I Kings 19

اخاب همهٔ کارهایی را که ایلیا کرده بود، برای همسرش ایزابل تعریف کرد که چگونه ایلیا همهٔ انبیای بت بعل را با شمشیر کشت.

And Ahab told Jezebel all that Elijah had done, and withal how he had slain all the prophets with the sword.

آنگاه ایزابل برای ایلیا پیام فرستاد: «مگر خدایان مرا بکشند، وگرنه تا فردا همین موقع، همان کاری را که با انبیای من کردی با تو خواهم کرد.»

Then Jezebel sent a messenger unto Elijah, saying, So let the gods do to me, and more also, if I make not thy life as the life of one of them by to morrow about this time.

ایلیا از ترس جانش گریخت و با خدمتکارش به شهر بئرشبع در یهودا رفت و خدمتکارش را در آنجا گذاشت.

And when he saw that, he arose, and went for his life, and came to Beer–sheba, which belongeth to Judah, and left his servant there.

امّا خودش یک روز در بیابان راه پیمود و زیر سایهٔ درختی نشست و آرزوی مرگ کرد و گفت: «خدایا، دیگر مرا بس است. جان مرا بگیر، زیرا من از نیاکانم بهتر نیستم.»

But he himself went a day's journey into the wilderness, and came and sat down under a juniper tree: and he requested for himself that he might die; and said, It is enough; now, O LORD, take away my life; for I am not better than my fathers.

سپس زیر درخت دراز کشید و به خواب رفت. ناگهان فرشته‌ای او را لمس کرد و گفت: «برخیز و بخور!»

And as he lay and slept under a juniper tree, behold, then an angel touched him, and said unto him, Arise and eat.

به اطراف نگاه کرد و یک قرص نان، كه روی سنگهای داغ پخته شده بود و یک کوزهٔ آب نزدیک سر خود دید. او خورد و نوشید و دوباره دراز کشید.

And he looked, and, behold, there was a cake baken on the coals, and a cruse of water at his head. And he did eat and drink, and laid him down again.

فرشتهٔ خداوند برای دومین بار آمد و او را لمس کرد و به او گفت: «برخیز و بخور، زیرا سفر برای تو دشوار خواهد بود.»

And the angel of the LORD came again the second time, and touched him, and said, Arise and eat; because the journey is too great for thee.

او برخاست و خورد و نوشید و چهل شبانه‌روز با نیروی آن خوراک تا به کوه سینا، کوه خدا رفت.

And he arose, and did eat and drink, and went in the strength of that meat forty days and forty nights unto Horeb the mount of God.

وارد غاری شد تا شب را در آنجا سپری کند. ناگهان خداوند به او گفت: «ایلیا، اینجا چه می‌کنی؟»

And he came thither unto a cave, and lodged there; and, behold, the word of the LORD came to him, and he said unto him, What doest thou here, Elijah?

او پاسخ داد: «ای خداوند خدای متعال، من همیشه تو را خدمت کرده‌ام، تنها تو را؛ امّا مردم اسرائیل پیمان خود را با تو شکسته‌اند، قربانگاههای تو را ویران کرده‌اند و انبیای تو را کشته‌اند. من تنها باقی مانده‌ام و اینک آنان قصد جان مرا دارند.»

And he said, I have been very jealous for the LORD God of hosts: for the children of Israel have forsaken thy covenant, thrown down thine altars, and slain thy prophets with the sword; and I, even I only, am left; and they seek my life, to take it away.

خداوند به او گفت: «بیرون برو و در بالای کوه نزد من بایست.» آنگاه خداوند از آنجا گذشت و باد شدیدی فرستاد که کوه را شکافت و صخره‌ها را فرو ریخت، امّا خداوند در باد نبود. باد از وزیدن ایستاد، آنگاه زلزله شد، امّا خداوند در زلزله نبود.

And he said, Go forth, and stand upon the mount before the LORD. And, behold, the LORD passed by, and a great and strong wind rent the mountains, and brake in pieces the rocks before the LORD; but the LORD was not in the wind: and after the wind an earthquake; but the LORD was not in the earthquake:

بعد از زلزله آتش بود، امّا خداوند در آتش نبود و بعد از آتش صدای ملایمی شنیده شد.

