Judges 8

مردم افرایم به جدعون گفتند: «این چه کاری بود که با ما کردی؟ چرا وقتی به جنگ مدیانیان رفتی ما را خبر نکردی؟» پس او را با خشم بسیار سرزنش نمودند.

And the men of Ephraim said unto him, Why hast thou served us thus, that thou calledst us not, when thou wentest to fight with the Midianites? And they did chide with him sharply.

جدعون به آنها گفت: «آیا خوشه‌چینی افرایم از میوه‌چینی ابیعزر بهتر نیست؟ کار شما در پایان جنگ بمراتب، مهمتر از کار ما در شروع جنگ بود.

And he said unto them, What have I done now in comparison of you? Is not the gleaning of the grapes of Ephraim better than the vintage of Abi–ezer?

زیرا خداوند به شما کمک کرد که دو سردار مدیانیان، یعنی غُراب و ذَئب را دستگیر کنید.» با این سخن جدعون، آنها آرام شدند.

God hath delivered into your hands the princes of Midian, Oreb and Zeeb: and what was I able to do in comparison of you? Then their anger was abated toward him, when he had said that.

بعد جدعون، با سیصد نفر از همراهان خود از رود اردن عبور کرد. آنها با وجود اینکه بسیار خسته بودند، باز هم از تعقیب دشمن دست نکشیدند.

And Gideon came to Jordan, and passed over, he, and the three hundred men that were with him, faint, yet pursuing them.

جدعون به مردم سُكوّت گفت: «لطفاً به همراهان من چیزی برای خوردن بدهید، زیرا آنها خسته و بی‌حال شده‌اند و ما هنوز در تعقیب زَبَح و صَلمُونَع، پادشاهان مدیان هستیم.»

And he said unto the men of Succoth, Give, I pray you, loaves of bread unto the people that follow me; for they be faint, and I am pursuing after Zebah and Zalmunna, kings of Midian.

رهبران سُكوّت گفتند: «آیا زبح و صلمونع را دستگیر کرده‌ای که ما به سپاه تو نان بدهیم؟»

And the princes of Succoth said, Are the hands of Zebah and Zalmunna now in thine hand, that we should give bread unto thine army?

جدعون گفت: «بسیار خوب! وقتی‌که خداوند زبح و صلمونع را به دست من تسلیم کند، آنگاه من گوشت بدن شما را با تیغ و خار بیابان می‌دَرَم.»

And Gideon said, Therefore when the LORD hath delivered Zebah and Zalmunna into mine hand, then I will tear your flesh with the thorns of the wilderness and with briers.

جدعون از آنجا به فَنوعیل رفت و از آنها هم، درخواست خوراک کرد. آنها هم، مانند مردم سُكوّت به او جواب دادند.

And he went up thence to Penuel, and spake unto them likewise: and the men of Penuel answered him as the men of Succoth had answered him.

جدعون به مردم فنوعیل گفت: «وقتی به سلامتی بازگردم این بُرج را ویران می‌کنم.»

And he spake also unto the men of Penuel, saying, When I come again in peace, I will break down this tower.

در این وقت زَبَح و صَلمونع با پانزده هزار سرباز در قَرقور بودند. از تمام قوای شرقی فقط همین تعداد باقیمانده بود، زیرا یکصد و بیست هزار نفرشان قبلاً تلف شده بودند.

Now Zebah and Zalmunna were in Karkor, and their hosts with them, about fifteen thousand men, all that were left of all the hosts of the children of the east: for there fell an hundred and twenty thousand men that drew sword.

بعد جدعون از راه کاروان رو در شرق نوبح یُجبَها رفته، با یک حمله ناگهانی سپاه مدیانیان را شکست داد.

And Gideon went up by the way of them that dwelt in tents on the east of Nobah and Jogbehah, and smote the host: for the host was secure.

زبح و صلمونع فرار کردند. جدعون به تعقیب‌ آنها رفت و هر دو پادشاه مدیان را دستگیر کرد و تمام سپاه آنها را تارومار کرد.

And when Zebah and Zalmunna fled, he pursued after them, and took the two kings of Midian, Zebah and Zalmunna, and discomfited all the host.

بعد جدعون پسر یوآش از طریق گردنه حارَس از جنگ برگشت.

And Gideon the son of Joash returned from battle before the sun was up,

او یک جوان سُكوّتی را دستگیر کرد و پس از پرس و جو از او خواست تا نامهای مأموران و سرکردگان سُكوّت را بنویسد. آن جوان نام هفتاد و هفت نفرشان را نوشت.

And caught a young man of the men of Succoth, and enquired of him: and he described unto him the princes of Succoth, and the elders thereof, even threescore and seventeen men.

جدعون به سُكوّت رفت و به مردم آنجا گفت: «به یاد بیاورید که شما از کمک کردن به من خودداری‌ کردید و گفتید که من هرگز نمی‌توانم زبح و صلمونع را دستگیر کنم و از دادن خوراک به ما که خسته و بی‌حال بودیم، خودداری کردید. اینک ببینید آنها اینجا هستند.»

And he came unto the men of Succoth, and said, Behold Zebah and Zalmunna, with whom ye did upbraid me, saying, Are the hands of Zebah and Zalmunna now in thine hand, that we should give bread unto thy men that are weary?

بعد با خار بیابان، رهبران سُكوّت را مجازات کرد.

And he took the elders of the city, and thorns of the wilderness and briers, and with them he taught the men of Succoth.

بُرج فنوعیل را ویران نمود و مردان شهر را به قتل رساند.

And he beat down the tower of Penuel, and slew the men of the city.

