Numbers 23

And Balaam said unto Balak, Build me here seven altars, and prepare me here seven oxen and seven rams.

بلعام به بالاق گفت: «در اینجا هفت قربانگاه بساز و برای من هفت گاو و هفت قوچ آماده کن.»

And Balak did as Balaam had spoken; and Balak and Balaam offered on every altar a bullock and a ram.

بالاق طبق دستور او رفتار کرد و آنها بر هر قربانگاه یک گاو و یک قوچ را قربانی کردند.

And Balaam said unto Balak, Stand by thy burnt offering, and I will go: peradventure the LORD will come to meet me: and whatsoever he sheweth me I will tell thee. And he went to an high place.

بعد بلعام به بالاق گفت: «در کنار قربانی سوختنی خود بایست و من می‌روم تا ببینم که آیا خداوند به ملاقات من می‌آید، یا نه. هرچه که او به من بفرماید، تو را از آن آگاه می‌سازم.» پس بلعام تنها بالای تپّه‌ای رفت

And God met Balaam: and he said unto him, I have prepared seven altars, and I have offered upon every altar a bullock and a ram.

و در آنجا خدا او را ملاقات کرد. بلعام به او گفت: «من هفت قربانگاه درست کردم و بر هر کدام آنها یک گاو و یک قوچ قربانی کردم.»

And the LORD put a word in Balaam's mouth, and said, Return unto Balak, and thus thou shalt speak.

خداوند به بلعام فرمود که چه بگوید و او را دوباره نزد بالاق فرستاد تا پیام او را برساند.

And he returned unto him, and, lo, he stood by his burnt sacrifice, he, and all the princes of Moab.

پس بلعام نزد بالاق که با تمام رهبران موآب در کنار قربانی سوختنی خود ایستاده بودند، بازگشت

And he took up his parable, and said, Balak the king of Moab hath brought me from Aram, out of the mountains of the east, saying, Come, curse me Jacob, and come, defy Israel.

و چنین گفت: «بالاق مرا از سوریه، از کوههای مشرق آورد. به من گفت: 'بیا و یعقوب را به‌خاطر من نفرین کن. بیا و به قوم اسرائیل لعنت بفرست.'

How shall I curse, whom God hath not cursed? or how shall I defy, whom the LORD hath not defied?

چگونه می‌توانم قومی را نفرین کنم که خدا نفرین نکرده است؟ چگونه می‌توانم مردمی را لعنت کنم که خدا لعنت نکرده است؟

For from the top of the rocks I see him, and from the hills I behold him: lo, the people shall dwell alone, and shall not be reckoned among the nations.

از فراز کوهها آنها را می‌بینم، از بالای تپّه‌ها آنها را تماشا می‌کنم. آنها مردمی هستند که تنها زندگی می‌کنند، خود را جزو اقوام دیگر بشمار نمی‌آورند.

Who can count the dust of Jacob, and the number of the fourth part of Israel? Let me die the death of the righteous, and let my last end be like his!

آنها مانند غبار، بی‌شمارند و بی‌حساب. ای کاش، این سعادت را می‌داشتم، که مثل یکی از افراد قوم خدا بمیرم. ای‌کاش، عاقبت من، مانند عاقبت آنها باشد.»

And Balak said unto Balaam, What hast thou done unto me? I took thee to curse mine enemies, and, behold, thou hast blessed them altogether.

بالاق از بلعام پرسید: «این چه کاری بود که تو به من کردی؟ من به تو گفتم دشمنانم را نفرین کنی، ولی تو آنها را برکت دادی.»

And he answered and said, Must I not take heed to speak that which the LORD hath put in my mouth?

بلعام پاسخ داد: «آیا نباید آنچه را که خداوند بر زبانم می‌گذارد بیان کنم.»

And Balak said unto him, Come, I pray thee, with me unto another place, from whence thou mayest see them: thou shalt see but the utmost part of them, and shalt not see them all: and curse me them from thence.

بالاق به او گفت: «بیا تا تو را به مکان دیگری ببرم. از آنجا تنها یک قسمت قوم اسرائیل را می‌بینی. از همان‌جا آنها را برای من نفرین کن.»

And he brought him into the field of Zophim, to the top of Pisgah, and built seven altars, and offered a bullock and a ram on every altar.

