II Samuel 11

And it came to pass, after the year was expired, at the time when kings go forth to battle, that David sent Joab, and his servants with him, and all Israel; and they destroyed the children of Ammon, and besieged Rabbah. But David tarried still at Jerusalem.

Året efter, ved den tid da kongene pleier å dra ut i krig, sendte David Joab avsted med sine tjenere og hele Israel, og de herjet Ammons barns land og kringsatte Rabba. Men David blev i Jerusalem.

And it came to pass in an eveningtide, that David arose from off his bed, and walked upon the roof of the king's house: and from the roof he saw a woman washing herself; and the woman was very beautiful to look upon.

Så hendte det en aften at David stod op fra sitt leie og gikk omkring på kongehusets tak; da fikk han fra taket se en kvinne som badet sig; og kvinnen var meget fager av utseende.

And David sent and enquired after the woman. And one said, Is not this Bath–sheba, the daughter of Eliam, the wife of Uriah the Hittite?

David sendte bud og spurte sig for om kvinnen, og de sa: Det er jo Batseba, datter av Eliam og hetitten Urias hustru.

And David sent messengers, and took her; and she came in unto him, and he lay with her; for she was purified from her uncleanness: and she returned unto her house.

Da sendte David bud og lot henne hente; hun kom til ham, og han lå hos henne like efterat hun hadde renset sig fra sin urenhet; så gikk hun hjem igjen.

And the woman conceived, and sent and told David, and said, I am with child.

Kvinnen blev fruktsommelig; og hun sendte bud om det til David og lot si: Jeg er fruktsommelig.

And David sent to Joab, saying, Send me Uriah the Hittite. And Joab sent Uriah to David.

Da sendte David det bud til Joab: Send hetitten Uria til mig! Og Joab sendte Uria til David.

And when Uriah was come unto him, David demanded of him how Joab did, and how the people did, and how the war prospered.

Da Uria kom til ham, spurte David ham om det stod vel til med Joab og med krigsfolkene, og hvorledes det gikk med krigen.

And David said to Uriah, Go down to thy house, and wash thy feet. And Uriah departed out of the king's house, and there followed him a mess of meat from the king.

Så sa David til Uria: Gå ned til ditt hus og tvett dine føtter! Og da Uria gikk ut av kongens hus, blev det sendt en rett mat efter ham fra kongens bord.

But Uriah slept at the door of the king's house with all the servants of his lord, and went not down to his house.

Men Uria la sig ved inngangen til kongens hus sammen med alle sin herres tjenere og gikk ikke ned til sitt hus.

And when they had told David, saying, Uriah went not down unto his house, David said unto Uriah, Camest thou not from thy journey? why then didst thou not go down unto thine house?

Da det blev meldt David at Uria ikke var gått ned til sitt hus, sa David til ham: Kommer du ikke fra reisen? Hvorfor er du da ikke gått ned til ditt hus?

And Uriah said unto David, The ark, and Israel, and Judah, abide in tents; and my lord Joab, and the servants of my lord, are encamped in the open fields; shall I then go into mine house, to eat and to drink, and to lie with my wife? as thou livest, and as thy soul liveth, I will not do this thing.

Da svarte Uria: Arken og Israel og Juda bor i løvhytter, og min herre Joab og min herres tjenere ligger i leir på åpen mark, og jeg skulde gå inn i mitt hus og ete og drikke og ligge hos min hustru! Så sant du lever, så sant din sjel lever: Det gjør jeg ikke!

And David said to Uriah, Tarry here to day also, and to morrow I will let thee depart. So Uriah abode in Jerusalem that day, and the morrow.

Da sa David til Uria: Bli her også idag, så vil jeg imorgen la dig fare. Og Uria blev i Jerusalem den dag og dagen efter.

And when David had called him, he did eat and drink before him; and he made him drunk: and at even he went out to lie on his bed with the servants of his lord, but went not down to his house.