بعد به زبح و صلمونع گفت: «آنهایی را که در تابور کشتید چگونه اشخاصی بودند؟» جواب دادند: «آنها همگی مانند شما و هر کدام مانند یک شاهزاده بودند.» جدعون گفت:

Then said he unto Zebah and Zalmunna, What manner of men were they whom ye slew at Tabor? And they answered, As thou art, so were they; each one resembled the children of a king.

«پس آنها برادران و پسران مادر من بودند. به خداوند قسم، اگر شما آنها را نمی‌کشتید، من هم شما را نمی‌کشتم.»

And he said, They were my brethren, even the sons of my mother: as the LORD liveth, if ye had saved them alive, I would not slay you.

پس به پسر اول خود، یَتَر گفت: «برخیز و آنها را بکُش.» امّا یتر دست به شمشیر نبرد و ترسید، چون هنوز بسیار جوان بود.

And he said unto Jether his firstborn, Up, and slay them. But the youth drew not his sword: for he feared, because he was yet a youth.

آنگاه زبح و صلمونع به جدعون گفتند: «تو خودت ما را بکش. ما می‌خواهیم که به دست یک شخص شجاعی، مثل تو کشته شویم.» پس جدعون برخاست، زبح و صلمونع را کشت و گردنبندهای شترهای ایشان را نیز برداشت.

Then Zebah and Zalmunna said, Rise thou, and fall upon us: for as the man is, so is his strength. And Gideon arose, and slew Zebah and Zalmunna, and took away the ornaments that were on their camels' necks.

مردم اسرائیل به جدعون گفتند: «تو بیا و حاکم ما باش، تو و پسرانت و نسلهای آیندهٔ تو، زیرا تو ما را از دست مدیانیان نجات دادی.»

Then the men of Israel said unto Gideon, Rule thou over us, both thou, and thy son, and thy son's son also: for thou hast delivered us from the hand of Midian.

جدعون جواب داد: «نه من و نه پسران من، پادشاه شما می‌شویم. حاکم شما خداوند است.

And Gideon said unto them, I will not rule over you, neither shall my son rule over you: the LORD shall rule over you.

امّا یک خواهش از شما می‌کنم که هر کدامتان گوشواره‌هایی را که به غنیمت گرفته‌اید به من بدهید.» (چون دشمنان آنها، که اسماعیلی بودند، همگی گوشوارهٔ طلا داشتند.)

And Gideon said unto them, I would desire a request of you, that ye would give me every man the earrings of his prey. (For they had golden earrings, because they were Ishmaelites.)

آنها جواب دادند: «با کمال میل، ما گوشواره‌ها را به تو می‌دهیم.» پس آنها ردایی را روی زمین پهن کردند و همگی گوشواره‌هایی را که به غنیمت گرفته بودند، در آن انداختند.

And they answered, We will willingly give them. And they spread a garment, and did cast therein every man the earrings of his prey.

وزن گوشواره‌ها به غیراز گردنبندهای شتران، و زنجیرها و لباسهای ارغوانی پادشاهان مدیان و حلقه‌های گردن شترهایشان، در حدود بیست کیلوگرم طلا بود.

And the weight of the golden earrings that he requested was a thousand and seven hundred shekels of gold; beside ornaments, and collars, and purple raiment that was on the kings of Midian, and beside the chains that were about their camels' necks.

جدعون از آنها یک مجسمهٔ طلایی ساخت و آن را در شهر خود، عُفره قرار داد. بزودی مردم اسرائیل شروع به پرستش آن کردند. این کار برای جدعون و خانواده‌اش دامی شد.

And Gideon made an ephod thereof, and put it in his city, even in Ophrah: and all Israel went thither a whoring after it: which thing became a snare unto Gideon, and to his house.

به این ترتیب مردم مدیان به دست اسرائیل شکست خوردند و دیگر نتوانستند قدرت خود را به دست بیاورند. در دوران عمر یروبعل، مدّت چهل سال صلح و آرامش در آن سرزمین برقرار بود.

Thus was Midian subdued before the children of Israel, so that they lifted up their heads no more. And the country was in quietness forty years in the days of Gideon.

جدعون، پسر یوآش به خانهٔ خود برگشت.

And Jerubbaal the son of Joash went and dwelt in his own house.

او دارای هفتاد پسر بود زیرا زنهای زیادی داشت.

And Gideon had threescore and ten sons of his body begotten: for he had many wives.

او همچنین یک صیغه در شَکیم داشت که برایش یک پسر به دنیا آورد و وی را ابیملک نامید.

And his concubine that was in Shechem, she also bare him a son, whose name he called Abimelech.

وقتی‌که جدعون فوت کرد، پیر و سالخورده شده بود. او را در آرامگاه پدرش یوآش، در عفره در سرزمین ابیعزریان به خاک سپردند.

And Gideon the son of Joash died in a good old age, and was buried in the sepulchre of Joash his father, in Ophrah of the Abi–ezrites.

بعد از وفات جدعون، مردم اسرائیل دوباره گمراه شده، به پرستش بعل پرداخته و بت بعل را خدای عهد خود نامیدند

And it came to pass, as soon as Gideon was dead, that the children of Israel turned again, and went a whoring after Baalim, and made Baal–berith their god.

و خداوند خدای خود را از یاد بردند. خدایی که آنها را از دست دشمنان اطرافشان نجات داده بود.

And the children of Israel remembered not the LORD their God, who had delivered them out of the hands of all their enemies on every side:

آنها خدمات یروبعل (جدعون) را که در حق ایشان کرده بود، فراموش نمودند و به خاندان او احترام نگذاشتند.

Neither shewed they kindness to the house of Jerubbaal, namely, Gideon, according to all the goodness which he had shewed unto Israel.
