ کر مرتھا واپس چلی گئی اور چپکے سے مریم کو بُلایا، ”اُستاد آ گئے ہیں، وہ تجھے بُلا رہے ہیں۔“

As soon as she heard that, she arose quickly, and came unto him.

یہ سنتے ہی مریم اُٹھ کر عیسیٰ کے پاس گئی۔

Now Jesus was not yet come into the town, but was in that place where Martha met him.

وہ ابھی گاؤں کے باہر اُسی جگہ ٹھہرا تھا جہاں اُس کی ملاقات مرتھا سے ہوئی تھی۔

The Jews then which were with her in the house, and comforted her, when they saw Mary, that she rose up hastily and went out, followed her, saying, She goeth unto the grave to weep there.

جو یہودی گھر میں مریم کے ساتھ بیٹھے اُسے تسلی دے رہے تھے، جب اُنہوں نے دیکھا کہ وہ جلدی سے اُٹھ کر نکل گئی ہے تو وہ اُس کے پیچھے ہو لئے۔ کیونکہ وہ سمجھ رہے تھے کہ وہ ماتم کرنے کے لئے اپنے بھائی کی قبر پر جا رہی ہے۔

Then when Mary was come where Jesus was, and saw him, she fell down at his feet, saying unto him, Lord, if thou hadst been here, my brother had not died.

مریم عیسیٰ کے پاس پہنچ گئی۔ اُسے دیکھتے ہی وہ اُس کے پاؤں میں گر گئی اور کہنے لگی، ”خداوند، اگر آپ یہاں ہوتے تو میرا بھائی نہ مرتا۔“

When Jesus therefore saw her weeping, and the Jews also weeping which came with her, he groaned in the spirit, and was troubled,

جب عیسیٰ نے مریم اور اُس کے ساتھیوں کو روتے دیکھا تو اُسے بڑی رنجش ہوئی۔ مضطرب حالت میں

And said, Where have ye laid him? They said unto him, Lord, come and see.

اُس نے پوچھا، ”تم نے اُسے کہاں رکھا ہے؟“ اُنہوں نے جواب دیا، ”آئیں خداوند، اور دیکھ لیں۔“

Jesus wept.

عیسیٰ رو پڑا۔

Then said the Jews, Behold how he loved him!

یہودیوں نے کہا، ”دیکھو، وہ اُسے کتنا عزیز تھا۔“

And some of them said, Could not this man, which opened the eyes of the blind, have caused that even this man should not have died?

لیکن اُن میں سے بعض نے کہا، ”اِس آدمی نے اندھے کو شفا دی۔ کیا یہ لعزر کو مرنے سے نہیں بچا سکتا تھا؟“

Jesus therefore again groaning in himself cometh to the grave. It was a cave, and a stone lay upon it.

پھر عیسیٰ دوبارہ نہایت رنجیدہ ہو کر قبر پر آیا۔ قبر ایک غار تھی جس کے منہ پر پتھر رکھا گیا تھا۔

Jesus said, Take ye away the stone. Martha, the sister of him that was dead, saith unto him, Lord, by this time he stinketh: for he hath been dead four days.

عیسیٰ نے کہا، ”پتھر کو ہٹا دو۔“ لیکن مرحوم کی بہن مرتھا نے اعتراض کیا، ”خداوند، بدبو آئے گی، کیونکہ اُسے یہاں پڑے چار دن ہو گئے ہیں۔“

Jesus saith unto her, Said I not unto thee, that, if thou wouldest believe, thou shouldest see the glory of God?

عیسیٰ نے اُس سے کہا، ”کیا مَیں نے تجھے نہیں بتایا کہ اگر تُو ایمان رکھے تو اللہ کا جلال دیکھے گی؟“

Then they took away the stone from the place where the dead was laid. And Jesus lifted up his eyes, and said, Father, I thank thee that thou hast heard me.

چنانچہ اُنہوں نے پتھر کو ہٹا دیا۔ پھر عیسیٰ نے اپنی نظر اُٹھا کر کہا، ”اے باپ، مَیں تیرا شکر کرتا ہوں کہ تُو نے میری سن لی ہے۔

And I knew that thou hearest me always: but because of the people which stand by I said it, that they may believe that thou hast sent me.

مَیں تو جانتا ہوں کہ تُو ہمیشہ میری سنتا ہے۔ لیکن مَیں نے یہ بات پاس کھڑے لوگوں کی خاطر کی، تاکہ وہ ایمان لائیں کہ تُو نے مجھے بھیجا ہے۔“

And when he thus had spoken, he cried with a loud voice, Lazarus, come forth.