And after the earthquake a fire; but the LORD was not in the fire: and after the fire a still small voice.

هنگامی‌که ‌ایلیا صدا را شنید، صورت خود را با ردای خویش پوشاند و رفت و در دهانهٔ غار ایستاد. آنگاه صدایی به او گفت: «ایلیا، اینجا چه می‌کنی؟»

And it was so, when Elijah heard it, that he wrapped his face in his mantle, and went out, and stood in the entering in of the cave. And, behold, there came a voice unto him, and said, What doest thou here, Elijah?

او پاسخ داد: «ای خداوند خدای متعال، من همیشه تو را خدمت کرده‌ام، تنها تو را؛ امّا مردم اسرائیل پیمان خود را با تو شکسته‌اند، قربانگاههای تو را ویران کرده‌اند و انبیای تو را کشته‌اند. من تنها باقیمانده‌ام و اینک آنان قصد جان مرا دارند.»

And he said, I have been very jealous for the LORD God of hosts: because the children of Israel have forsaken thy covenant, thrown down thine altars, and slain thy prophets with the sword; and I, even I only, am left; and they seek my life, to take it away.

‌خداوند به او گفت: «به بیابان نزدیک دمشق بازگرد، سپس وارد شهر شو و حزائیل را به پادشاهی سوریه مسح کن.

And the LORD said unto him, Go, return on thy way to the wilderness of Damascus: and when thou comest, anoint Hazael to be king over Syria:

همچنین ییهو، پسر نِمشی را برای پادشاهی اسرائیل مسح کن و الیشع، پسر شافاط از اهالی آبل محوله را تدهین کن تا به جای تو نبی گردد.

And Jehu the son of Nimshi shalt thou anoint to be king over Israel: and Elisha the son of Shaphat of Abel–meholah shalt thou anoint to be prophet in thy room.

هرکس که از شمشیر حزائیل بگریزد ییهو او را خواهد کشت و آن کس که از شمشیر ییهو بگریزد، الیشع او را خواهد کشت.

And it shall come to pass, that him that escapeth the sword of Hazael shall Jehu slay: and him that escapeth from the sword of Jehu shall Elisha slay.

با این وجود هفت هزار نفر را كه هنوز به من وفادارند و در مقابل بت بعل تعظیم نكرده‌اند و آن را نبوسیده‌اند در اسرائیل زنده خواهم گذاشت.»

Yet I have left me seven thousand in Israel, all the knees which have not bowed unto Baal, and every mouth which hath not kissed him.

پس ایلیا از آنجا رفت و الیشع، پسر شافاط را یافت که شخم می‌زد. دوازده جفت گاو نر در جلوی او بودند و او با جفت دوازدهم بود. ایلیا از کنار او گذشت و ردای خود را روی دوش او انداخت.

So he departed thence, and found Elisha the son of Shaphat, who was plowing with twelve yoke of oxen before him, and he with the twelfth: and Elijah passed by him, and cast his mantle upon him.

الیشع گاوها را رها کرد و به دنبال او دوید و گفت: «اجازه بده تا پدر و مادرم را برای خداحافظی ببوسم، آنگاه به دنبال تو می‌آیم.» ایلیا به او گفت: «بازگرد، مانع تو نمی‌شوم»

And he left the oxen, and ran after Elijah, and said, Let me, I pray thee, kiss my father and my mother, and then I will follow thee. And he said unto him, Go back again: for what have I done to thee?

پس بازگشت و یک جفت گاو را سر برید و آنها را با چوب گاوآهن پخت و به مردم داد و آنها خوردند. آنگاه برخاست و به دنبال ایلیا رفت و به خدمت او پرداخت.

And he returned back from him, and took a yoke of oxen, and slew them, and boiled their flesh with the instruments of the oxen, and gave unto the people, and they did eat. Then he arose, and went after Elijah, and ministered unto him.
