Proverbs 25

These are also proverbs of Solomon, which the men of Hezekiah king of Judah copied out.
सुलैमान की ये कुछ अन्य सूक्तियाँ हैं जिनका प्रतिलेख यहूदा के राजा हिजकिय्याह के लोगों ने तैयार किया था:
It is the glory of God to conceal a thing: but the honour of kings is to search out a matter.
किसी विषय—वस्तु को रहस्यपूर्ण रखने में परमेश्वर की गरिमा है किन्तु किसी बात को ढूँढ निकालने में राजा की महिमा है।
The heaven for height, and the earth for depth, and the heart of kings is unsearchable.
जैसे ऊपर अन्तहीन आकाश है और नीचे अटल धरती है, वैसे ही राजाओं के मन होते हैं जिनके ओर—छोर का कोई अता पता नहीं। उसकी थाह लेना कठिन है।
Take away the dross from the silver, and there shall come forth a vessel for the finer.
जैसे चाँदी से खोट का दूर करना, सुनार को उपयोगी होता है,
Take away the wicked from before the king, and his throne shall be established in righteousness.
वैसे ही राजा के सामने से दुष्ट को दूर करना नेकी उसके सिंहासन को अटल करता है।
Put not forth thyself in the presence of the king, and stand not in the place of great men:
राजा के सामने अपने बड़ाई मत बखानो और महापुरुषों के बीच स्थान मत चाहो।
For better it is that it be said unto thee, Come up hither; than that thou shouldest be put lower in the presence of the prince whom thine eyes have seen.
उत्तम वह है जो तुझसे कहे, “आ यहाँ, आ जा” अपेक्षा इसके कि कुलीन जन के समक्ष वह तेरा निरादर करें।
Go not forth hastily to strive, lest thou know not what to do in the end thereof, when thy neighbour hath put thee to shame.
तू किसी को जल्दी में कचहरी मत घसीट। क्योंकि अंत में वह लज्जित करें तो तू क्या कहेगा
Debate thy cause with thy neighbour himself; and discover not a secret to another:
यदि तू अपने पड़ोसी के संग में किसी बात पर विवाद करे, तो किसी जन का विश्वास जो तुझमें निहित है, उसको तू मत तोड़।
Lest he that heareth it put thee to shame, and thine infamy turn not away.
ऐसा न हो जाये कहीं तेरी जो सुनता हो, लज्जित तुझे ही करे। और तू ऐसे अपयश का भागी बने जिसका अंत न हो।
A word fitly spoken is like apples of gold in pictures of silver.
अवसर पर बोला वचन होता है ऐसा जैसा हों चाँदी में स्वर्णिम सेब जड़े हुए।
As an earring of gold, and an ornament of fine gold, so is a wise reprover upon an obedient ear.
जो कान बुद्धिमान की झिड़की सुनता है, वह उसके कान के लिये सोने की बाली या कुन्दन की आभूषण बन जाता है।
As the cold of snow in the time of harvest, so is a faithful messenger to them that send him: for he refresheth the soul of his masters.
एक विश्वास योग्य दूत, जो उसे भेजते हैं उनके लिये कटनी के समय की शीतल बयार सा होता है हृदय में निज स्वामियों के वह स्फूर्ती भर देता है।
Whoso boasteth himself of a false gift is like clouds and wind without rain.
वह मनुष्य वर्षा रहित पवन और रीतें मेघों सा होता है, जो बड़ी—बड़ी कोरी बातें देने की बनाता है; किन्तु नहीं देता है।
By long forbearing is a prince persuaded, and a soft tongue breaketh the bone.
धैर्यपूर्ण बातों से राजा तक मनाये जाते और नम्र वाणी हड्डी तक तोड़ सकती हैं।
Hast thou found honey? eat so much as is sufficient for thee, lest thou be filled therewith, and vomit it.
यद्यपि शहद बहुत उत्तम है, पर तू बहुत अधिक मत खा और यदि तू अधिक खायेगा, तो उल्टी आ जायेगी और रोगी हो जायेगा।
Withdraw thy foot from thy neighbour's house; lest he be weary of thee, and so hate thee.
वैसे ही तू पड़ोसी के घर में बार—बार पैर मत रख। अधिक आना जाना निरादर करता है।
A man that beareth false witness against his neighbour is a maul, and a sword, and a sharp arrow.
वह मनुष्य, जो झूठी साक्षी अपने साथी के विरोध में देता है वह तो है हथौड़ा सा अथवा तलवार सा या तीखे बाणा सा।
Confidence in an unfaithful man in time of trouble is like a broken tooth, and a foot out of joint.
विपत्ति के काल में भरोसा विश्वास—घाती पर होता है ऐसा जैसे दुःख देता दाँत अथवा लँगड़ाते पैर।
As he that taketh away a garment in cold weather, and as vinegar upon nitre, so is he that singeth songs to an heavy heart.
जो कोई उसके सामने खुशी के गीत गाता है जिसका मन भारी है। वह उसको वैसा लगता है जैसे जोड़े में कोई कपड़े उतार लेता अथवा कोई फोड़े के सफफ पर सिरका उंडेला हो।
If thine enemy be hungry, give him bread to eat; and if he be thirsty, give him water to drink:
यदि तेरा शत्रु भी कभी भूखा हो, उसके खाने के लिये, तू भोजन दे दे, और यदि वह प्यासा हो, तू उसके लिये पानी पीने को दे दे।
For thou shalt heap coals of fire upon his head, and the LORD shall reward thee.
यदि तू ऐसा करेगा वह लज्जित होगा, वह लज्जा उसके चिंतन में अंगारों सी धधकेगी, और यहोवा तुझे उसका प्रतिफल देगा।
The north wind driveth away rain: so doth an angry countenance a backbiting tongue.
उत्तर का पवन जैसे वर्षा लाता है वैसे ही धूर्त—वाणी क्रोध उपजाती है।
It is better to dwell in the corner of the housetop, than with a brawling woman and in a wide house.
झगड़ालू पत्नी के साथ घर में रहने से छत के किसी कोने पर रहना उत्तम है।
As cold waters to a thirsty soul, so is good news from a far country.
किसी दूर देश से आई कोई अच्छी खबर ऐसी लगती है जैसे थके मादे प्यासे को शीतल जल।
A righteous man falling down before the wicked is as a troubled fountain, and a corrupt spring.
गाद भरे झरने अथवा किसी दूषित कुँए सा होता वह धर्मी पुरूष जो किसी दुष्ट के आगे झुक जाता है।
It is not good to eat much honey: so for men to search their own glory is not glory.
जैसे बहुत अधिक शहद खाना अच्छा नहीं वैसे अपना मान बढ़ाने का यत्न करना अच्छा नहीं है।
He that hath no rule over his own spirit is like a city that is broken down, and without walls.
ऐसा जन जिसको स्वयं पर नियन्त्रण नहीं, वह उस नगर जैसा है, जिसका परकोटा ढह कर बिखर गया हो।
