Proverbs 26

As snow in summer, and as rain in harvest, so honour is not seemly for a fool.

Come la neve non conviene all’estate, né la pioggia al tempo della mèsse, così non conviene la gloria allo stolto.

As the bird by wandering, as the swallow by flying, so the curse causeless shall not come.

Come il passero vaga qua e là e la rondine vola, così la maledizione senza motivo, non raggiunge l’effetto.

A whip for the horse, a bridle for the ass, and a rod for the fool's back.

La frusta per il cavallo, la briglia per l’asino, e il bastone per il dosso degli stolti.

Answer not a fool according to his folly, lest thou also be like unto him.

Non rispondere allo stolto secondo la sua follia, che tu non gli abbia a somigliare.

Answer a fool according to his folly, lest he be wise in his own conceit.

Rispondi allo stolto secondo la sua follia, perché non abbia a credersi savio.

He that sendeth a message by the hand of a fool cutteth off the feet, and drinketh damage.

Chi affida messaggi a uno stolto si taglia i piedi e s’abbevera di pene.

The legs of the lame are not equal: so is a parable in the mouth of fools.

Come le gambe dello zoppo son senza forza, così è una massima in bocca degli stolti.

As he that bindeth a stone in a sling, so is he that giveth honour to a fool.

Chi onora uno stolto fa come chi getta una gemma in un mucchio di sassi.

As a thorn goeth up into the hand of a drunkard, so is a parable in the mouth of fools.

Una massima in bocca agli stolti è come un ramo spinoso in mano a un ubriaco.

The great God that formed all things both rewardeth the fool, and rewardeth transgressors.

Chi impiega lo stolto e il primo che capita, è come un arciere che ferisce tutti.

As a dog returneth to his vomit, so a fool returneth to his folly.

Lo stolto che ricade nella sua follia, è come il cane che torna al suo vomito.

Seest thou a man wise in his own conceit? there is more hope of a fool than of him.

Hai tu visto un uomo che si crede savio? C’è più da sperare da uno stolto che da lui.

The slothful man saith, There is a lion in the way; a lion is in the streets.

Il pigro dice: "C’è un leone nella strada, c’è un leone per le vie!"

As the door turneth upon his hinges, so doth the slothful upon his bed.

Come la porta si volge sui cardini così il pigro sul suo letto.

The slothful hideth his hand in his bosom; it grieveth him to bring it again to his mouth.

Il pigro tuffa la mano nel piatto; gli par fatica riportarla alla bocca.

The sluggard is wiser in his own conceit than seven men that can render a reason.

Il pigro si crede più savio di sette uomini che dànno risposte sensate.

He that passeth by, and meddleth with strife belonging not to him, is like one that taketh a dog by the ears.

Il passante che si riscalda per una contesa che non lo concerne, è come chi afferra un cane per le orecchie.

As a mad man who casteth firebrands, arrows, and death,

Come un pazzo che avventa tizzoni, frecce e morte,

So is the man that deceiveth his neighbour, and saith, Am not I in sport?

così è colui che inganna il prossimo, e dice: "Ho fatto per ridere!"

Where no wood is, there the fire goeth out: so where there is no talebearer, the strife ceaseth.

Quando mancan le legna, il fuoco si spegne; e quando non c’è maldicente, cessan le contese.

As coals are to burning coals, and wood to fire; so is a contentious man to kindle strife.

Come il carbone da la brace, e le legna dànno la fiamma, così l’uomo rissoso accende le liti.

The words of a talebearer are as wounds, and they go down into the innermost parts of the belly.

Le parole del maldicente son come ghiottonerie, e penetrano fino nell’intimo delle viscere.

Burning lips and a wicked heart are like a potsherd covered with silver dross.

Labbra ardenti e un cuor malvagio son come schiuma d’argento spalmata sopra un vaso di terra.

He that hateth dissembleth with his lips, and layeth up deceit within him;

Chi odia, parla con dissimulazione; ma, dentro, cova la frode.

When he speaketh fair, believe him not: for there are seven abominations in his heart.

Quando parla con voce graziosa, non te ne fidare, perché ha sette abominazioni in cuore.

Whose hatred is covered by deceit, his wickedness shall be shewed before the whole congregation.

L’odio suo si nasconde sotto la finzione, ma la sua malvagità si rivelerà nell’assemblea.

Whoso diggeth a pit shall fall therein: and he that rolleth a stone, it will return upon him.

Chi scava una fossa vi cadrà, e la pietra torna addosso a chi la rotola.

A lying tongue hateth those that are afflicted by it; and a flattering mouth worketh ruin.

La lingua bugiarda odia quelli che ha ferito, e la bocca lusinghiera produce rovina.
