Nehemiah 2

And it came to pass in the month Nisan, in the twentieth year of Artaxerxes the king, that wine was before him: and I took up the wine, and gave it unto the king. Now I had not been beforetime sad in his presence.

L’anno ventesimo del re Artaserse, nel mese di Nisan, come il vino stava dinanzi al re, io presi il vino e glielo porsi. Or io non ero mai stato triste in sua presenza.

Wherefore the king said unto me, Why is thy countenance sad, seeing thou art not sick? this is nothing else but sorrow of heart. Then I was very sore afraid,

E il re mi disse: "Perché hai l’aspetto triste? eppure non sei malato; non può esser altro che un’afflizione del cuore". Allora io ebbi grandissima paura,

And said unto the king, Let the king live for ever: why should not my countenance be sad, when the city, the place of my fathers' sepulchres, lieth waste, and the gates thereof are consumed with fire?

e dissi al re: "Viva il re in eterno! Come potrebbe il mio aspetto non esser triste quando la città dove sono i sepolcri de’ miei padri è distrutta e le sue porte son consumate dal fuoco?"

Then the king said unto me, For what dost thou make request? So I prayed to the God of heaven.

E il re mi disse: "Che cosa domandi?" Allora io pregai l’Iddio del cielo;

And I said unto the king, If it please the king, and if thy servant have found favour in thy sight, that thou wouldest send me unto Judah, unto the city of my fathers' sepulchres, that I may build it.

poi risposi al re: "Se così piace al re e il tuo servo ha incontrato favore agli occhi tuoi, mandami in Giudea, nella città dove sono i sepolcri de’ miei padri, perché io la riedifichi".

And the king said unto me, (the queen also sitting by him,) For how long shall thy journey be? and when wilt thou return? So it pleased the king to send me; and I set him a time.

E il re, che avea la regina seduta allato, mi disse: "Quanto durerà il tuo viaggio? e quando ritornerai?" La cosa piacque al re, ei mi lasciò andare, e io gli fissai un termine di tempo.

Moreover I said unto the king, If it please the king, let letters be given me to the governors beyond the river, that they may convey me over till I come into Judah;

Poi dissi al re: "Se così piace al re, mi si diano delle lettere per i governatori d’oltre il fiume affinché mi lascino passare ed entrare in Giuda,

And a letter unto Asaph the keeper of the king's forest, that he may give me timber to make beams for the gates of the palace which appertained to the house, and for the wall of the city, and for the house that I shall enter into. And the king granted me, according to the good hand of my God upon me.

e una lettera per Asaf, guardiano del parco del re, affinché mi dia del legname per costruire le porte del castello annesso alla casa dell’Eterno, per le mura della città, e per la casa che abiterò io". E il re mi diede le lettere, perché la benefica mano del mio Dio era su me.

Then I came to the governors beyond the river, and gave them the king's letters. Now the king had sent captains of the army and horsemen with me.

Io giunsi presso i governatori d’oltre il fiume, e diedi loro le lettere del re. Il re avea mandati meco dei capi dell’esercito e dei cavalieri.

When Sanballat the Horonite, and Tobiah the servant, the Ammonite, heard of it, it grieved them exceedingly that there was come a man to seek the welfare of the children of Israel.

E quando Samballat, lo Horonita, e Tobia, il servo Ammonita, furono informati del mio arrivo, ebbero gran dispiacere della venuta d’un uomo che procurava il bene de’ figliuoli d’Israele.

So I came to Jerusalem, and was there three days.

Così giunsi a Gerusalemme; e quando v’ebbi passato tre giorni,

And I arose in the night, I and some few men with me; neither told I any man what my God had put in my heart to do at Jerusalem: neither was there any beast with me, save the beast that I rode upon.

mi levai di notte, presi meco pochi uomini, e non dissi nulla ad alcuno di quello che Dio m’avea messo in cuore di fare per Gerusalemme; non avevo meco altro giumento che quello ch’io cavalcavo.

And I went out by night by the gate of the valley, even before the dragon well, and to the dung port, and viewed the walls of Jerusalem, which were broken down, and the gates thereof were consumed with fire.

Ed uscii di notte per la porta della Valle, e mi diressi verso la sorgente del Dragone e la porta del Letame, considerando le mura di Gerusalemme, com’erano rotte e come le sue porte erano consumate dal fuoco.

Then I went on to the gate of the fountain, and to the king's pool: but there was no place for the beast that was under me to pass.

Passai presso la porta della Sorgente e il serbatoio del Re, ma non v’era posto per cui il giumento ch’io cavalcavo potesse passare.

Then went I up in the night by the brook, and viewed the wall, and turned back, and entered by the gate of the valley, and so returned.

Allora risalii di notte la valle, sempre considerando le mura; poi, rientrato per la porta della Valle, me ne tornai a casa.

And the rulers knew not whither I went, or what I did; neither had I as yet told it to the Jews, nor to the priests, nor to the nobles, nor to the rulers, nor to the rest that did the work.

I magistrati non sapevano né dov’io fossi andato né che cosa facessi. Fino a quel momento, io non avevo detto nulla né ai Giudei né ai sacerdoti né ai notabili né ai magistrati né ad alcuno di quelli che si occupavano di lavori.

Then said I unto them, Ye see the distress that we are in, how Jerusalem lieth waste, and the gates thereof are burned with fire: come, and let us build up the wall of Jerusalem, that we be no more a reproach.

Allora io dissi loro: "Voi vedete la misera condizione nella quale ci troviamo; Gerusalemme è distrutta, e le sue porte son consumate dal fuoco! Venite, riedifichiamo le mura di Gerusalemme, e non sarem più nell’obbrobrio!"

Then I told them of the hand of my God which was good upon me; as also the king's words that he had spoken unto me. And they said, Let us rise up and build. So they strengthened their hands for this good work.

E narrai loro come la benefica mano del mio Dio era stata su me, senza omettere le parole che il re m’avea dette. E quelli dissero: "Leviamoci, e mettiamoci a costruire!" E si fecero animo per metter mano alla buona impresa.

But when Sanballat the Horonite, and Tobiah the servant, the Ammonite, and Geshem the Arabian, heard it, they laughed us to scorn, and despised us, and said, What is this thing that ye do? will ye rebel against the king?

Ma quando Samballat, lo Horonita, e Tobia, il servo Ammonita, e Ghescem, l’Arabo, seppero la cosa, si fecero beffe di noi, e ci sprezzarono dicendo: "Che cosa state facendo? Vi volete forse ribellare contro al re?"

Then answered I them, and said unto them, The God of heaven, he will prosper us; therefore we his servants will arise and build: but ye have no portion, nor right, nor memorial, in Jerusalem.

Allora io risposi e dissi loro: "L’Iddio del cielo è quegli che ci darà buon successo. Noi, suoi servi, ci leveremo e costruiremo; ma voi non avete né parte né diritto né ricordanza in Gerusalemme".