پس بالاق او را به مزرعه صوفیم که بر کوه فسجه واقع است برد. در آنجا هفت قربانگاه ساخت و بر هر کدام آنها یک گاو و یک قوچ قربانی کرد.

And he said unto Balak, Stand here by thy burnt offering, while I meet the LORD yonder.

بلعام به پادشاه گفت: «تو در همین جا کنار قربانی سوختنی بایست. من در آنجا برای ملاقات خداوند می‌روم.»

And the LORD met Balaam, and put a word in his mouth, and said, Go again unto Balak, and say thus.

خداوند به ملاقات بلعام آمد و به او فرمود که پیام او را به بالاق برساند.

And when he came to him, behold, he stood by his burnt offering, and the princes of Moab with him. And Balak said unto him, What hath the LORD spoken?

بلعام نزد بالاق که با رهبران موآب کنار قربانی سوختنی ایستاده بودند، برگشت. بالاق از او پرسید: «خداوند چه فرمود؟»

And he took up his parable, and said, Rise up, Balak, and hear; hearken unto me, thou son of Zippor:

بلعام این چنین بیان کرد: «ای بالاق، برخیز و بشنو! ای پسر صفور به من گوش فرا ده!

God is not a man, that he should lie; neither the son of man, that he should repent: hath he said, and shall he not do it? or hath he spoken, and shall he not make it good?

خداوند چون انسان نیست که دروغ بگوید، یا چون او توبه کند. به آنچه که قول بدهد عمل می‌کند، او سخن می‌گوید و به انجام می‌رسد.

Behold, I have received commandment to bless: and he hath blessed; and I cannot reverse it.

به من امر فرموده است که آنها را برکت بدهم. او به آنها برکت داده است؛ من آن را نمی‌توانم تغییر دهم.

He hath not beheld iniquity in Jacob, neither hath he seen perverseness in Israel: the LORD his God is with him, and the shout of a king is among them.

او در آیندهٔ اسرائیل بدبختی و دشواری نمی‌بیند خداوند خدای ایشان با آنهاست. آنها او را به عنوان پادشاه خویش اعلام می‌کنند.

God brought them out of Egypt; he hath as it were the strength of an unicorn.

خدا آنها را از مصر بیرون آورد. آنها چون گاو وحشی نیرومند هستند.

Surely there is no enchantment against Jacob, neither is there any divination against Israel: according to this time it shall be said of Jacob and of Israel, What hath God wrought!

کسی نمی‌تواند اسرائیل را جادو کند و افسون کسی بر آنها کارگر نیست. دربارهٔ اسرائیل می‌گویند: 'خدا چه کارهایی برای آنها کرده است.'

Behold, the people shall rise up as a great lion, and lift up himself as a young lion: he shall not lie down until he eat of the prey, and drink the blood of the slain.

این قوم را ببینید که مثل شیر مادّه برمی‌خیزند و مانند شیر نر به پا می‌ایستند. تا وقتی‌که شکار خود را نخورند و خون کشته‌شدگان خود را ننوشند، نمی‌خوابند.»

And Balak said unto Balaam, Neither curse them at all, nor bless them at all.

بالاق به بلعام گفت: «نه آنها را نفرین کن و نه به آنها برکت بده.»

But Balaam answered and said unto Balak, Told not I thee, saying, All that the LORD speaketh, that I must do?

بلعام پاسخ داد: «مگر من به تو نگفتم، هرآنچه را که خداوند بگوید، انجام خواهم داد.»

And Balak said unto Balaam, Come, I pray thee, I will bring thee unto another place; peradventure it will please God that thou mayest curse me them from thence.

آنگاه بالاق به او گفت: «حالا بیا تا به جای دیگری برویم، شاید مورد پسند خدا باشد و به تو اجازه بدهد که قوم اسرائیل را از آنجا برای من نفرین کنی.»

And Balak brought Balaam unto the top of Peor, that looketh toward Jeshimon.

بالاق او را بر قلّهٔ فغور که مشرف به بیابان بود، برد.

And Balaam said unto Balak, Build me here seven altars, and prepare me here seven bullocks and seven rams.

بلعام به او گفت که هفت قربانگاه بسازد و هفت گاو و هفت قوچ را برای قربانی آماده کند.

And Balak did as Balaam had said, and offered a bullock and a ram on every altar.

بالاق مطابق دستور او عمل کرد و بر هر قربانگاه یک گاو و یک قوچ قربانی کرد.