Og David bad ham til sig, og han åt og drakk hos ham, og han drakk ham drukken; og om aftenen gikk han ut og la sig på sitt leie sammen med sin herres tjenere; men til sitt hus gikk han ikke ned.

And it came to pass in the morning, that David wrote a letter to Joab, and sent it by the hand of Uriah.

Morgenen efter skrev David et brev til Joab og sendte det med Uria.

And he wrote in the letter, saying, Set ye Uriah in the forefront of the hottest battle, and retire ye from him, that he may be smitten, and die.

Og i brevet skrev han således: Sett Uria lengst frem, der hvor striden er hårdest, og dra eder tilbake fra ham, så han blir slått og dør!

And it came to pass, when Joab observed the city, that he assigned Uriah unto a place where he knew that valiant men were.

Mens nu Joab lå og voktet på byen, satte han Uria på et sted hvor han visste at der var djerve menn.

And the men of the city went out, and fought with Joab: and there fell some of the people of the servants of David; and Uriah the Hittite died also.

Og da mennene i byen drog ut og stred mot Joab, falt nogen av krigsfolket - av Davids menn - og hetitten Uria døde også.

Then Joab sent and told David all the things concerning the war;

Da sendte Joab bud til David med tidende om alt som hadde hendt i krigen.

And charged the messenger, saying, When thou hast made an end of telling the matters of the war unto the king,

Og han bød sendebudet: Når du har talt ut til kongen om alt det som har hendt i krigen,

And if so be that the king's wrath arise, and he say unto thee, Wherefore approached ye so nigh unto the city when ye did fight? knew ye not that they would shoot from the wall?

og det skulde hende at kongens vrede optendes, og han sier til dig: Hvorfor gikk I så nær inn til byen under striden? Visste I ikke at de vilde skyte ned fra muren?

Who smote Abimelech the son of Jerubbesheth? did not a woman cast a piece of a millstone upon him from the wall, that he died in Thebez? why went ye nigh the wall? then say thou, Thy servant Uriah the Hittite is dead also.

Hvem var det som drepte Abimelek, Jerubbesets sønn? Var det ikke en kvinne som kastet en kvernsten ned på ham fra muren i Tebes, så han døde? Hvorfor gikk I så nær inn til muren? - så skal du si: Også din tjener hetitten Uria er død.

So the messenger went, and came and shewed David all that Joab had sent him for.

Så tok sendebudet avsted og kom og meldte David alt det Joab hadde pålagt ham.

And the messenger said unto David, Surely the men prevailed against us, and came out unto us into the field, and we were upon them even unto the entering of the gate.

Og budet sa til David: Mennene fikk overtaket over oss og drog ut på marken mot oss; men så trengte vi dem tilbake like til byporten.

And the shooters shot from off the wall upon thy servants; and some of the king's servants be dead, and thy servant Uriah the Hittite is dead also.

Da skjøt bueskytterne fra muren ned på dine tjenere, og det falt nogen av kongens tjenere; også din tjener hetitten Uria døde.

Then David said unto the messenger, Thus shalt thou say unto Joab, Let not this thing displease thee, for the sword devoureth one as well as another: make thy battle more strong against the city, and overthrow it: and encourage thou him.

Da sa David til budet: Så skal du si til Joab: Ta dig ikke nær av dette! For sverdet fortærer snart en, snart en annen; hold kraftig ved med å stride mot byen og riv den ned! Og sett du mot i ham!

And when the wife of Uriah heard that Uriah her husband was dead, she mourned for her husband.

Da Urias hustru hørte at Uria, hennes mann var død, sørget hun over sin ektefelle.

And when the mourning was past, David sent and fetched her to his house, and she became his wife, and bare him a son. But the thing that David had done displeased the LORD.

Men da sørgetiden var til ende, sendte David bud og hentet henne til sitt hus, og hun blev hans hustru og fødte ham en sønn. Men det som David hadde gjort, var ondt i Herrens øine.