پھر عیسیٰ زور سے پکار اُٹھا، ”لعزر، نکل آ!“

And he that was dead came forth, bound hand and foot with graveclothes: and his face was bound about with a napkin. Jesus saith unto them, Loose him, and let him go.

اور مُردہ نکل آیا۔ ابھی تک اُس کے ہاتھ اور پاؤں پٹیوں سے بندھے ہوئے تھے جبکہ اُس کا چہرہ کپڑے میں لپٹا ہوا تھا۔ عیسیٰ نے اُن سے کہا، ”اِس کے کفن کو کھول کر اِسے جانے دو۔“

Then many of the Jews which came to Mary, and had seen the things which Jesus did, believed on him.

اُن یہودیوں میں سے جو مریم کے پاس آئے تھے بہت سے عیسیٰ پر ایمان لائے جب اُنہوں نے وہ دیکھا جو اُس نے کیا۔

But some of them went their ways to the Pharisees, and told them what things Jesus had done.

لیکن بعض فریسیوں کے پاس گئے اور اُنہیں بتایا کہ عیسیٰ نے کیا کِیا ہے۔

Then gathered the chief priests and the Pharisees a council, and said, What do we? for this man doeth many miracles.

تب راہنما اماموں اور فریسیوں نے یہودی عدالتِ عالیہ کا اجلاس منعقد کیا۔ اُنہوں نے ایک دوسرے سے پوچھا، ”ہم کیا کر رہے ہیں؟ یہ آدمی بہت سے الٰہی نشان دکھا رہا ہے۔

If we let him thus alone, all men will believe on him: and the Romans shall come and take away both our place and nation.

اگر ہم اُسے کھلا چھوڑیں تو آخرکار سب اُس پر ایمان لے آئیں گے۔ پھر رومی آ کر ہمارے بیت المُقدّس اور ہمارے ملک کو تباہ کر دیں گے۔“

And one of them, named Caiaphas, being the high priest that same year, said unto them, Ye know nothing at all,

اُن میں سے ایک کائفا تھا جو اُس سال امامِ اعظم تھا۔ اُس نے کہا، ”آپ کچھ نہیں سمجھتے

Nor consider that it is expedient for us, that one man should die for the people, and that the whole nation perish not.

اور اِس کا خیال بھی نہیں کرتے کہ اِس سے پہلے کہ پوری قوم ہلاک ہو جائے بہتر یہ ہے کہ ایک آدمی اُمّت کے لئے مر جائے۔“

And this spake he not of himself: but being high priest that year, he prophesied that Jesus should die for that nation;

اُس نے یہ بات اپنی طرف سے نہیں کی تھی۔ اُس سال کے امامِ اعظم کی حیثیت سے ہی اُس نے یہ پیش گوئی کی کہ عیسیٰ یہودی قوم کے لئے مرے گا۔

And not for that nation only, but that also he should gather together in one the children of God that were scattered abroad.

اور نہ صرف اِس کے لئے بلکہ اللہ کے بکھرے ہوئے فرزندوں کو جمع کر کے ایک کرنے کے لئے بھی۔

Then from that day forth they took counsel together for to put him to death.

اُس دن سے اُنہوں نے عیسیٰ کو قتل کرنے کا ارادہ کر لیا۔

Jesus therefore walked no more openly among the Jews; but went thence unto a country near to the wilderness, into a city called Ephraim, and there continued with his disciples.

اِس لئے اُس نے اب سے علانیہ یہودیوں کے درمیان وقت نہ گزارا، بلکہ اُس جگہ کو چھوڑ کر ریگستان کے قریب ایک علاقے میں گیا۔ وہاں وہ اپنے شاگردوں سمیت ایک گاؤں بنام افرائیم میں رہنے لگا۔

And the Jews' passover was nigh at hand: and many went out of the country up to Jerusalem before the passover, to purify themselves.

پھر یہودیوں کی عیدِ فسح قریب آ گئی۔ دیہات سے بہت سے لوگ اپنے آپ کو پاک کروانے کے لئے عید سے پہلے پہلے یروشلم پہنچے۔

Then sought they for Jesus, and spake among themselves, as they stood in the temple, What think ye, that he will not come to the feast?

وہاں وہ عیسیٰ کا پتا کرتے اور بیت المُقدّس میں کھڑے آپس میں بات کرتے رہے، ”کیا خیال ہے؟ کیا وہ تہوار پر نہیں آئے گا؟“

Now both the chief priests and the Pharisees had given a commandment, that, if any man knew where he were, he should shew it, that they might take him.

لیکن راہنما اماموں اور فریسیوں نے حکم دیا تھا، ”اگر کسی کو معلوم ہو جائے کہ عیسیٰ کہاں ہے تو وہ اطلاع دے تاکہ ہم اُسے گرفتار کر لیں۔“
